When you drive down the streets of Vieques, you'll quickly notice two things. The horses grazing across the island, and unfortunately, a large amount of stray dogs that would appear to be homeless.
From visiting with the locals, the Vieques Humane Society is hard at work to provide spaying/neutering for these strays.
They also have a program, which due to time constraints we weren't able to do, where people can go play with the rescue dogs on Friday afternoons. It's a nice win win - the dogs get to frolic around and have fun, and so do you! It's like a super short term fostering.
They've got their work cut out for them for sure, but it's good to know that they're working hard. If you go to to Vieques, consider donating or donating some time with the pups. read more
