While in Dunedin for business this week I decided to visit one of my favorite cheap lunch eats from my student days. Walking in with high expectations of a crispy chicken sushi or perhaps something more warming on a chilly Dunedin day, I quickly realised that things were not as they were. When the restaurant is called Savoury Japan, I don't expect to see Thai menu items taped to the side of the cash register. Questioning my memory of this place, I opted for the karage chicken curry.
While waiting for my meal, I noticed the woman behind the counter grab a knife and use it to cut open a box, and then seamlessly move to using the knife to slice up some salmon. Not good.
My curry arrived, and there was nothing karage or curry about it, aside from the overwhelming taste of curry powder. A crumbed chicken schnitz on some rice, with the 'curry' pooling around it. This is the first and hopefully last time I see potato and carrots in a japanese curry.
Not a great experience, and not great food. If you're hungry it will hit the spot, but don't expect Japanese food to be served up at this Japanese restaurant.
