I recently acquired a 1997 Mercedes s320 that I had been looking for in good condition for over a year and finally found the one that met all my personal checkmarks. I've loved these vintage Mercedes for a long time and unfortunately after about 8 months of ownership my check engine light was on and definitely felt like the vehicle was misfiring. Instead of taking the car to the dealer, my buddy had recommended taking my car to Sausalito European. They had a recent change of ownership and I've heard nothing but good reviews about the new owners. I gave them a call and spoke with Tom about the issues I was having and small touch ups I wanted to get fixed on the car. He brought the lead technician, Scott, on the phone who had been working on Mercedes for 20+ years. Scott answered all my detailed questions and was not giving me the rigamarole. Feeling confident after our conversation, I take my car in on a Friday as I'll be away for work the next week. Tom asks me when I'll need the car back and I tell him, "when it's done, I don't want to rush this which could cause sloppy work." Scott found that the reason my car was misfiring was due to oil contamination on the ignition coils because my valve cover was leaking. I had also previously mentioned that my oil pressure gauge was stuck on high (oil level was correct), passenger rear window would make noise going up and down, same door speaker was rattling and driving me nuts, wanted a new radio installed, and transmission fluid flush including torque converter fluid drain. While I was in Atlanta Tom had called me and said when removing the passenger rear window to replace the window regulator (which was causing the noise) the window tint had been slightly scratched. When he called he said he already made an appointment with a tint company to fix it ASAP. Everybody makes mistakes and since it was such minor issue that they owned up to (obviously at no extra charge) I was just happy to hear that they had a game plan to fix it. Looking at pictures of the scratch I might not have even noticed it right away. Even with this issue happening I still got my car back the following Monday when I was back from work. Everybody is looking for an honest shop/mechanic and I can confidently say these guys fixed all the issues I had spoken to them about (1500 miles later after pickup no problems). They even gave my car a complimentary wash and a discount off my original quote which I didn't expect. I will definitely be coming back here for work I want done on my car. As soon as the warrantee ran out on our 2016 BMW X3 I did some research and found Sausalito Imports. They run it by the book in terms of schedule and OEM parts - quality shop! I can drop it off in the am and walk home then walk back in the evening to pick it up. You don't get stuff like an espresso machine in a fancy lobby or a car wash and vacuum but I have a Nespresso at home and can drive to the Shell on Bridgeway. Totally recommend. read more

I don't post often, but I had an excellent experience with this repair shop... I walked out to my low mileage but older 325i last week, and despite the car being OFF and the door locked, every warning light on the dash was lit up, the wipers were randomly running, the dashboard words were completely scrambled (just a bunch of lines) -- and of course the battery was just about run down. I called the owner, "Chris" (who had been previously recommended to me) the following morning. I was next going to call AAA, but first off, Chris offered to come over and jump start the car for me, which he did, and I was able to drive (slowly) a few blocks to his shop. He determined that day that the main control module was not working correctly (he plugged in a working one and everything went back to normal), and also that it needed a new battery (it still had the original one). He ordered the module for me, but when it arrived, he called to let me know that after the car sitting a couple days, when he reinstalled the fuses and new battery, everything worked! The computer had apparently reset itself, so the gentleman saved me probably $1400. I then had him do a general maintenance service on the car (which was due), and between that and the computer reset, it now runs even more smoothly and quietly than it did before. Anyway, I am very happy to have found this shop! read more

I've been bringing my 2000 323i to Chris for the three years I've owned it. I make the drive from San Francisco to Sausalito to have my car repaired because Chris is honest, fast and is a great BMW mechanic. He also saves all the parts and explains everything he has done i a way I can understand it. I went to several Yelp rated mechanics in the city before coming to Chris and didn't have great experiences. One mechanic let my brakes fail because he said I was unhappy about it when he initially tried to bring it up, so he let it go. I'm happy to make the drive to Sausalito for a good and trustworthy mechanic. There's no shuttle to San Francisco, but on a nice day I get a ride from one of his assistants to the ferry and take a beautiful ferry ride back to the city. read more

Chris, Mark S., formerly of Sausalito and now back East, and (still) the owner of a 1993 VW Passat GLX 6 speed Manual, was remiss (5 yrs ago, on my departure and return to New York City) in posting a review on Yelp. I'm now doing so: in my view I give six (6) stars. Ladies and Gentlemen, if you need a trustworthy, honest, and diligent repair man for a foreign (or domestic, if need be) vehicle, then Chris is the man to see. Over the course of my 5 yrs in Sausalito, he and his team completed several jobs on my VW, a few of which were difficult to diagnose by other men, but not Chris. He did front end work, installed a fuel pump, did a couple of tune-ups, installed exterior door handles, brakes, trouble-shot a difficult electronics problem, and more. And he did it for a VERY fair price - a lot less than I would have paid had I gone to another import specialist, or a VW dealer. I was able to keep my "baby" on the road - and drive back East. At 25 yo and (only) 200K miles, it is still running strong and looking good. I'm glad that held onto it - see if you can find a VW Passat of that age on a car buying web site. Good Luck. I purchased a 2000 BMW 540i several years ago. A friend told me to take the car to Sausalito Imports for anything I needed to have done to it. So I drove to Marin City and met Chris. Both he and his wife are supremely sweet people! Chris is definitely the "go to" mechanic for BMW!!! Chris is a good mechanic with good staff, but as a woman who knows little about cars and just want to be safe and keep the car in good shape, I feel I was taken advantage of....I have a ten year old car and he convinced me that much of the parts should be replaced because it was ten years old....for nearly $2,000. He recommended another $1,800 that needed to be done. I decided to take a breather and got a second opinion. The person I went to had serviced my previous car...he confirmed that all that I was charged for was preformed but that just because my car was ten years old did not mean all of the services needed to be done.....my mileage was low and the car in good condition. The recommended service of $1,800 was done for under $400 by the new mechanic, and I am assured my car is safe and will function well. So beware of being pushed for services that are not necessary. read more

When the maintenance contract ran out on my BMW X5 I started looking for a good mechanic to keep the service up. No easy task as most know, and often you never know what your going to get. After checking out a few local places I dropped by and spoke with Chris. I mentioned a couple of things I wanted to take care of and Chris right away wanted to see the car; no other shop offered to do that. We reviewed my concerns and I was told that not all I thought needed work did so. How refreshing that was.. honesty. We talked about what needed to be done, timing, and costs none of which left me gasping for air. I left the car there and the work was performed to exactly what Chris had told me. Top notch and very professional with ethics and integrity; not easy to come by these days. Since then it's like I never left the dealership, and I get advice and reminders on what I can do to extend the life of my X5 and save money.
