This was definitely our favorite memory and place to visit while on the island. It was cats galore! The hubs decided to spend the last day of our stay in bringing the cats some treats bought at the grocery store and make some feline friends. This place has great shade and benches to sit and relax, enjoy the sea breeze, and observe some kitties. The cats roam freely and on their own accord here at this cat sanctuary. Some will approach you (with or without treats) as each have their own personality and curiosity barometer. There was a donation box if you wish to contribute. The cats here are well looked after with food, water, and clean litter boxes. They don't seem to fight with each other much and are well behaved grooming themselves.

So many cats! The area is well kept and clean! There's a nice shaded area to sit and pet the cats. The sanctuary is right before the red San Juan gate.

Who is out here on Beyoncé's internet rating a cat sanctuary with anything less than five stars? Are you just trying to hide the good stuff, knowing the crazy cat ladies will come anyway? Cats, wandering around. 10/10, no notes.

This organization has made Old San Juan a cat lover's paradise. I was absolutely charmed when I saw all the cats and when I found out what this organization does for them. You could tell those cats are loved, well-fed and well taken care of. They are so friendly and not afraid of humans. I got to hold a few of them and almost made it late to the ship because cats are just so irresistible!

SO. MANY. GATO It was so cute seeing all the cats just minding their own business, checking us out, and playing with eachother. Definitely come check this place out if you love cats. They all just kinda roam around the park and basketball court.

I'd recommend checking this spot out when you see the fort. It's a small building and pretty area with lots of friendly kitties roaming around. Very cute and looks well taken care of.

Unless you are allergic, you probably know that cats make pretty much everything better. That's why I'm so glad for this wonderful, volunteer-run organization dedicated to the wellbeing of the Old San Juan gatos. They do T/N/R and then care for the cats with feeding and litter stations, as well as veterinary care costs. I have donated to several of their fundraisers and they do put that money to good use. The gatos are a city attraction on their own right. They add even more character to the historical surroundings. You can visit the ones down Paseo la Princesa toward El Morro and many of them will act like little tour guides along parts of the trek. Also, check in with the Casita ones, a few steps away from La Rogativa and with amazing views of the bay. Many will come to you and it is very likely that you'll fall in love with one or two. Use the opportunity for wonderful photos! Donations through PayPal for the organization. They are on Facebook and Instagram. As an extra, I was delighted to see that the cats weathered the hurricane ok. These are some badass gatos, and mega charming!

So there we were in Old Town San Juan at Paseo Del Morro, just walking around. But what's up with all these cats? As we approached a pink building, there were cats everywhere. As we learned, this is the shelter for Save A Gato, an organization that feeds and does health care for the huge population of cats in Old San Juan. Run by volunteers. "Gato" of course is the Spanish word for cat. We went inside and checked it out. Lots of cats in cages. They take donations thru their website for those so inclined. http://www.saveagato.org/ http://www.today.com/id/26167636/ns/today-today_pets_and_animals/t/cat-fight-brewing-over-san-juans-feral-felines/#.UbgMJubn_3g

Service way beyond to help me adopt a fragile cat. Irma was personally involved. Gabriella has a few guardian angels and Irma is one.

I love taking care of cats. They are so cute and some walk right up to you. Some of them are helpless in need of help.

I have a soft spot for needy animals. I just can't stand it of how people on this island treat…read moretheir pets. Pets are part of your family, and unfortunately in St. Thomas many people see dogs and cats as a way to make money through breeding, something to torture that can't fight back or they just neglect them. This is also a very difficult housing market to convince landlords to accept pets. The hubby and I have been lucky to find places here that will accept pets. But beware they may change their mind after you start living there like we experienced with one crazy landlord lady. So all of this means that this organization has its work cut out for them. I've volunteered here as well as fostered and adopted from these folks and it is a small group of people that do amazing things with so little. After the hurricanes hit they flew all of their animals stateside to rescues that would take them because the shelter was badly damaged. So many people fled after the hurricanes, leaving their pets behind permanently that the shelter quickly filled up again so they organized another large transport out stateside of over 50 animals. All of the funding to do these kinds of things are through donations and a thrift store they run at the front of their campus that has been inundated with donations after the hurricanes. So if you are unable to volunteer or foster, you can support this non-profit by shopping! If you're traveling here here consider taking a dog or cat back as check in luggage or a carry on through the pets with wings program that finds travelers going to the states where rescues have partnered with the st. Thomas humane society to find their adoptable animals forever homes. There is no cost to the traveler and the rescue will meet you at the airport to pickup the animal. A society is judged by the way they treat their animals. St. Thomas has a long way to go on this front but the humane society and its team of volunteers is a wonderful hope that it can get better here. #St.Thomas #USVI

If you are here on vacation and have a few hours, I highly recommend that you stop by. They take day-of volunteers (but call first to make sure it's a good day), and you can walk the dogs around the trails, and play with the cats. The cats were so incredibly sweet and definitely don't get enough love! We miss the sweet animals we got to see.
