Jess and I went in a cemetery tour in New Orleans.

My wife and I have been touring the country and my wife in particular is a cemetery aficionado. We found this to be the best tour we've been on. Our tour guide Glenn was professional, kind and responsive to questions that we had. Glenn was a wealth of information. It was the most well researched tour I have ever taken. Glenn is also so personable and engaging that it makes the information exciting to learn even in the southern heat. Ha ha. We were also excited to go on this tour, because we know it is part of a nonprofit to preserve the cemeteries for future generations. The tour prices were also super reasonable. Highly recommend!!!!

MUST DO! This is the tour company to take if you are wanting to tour the local historic cemeteries. Save Our Cemeteries is a non-profit organization that helps preserve the local cemeteries of New Orleans. They help with restoration, documentation, and educational programs. It's a win / win for everyone! It took me 30 years and way too many visits to finally take a tour of St. Louis #1. I've always been told by all the locals, "never go on your own", always "take a tour". After researching for years as well, once I found this non-profit org, I knew this was the tour I'd be taking on one of my many visits. Photos from 10/2013 tour

Glenn is the guide for the Sunday 10:00 am Lake Lawn Metairie Cemetery tour, which I would highly recommend. He is knowledgeable, passionate, willing to answer and further explain any questions you may have, and surprisingly not from New Jersey. Also, please do not let his cane fool you, I am pretty sure he only uses it as a statement piece because he will walk circles around you.

I am so grateful to have found Save Our Cemeteries after researching cemetery tour options. They are a true nonprofit dedicated to the maintenance of the New Orleans cemeteries, and the group size is kept manageable and personal unlike many of the other options I researched. My family and I did the Lake Lawn Metairie Cemetery Walking Tour that is offered every Sunday morning. Our guide, Glenn, was absolutely fantastic and he contributed to this tour being the highlight of our long weekend trip. It was a rather warm morning and Glenn was great about darting from tree to tree for shade and making sure we were standing in the shade for his anecdotes and history lessons. Glenn was mindful of our time and generously extended the tour after making sure that doing so would not conflict with anyone else's plans that day. The cemetery was beautiful and contained many interesting historical resting places and great examples of workmanship. We would gladly return or do another tour with Save Our Cemeteries, and we would spend as much time with Glenn as he would give us!

We kicked off our vacation to NOLA with a guided tour by Save Our Cemeteries. It was an enjoyable experience and opportunity to hear some interesting historical facts about some notable figures of the community and to learn how burial in New Orleans has evolved through the years. Glenn was very knowledgeable and we wish we had time to do other tours!

Great tour! Glenn was super knowledgeable and entertaining. It was a beautiful cemetery and learned a lot about New Orleans history.

I am such a big fan of cemeteries all across the country. We only had the opportunity to visit one cemetery and do one tour and I'm so pleased with the decision we made here. It's so easy to forget how important it is to preserve the cemeteries for future historical context and this nonprofit does a wonderful job saving our cemeteries! I wish they were a nationwide group so that I could tour with them everywhere we go. Our tour guide was Glenn and he was so amazing! Even the kids in our group were fully engaged the entire time because he was so personable and informational. The depths of research and the exciting storytelling really made this a fun experience for me. I couldn't believe that the kids in our group were still just as excited from start to finish even though it was quite a warm day. I will always keep my eye out for save our cemeteries in the future and I would not go with any other tour group in New Orleans.

I was pleasantly surprised at how great this tour was. I was originally planning to book the St Louis Tour, but I'm so glad I was able to book this tour. It was a small group with a passionate and knowledgeable guide Glenn. He provided so much insight into the history of the cemetery. I'm so glad I could support a local nonprofit that helps ensure the history of New Orleans cemetery gets shared.

We have done this tour twice. Terry was the best guide, but both relayed a lot of info. We learned how the cemetery started, how it's maintained, and how it will be perpetuated in the future. Save our cemeteries profits go toward maintaining the cemeteries, so I felt better giving my money to this organization. We learned a lot, and you can only see cemeteries with a tour group, so why not go with a group who gives back?

It never occurred to me to take a tour of a cemetery until I recently heard a story on NPR about a cemetery in New Orleans that had closed its doors to the general public. I never even knew such tours existed. My interest was definitely stoked and it was perfect timing as I was heading to New Orleans in a few weeks. After looking Yelp, I decided to give Save Our Cemeteries a try because I wanted a serious and educational experience. I ended up touring one of the most famous cemeteries in the world, St. Louis Cemetery No. 1, which was the focus of the NPR article. I wasn't sure what to expect and was worried about being bored, but time went by really fast because our guide was knowledgeable and interesting. During the tour, I learned the reason behind the raised graves and how the bones in the tombs are shifted around to make room for newcomers. I saw the burial places of many political and historical figures, even soldiers of the Revolutionary War. Of course, you can't miss Nicholas Cage's pyramid shaped tomb. When the allotted time for the tour was up, our guide led us out of the cemetery per the new guidelines. But she offered to take those of us who wanted to go back in for a second look around if we had questions or wanted more pictures. Definitely bring water, a hat and sunglasses on a hot and sunny day because there is not much shade and the reflection off the tombs can be blinding. Wear good walking shoes as the ground can be uneven in places. The cemetery can also get very crowded. And finally, I leave you with advice of the utmost importance! There is a very nice restroom located in the Basin Street Station where you meet up with the tour group.

These guys are such a great organizing, and tours are a fun, enriching way for them to raise money for their efforts. Our tour took place at Lake Lawn Metairie Cemetery, and we learned so much from our knowledgeable and personable guide, Glenn, who shared his own knowledge and experiences of local culture and history in addition to researched information. Everyone followed social distancing protocols, and Glenn took the time occasionally to make sure everyone was comfortable since it was a decently long walking tour on a remarkably cold day.

But we did have but one get one, so wasn't that upset. The tour was great. We saw some interesting, haunted places and heard the history behind them. We didn't linger too long at any one place. Our tour guide was very knowledgeable and funny, although he may have been a tad bit too heavy on the Catholic Church jokes. The tour ended at the LaLaurie house, and our guide shared a story about a little girl on who was recently on his tour who started crying and asked why there were dead people on the balcony. Spooky! I was so intrigued by what he said that I started looking up stories about Delphine LaLaurie and the haunting of the house. When I got home, I even started watching season 3 of American Horror Story, which has the character Delphine LaLaurie (accurate? No. Fun? Yes!). This was a fun way to spend the evening. There was an obnoxiously drunk guy on our tour, and our guide handled him well.

Date of tour: December 21, 2024…read more After a wonderful food tour in Prague last year, we wanted to replicate the magic stateside while visiting New Orleans, a city with a rich food history and scene. As requested, I will keep the individual location names secret as to not spoil your potential food tour but also because the stops can change and I don't want to have you disappointed if you don't get the same places on your tour. Ty was a great guide, providing us with local history and culture as we ate our way down Magazine Street. The only complaint I have is that they didn't really interact with us during the food portions, standing or sitting off to the side, or running to the next location to make sure we were all set. To me, the guide should be not only the bridge between the locations and food with us, but also a bridge between the different groups on the tour. Ty told us before the tour started that the other folks joining us were from Michigan, but we found out from them later that they were actually from New York. Had these connections been made earlier, it would have enhanced the tour. On to the food, wonderful that it all was! Please note that I may make some errors in the actual names of the food, while I took pictures, I did not write down the names and there wasn't a post-tour recap to assist me! Stop #1: A local sandwich and a seafood side. Both quite good, especially since I don't like olives! Stop #2: An unusual meat that was shockingly good! Stop #3: Seafood options. I've had a different version of one of these items in Asheville, NC. This wasn't quite as good but still tasty. Stop #4: Southern favorites that were so good! I didn't think I would like these but I did. Stop #5: A peppermint fudge cupcake. Sadly, the weakest stop on the tour. Other that tried the gelato came away disappointed and my cupcake was neither overly fudgey or pepperminty. It looked pretty, though!

To say that the Storyville Museum achieved its goals and earned five stars would be an understatement; this may very well be the best museum I've visited in at least the past three years. The story of Storyville is complex, full of nuance, and with many unanswered questions. For me, one of the hallmarks of an excellent museum is that it lets these questions linger; the rough edges are not smoothed over, and visitors leave pondering big moral and ethical questions. That's exactly how I felt: the museum gave me a fantastic scaffolding of understand about Storyville, but it was also clear that its socioeconomics, its racial and gender dynamics, and its complex intersection with local, state and federal law are vast unplowed fields of potential for masters theses and PhD dissertations. For me, the intersection between prostitution and the political power structures were fascinating. Ton Anderson is a case study of contradictions, and one could spend a career trying to peel back the layers there. So too are the intersections with New Orleans's rich musical cultures and traditions. The stories of the madams themselves were equally captivating. Josie Arlington's and Kate Townsend's lives were riveting, but so too were the countless other women who didn't achieve their considerable wealth and power. The price of admission isn't cheap, but it's well worth the investment. Plan to spend at least two hours here, and learn about an important part of New Orleans's history that's well worth seeing.

This museum blew my mind with its wide range of history!…read more Storyville Museum is self-explanatory: it goes in depth about how the community of Storyville took place. The museum dives into the infamy Storyville crafted for itself, with newspapers condemning the women, yet some of these people who protested against the practice had took part in their services. My emotions traveled from being humored at this development, to fully facing the truth that this was not all for fun and humor--for many women of Storyville, this was the other way they could keep a roof over their head. The tour details tragic incidents like violent deaths and immoral acts that took place to bring in more visitors. It's an unsightly part of New Orleans' history, but this attraction presents such things with tact and well-thought out design. I was lucky enough to have the whole museum to myself and my partner, so we spent much time really absorbing this history and discussing the bleak and disturbed reality of what was promoted as a lively form of business. I recommend others to stop by this place; it is definitely not for children or those sensitive to sexual content, violence, or abuse. If your comfortable exploring those topics, then Storyville Museum is a great attraction to visit. It was one of the most beloved spots that I found during my vacation, and I'd be happy to go again!

And like another Yelper mentioned, he provides a portfolio given to you that accentuates his tour and it's VERY well organized!! It is a very interactive tour and you get to hold very historical items. I won't say what they are so I don't ruin it, but those helped me learn a lot. It produced a strong emotion for me to experience something that was used for evil on precious children and adults. This tour really takes you deep into the mindset of things. It's about a 2 hour walking tour and I highly recommend bringing enough water (but there are no restroom breaks in between) and a hat.
