I swim here every week. I come early in the morning for lap swim. I like it a lot.
The facility is lovely, no doubt. It's modern and clean and in good shape. The pool itself is a pleasure to swim in. It's waveless - meaning the water and the edge of the pool are at the same level. It's easier to get in and out of than regular pools. The deep end is nice and deep and the pool is an even 100" long so you can easily measure your distance in laps. It's soundproofed so even though I wear hearing aids I can hear people talking in the pool area when I'm not wearing them. Most of all I love the entire south-side wall made of windows. The natural light just feels really great while getting my exercise on.
What I don't like:
I wish the lanes were set up more consistently; some days the fast lanes are narrow, and some days they are huge, and this inconsistency is kind of disorienting to the mindset of a regular lap swim.
I wish the fast lane wasn't a giant lane because that invites people that aren't really fast enough for the lane, and passing people throws my swimming rhythm off.
I wish the Lifeguards were better about making sure people were swimming in a speed-appropriate lane. It's really frustrating to watch someone jump into your lane and then see everyone who was already there piled up in a line behind them as they thrash their way down the lane. Sometimes you will see a Lifeguard asking people to switch to a more appropriate lane, and they once even created a new fast lane because there were just too many people. Most of the time, though, they watch but they're not really proactive in regulating the flow of traffic, as it were.
To the ladies who leave their crap in the changing stalls: this doesn't make it yours. I will not hesitate to move your shit if you are nowhere in sight and I want a changing room. Get a locker like everyone else: you are not special.
There is one Lifeguard, a short, older woman with long hair, and she is pretty much a total bitch. I have never had one positive interaction with her, and from what I can tell she doesn't actually give a damn about swimmers.
All in all, this is a much better place than where I used to swim, Garfield Pool, which is a run down facility in a crappy neighborhood. It's a bit of a drive for me but I don't mind it at all. If you don't like this place, oh well. More room for us at Sava, and you can see for yourself just how good Sava is in comparison to most o f the rest of SF public pools. read more
