I called to schedule a basic oil change. The owner answered and said they could fit me in that day. Two hours later when I went to pay, he casually mentioned I was "lucky" to get a full diagnostic, something I never requested and was never informed would be conducted. Sure enough, I was charged over $50 for a diagnostic exam I didn't authorize. The paperwork included multiple pages of supposed issues with my car, none of which were flagged when I had it professionally serviced at the dealership just weeks before. Under California law, it is illegal for an auto repair shop to perform and charge for any service without prior authorization. This violates the Automotive Repair Act and is considered fraud. What should have been a routine oil change turned into the most expensive one I've ever had, due to a service I didn't ask for and wasn't told about until after the fact. The total was $182.66, even after a $25 discount, padded with inflated charges for basic items like the oil filter and parts cleaner. To make matters worse, as I drove off, all four of my tire pressure warning lights began flashing. Either they incorrectly messed with the pressure or didn't know how to reset the sensor. Neither possibility inspires confidence. I'm just hoping no actual damage was either intentionally or unintentionally done to my car. If this is how they generate revenue, it is not just unethical. It is illegal. I won't be returning, and yes, I do wonder if being a woman played a role in their predatory behavior. Also worth noting: the receipt lists the diagnostic as a "complimentary 30 point inspection," yet I was charged $50 for it. Complimentary means free. read more

Sucks to have to write this. The owner tried to severely rip me off on back breaks. He flat out lied his face off. I brought the car in to have the new battery calibrated. I then asked for a diagnostic. The owner said "your back breaks are at maybe 2%, I'm surprised you aren't getting notifications." He also said front breaks are maybe 50%. He quoted me $1200 for new pads and rotors. I barely drove the car over the next several months worried about the breaks. Today I brought the car to another garage to replace the pads. They quoted me half ($660) and then called me to tell me the back breaks are fine, at close to 60% and front breaks are even better. Elias, do better. Update: the owner just responded, notice he doesn't acknowledge that his assessment of 2% was wildly wrong. He just tries to defend his attempt to rip me off. You got it wrong and were way off. He then attacks the credibility of the other garage that told me the breaks and pads are fine. Also their quote was for both pads and rotors. **Oh and to drive urgency he tried to claim Tariffs would spike costs. Elias, you are as shady as they come. read more

My tire pressure light came on while I was on the freeway, neither of the two gas stations I stopped at would turn on their air, and I was starting to panic a little bit especially since I was with my little boys. Graciously, Elias told me they would check my tire pressure and add air if needed; it was needed. Apparently your tire pressure can go down when it is very cold out. I have to say that excellent customer service, in general, is increasingly a rarity, despite the fact that it keeps patrons returning again and again in addition to suggesting the business to their friends. We got out of our car - prepared for a magical hike. All of a sudden I heard a hissing sound. I called my husband over and we discovered that there was a razor blade wedged into our back tire. It was quickly losing air. We quickly got into the car and we headed back towards the bay. My husband pulled over for gas and to further examine the tire. I noticed across the street - Mill Valley Auto Service. We looked them up on Yelp and we saw their positive ratings and that they did tire repair/replacing etc. We took some deep breaths and rolled on over. From the moment we stepped out of the car - we knew our car was in good hands. Lucas - the resident dog was there to greet us - in fine adorable form. As Lucas basked in the shade beneath a nearby car - the owner (I believe) was quick to get our car elevated so that he could examine the tire closer. He promptly informed us that he thought the tire could be fixed. Without hesitation - him and his incredible team removed the tire and they began working on it. While we waited we enjoyed the sunny weather and gushed over Lucas the dog. I was particularly impressed with how well set-up Mill Valley Auto service is for customers. Their bathroom is spotless and there was an array of different kinds of coffee and even biscotti while you waited. It's in a ideal location for those who need to kill extended periods of time - next to a fantastic coffee spot and close to a plethora of great stores as well. Within a couple of minutes we learned that our tire had been successfully patched up. The cost was fantastic and the service couldn't have been more on point. If you ever find yourself in a similar predicament - come here. The owner(s) and staff are amazing and they will do their best to help you and your vehicle. Very disappointing. Got insurance on my tires on Elias's recommendation. Then had a nail. Elias charged me to remove the nail, but then said the tire could not be repaired. He then charged me for a new tire (as well as install), and said he would submit the tire insurance claim to his vendor. I checked in after one month and then after 2 months, and he said the claim had still not gone through. Never heard from him. I forgot about it, and after several months check back in to see what happened. He said that now it had been too long, and offered me a credit for future work, but said he could not cut me a check, despite the fact that he never contacted me regarding the claim he was supposed to submit and follow-up with. He is a nice guy, but this is unacceptable. It appears that he got the reimbursement from the tire company, but will only provide it now as a "credit" at this shop. This was not what the tire insurance provided for. read more

I've been going there for around 8 years and he's always taken great care of my car and made me feel confident that I'm not paying for stuff I don't need. Having a mechanic you can trust is so huge, especially if you are someone who doesn't know much about cars and who also lives paycheck to paycheck. (Marin housing is expensive and teachers don't get paid enough!) I had a tire that kept deflating after adding more air. I called Mill Valley Auto Service and they told me to bring my car in and that they were really busy so to expect a wait. Elias immediately saw the nail in my tire. Despite being extremely busy they took care of my car within an hour and were so nice and professional. I will always come back for service here. I couldn't get an appointment in at the maker of my car until the end of the month so I'm glad I found this place. They are priced very fairly and everyone there is nice and doesn't try to take advantage of you like some other auto service places. Unreasonably overpriced. They charged me $60 to drill in a front license plate. It took a total of 10 minutes.

All around great service. We have an old Lexus RX 300 that pretty much runs like a charm even after 20 years. We went to this place for an annual tune up. Within an hour after I dropped the car, they sent me by text a copy of 10s of computerized diagnostic tests confirming that the car was in top shape. Then, they changed the oil, filters, chassis lube, etc. Tested a bunch of other stuff. When I paid, they also gave me a computerized testing output of the battery, confirming it was in good shape. Total price $77. Total time: 2 hours. Compare that to a similar tune up at your brand of car auto dealership. Similar work would cost you $300 to $400 with inferior diagnostic technology. And, the turnaround time is also typically measured in days. This was my first time. In the office area another customer was waiting. So, I asked me if he had been a customer for long. He told me for over 15 years. He has 3 cars regularly maintained by Paul's shop. And, his daughter has become a customer too. Based on my firsthand experience, I can see why! read more

My car had a sound that was coming from the dashboard . When I called I was told I ( owner ) would be in the car to do a road test so that the sound can be pointed out. When I arrived for my appointment, not only I was told that wasn't the case, but I was asked to authorize them to do the road taste and diagnose it . I was given a form to sign which I did like I do with my mechanic and many mechanics or other professionals that I have had come diagnose an issue with an alliance . Not one word was given on the fact there would be a cost to the diagnosis let alone what that cost would be . The diagnosis after a short time was provided as a little rubber moulding coming off the wind screen which is not big deal. When I arrived to pick up my car to my utter shock and disgust I was charged close to $200 for this simple diagnosis . They went ok to apologize but this doesn't cut it for me as it's unethical to stick a charge for something when not a word of this was mentioned ahead of time . I would not recommend this auto shop to anyone for this unethical unprofessional approach ti business. They said they want to make this right but I think the only thing they can do is refund me the money to make it right . Disgusted utterly . And I plan to take further action . read more

I was in need of an oil change + new tires & front brake pads. After doing my homework on Yelp, I found Mill Valley Auto Service (which is just a few miles from where I live). Yay! This is a family-run mechanic shop. Paul and his son ?? took excellent care of me and my Mazda Sport. I called first thing in the morning to schedule an appointment, and, lo and behold, they were able to see me within the hour. If you're just going in for a quick lube job, then this is definitely the spot for you. If you use their online coupon, an oil change is just $30 (much cheaper and more reliable than Jiffy Lube). Plus, there's a lot you can do while you wait for your vehicle. They have an Equator Coffee next door as well as some cutesy boutiques and a garden supply store. Or, you can just hang out in outside the office sipping water or coffee while playing with their dog Lucas. If your auto service requires more time, the Dipsea Cafe is just a hop, skip and a jump away. For my particular service, they needed a few hours. Fortunately, they were kind enough to drive me home. I'm clearly no automotive expert, but I would say that the pricing here is very fair (especially when it comes to tires). The staff is friendly and reliable. And more importantly, my Mazda is back in tip-top shape with brand new wheels and brakes. I would highly recommend Mill Valley Auto Service for your car's needs. read more

Went in for an oil change. They ran a "free" diagnostic check on my vehicle and told me a bunch of fluids needed to be replaced. They priced it out for me and wanted around $1100. I knew that number wasn't right. I think they were trying to pull one on me because I'm a young woman. I called around to other mechanics to get quotes and was shocked by how much less they all wanted! I went with Robin's Auto Service who was fantastic and ended up only charging me less than $250~ for what Mill Valley Auto wanted to charge me nearly $1100 for!!! Felt MV auto was dishonest and looking to over charge me on purpose. Robin has me and my family's business now for life! Don't go to MV Auto unless you want to overpay by A LOT. read more

I feel like I was swindled at MVAS. The good news is that they took me as a drive in a couple hours in advance and were nice about the. The guy who worked at the desk was also very nice and didn't feel like a salesman or anything like that. I have to give it two stars though...I was quoted at $1200 to fix all four of my brakes. I felt that it was steep, but wasn't sure. Anyways, it would have taken a full day and I'm not local so I just paid for the brake check and oil change. I took my car to a mechanic in my neighborhood and I paid $200 total for two brake pad replacements. He mentioned that my front wheels had a good 6 months of wear left on them, but the back did need replacing. Came here after reading Kevin B's review. I appreciate the integrity of the owner, who was very straightforward about the service (oil, rotate tires, etc) my Suby needed. It helps that there is an Equator next door and Good Earth to pass the time while you wait, so I recommend coming early, to avoid Stinson traffic too. I had an unexpected visit to Mill Valley Auto Service when I was on my way to Muir Woods and my oil pressure light came on, with the system telling me to shut the car off immediately. I pulled into a lot a block away and looked up the nearest shop which sent me to Paul. I talked with Paul and explained what was going on and he gave me some oil to add to the car (2015 VW Golf) and told me to drive it over and he would take a look. This was not a dead day, he had things going on and cars on the lift, but he dropped everything and immediately took a look at my car since I was stuck there. He was very helpful and explained what was going on and what he was going to look at, what the possible outcomes were, and an estimate of the price for each. After about 10 minutes he came out and informed me that a previous oil change I had gotten a few weeks before was done incorrectly and that all he needed to do was replace the filter and oil. 15 minutes later I pay for an oil change and everything is in perfect working order again. The service at this shop is excellent and frankly beyond what I've come to expect from auto shops (lots of bad experience unfortunately), especially with me just dropping in unexpectedly, so I was incredibly relieved. He laid out what I needed to look for in the coming weeks just to make sure everything continued to work and said I could come back any time if the issue came back, and explained what may need to be done if the issue did come back. The transparency of the whole process is enough to make me come back and the quality of work seals the deal. I've definitely found my go to spot for auto repair. I called first to ask about the coupon, $29.95, for the oil change. I wanted to know if the oil change included any inspections. The person who answered the phone said it did not. A more expensive oil change would include inspections. The next call I made, I asked again about inspections and I was told by Paul, the $29.95 oil change did include inspections so I made an appointment for the next morning (today) at 9:00 AM. Today, I wanted to call to ask to change my appointment time but I thought it would be inconsiderate so I pushed myself and raced to get there on time. I was coming from San Anselmo and it's apx 11 miles. I got there on time and I could see that all the mechanics were busy with cars so I was skeptical that my 9:00 appt would be honored. It was not. First Paul asked me what kind of oil I wanted. What the? I had never been asked this question in my life. Aren't auto shops supposed to know what my car needs? Next, he had to go to my car twice to get information. He printed out the service paper for me to sign and there was a space to enter the time. I looked at my phone and put the time in. It was 9:09. Paul said the oil change would take 1 hour and that someone would drive my car into the garage in five minutes. That didn't happen. I sat and waited. While waiting, two different women called him to change their appointment times for today. He said yes to both of them. I guess he didn't want to lose their business. At 9:30, when my car still had not been moved into the garage, I told Paul I was going to go. He said he had told me that the oil change would take one hour and that the hour wasn't up. I began to tell him that I had gotten there on time and that 2 different women called to change their appointments and I deserved some courtesy. He began to shout at me to not tell him how to run his business. I was calmly trying to tell him how I had wanted to change the appt but, instead, raced there to be on time and that my car was still outside, etc... He kept shouting at me so I left. I felt like a fool to have been thinking about the mechanic's time and being a courteous customer only to have been disrespected by this person who it turns out is the manager/owner! Yikes! Since when does an owner call himself a manager? Very odd. I'm stunned that any Mill Valley resident would go to this place, let alone have one good thing to say about it or the owner, Paul Haddad. I wish I didn't need to use coupons. Do wealthy people have to deal with this kind of treatment at the better auto repair shops? read more
