Chueca is the undisputed epicenter of LGBTQ+ life in Madrid, so Jamie W and I made a beeline to…read morethis vibrant gayborhood from our hotel on our very first night. Our evening had a disappointing start at D'Mystic, a popular spot packed with a mixed crowd and staffed with indifferent bartenders. This lapse was remedied when we left and walked over to what we read was a festive lounge. During the day, it's apparently a low-key brunch cafe, and in fact, they were still serving sandwiches and desserts on the main floor. However, up on the second floor is a stylish bar lounge with energetic dance music and a decidedly tropical decor. We weren't quite ready to cut a rug because we aren't extroverts.By the time we sat down at our table, the bar was just starting to attract looser limbed customers. Besides, the tiki cocktail menu beckoned us. Jamie went for the 10€ Coco Loco which had equal parts tequila blanco, vodka, and rum, while I ordered their signature 12€ Pina Colada with rum, pineapple juice, and coconut cream (Photo 10). They hit our respective spots and finally gave us the classic Chueca vibe. OK, we were finally ready to dance like Elaine on "Seinfeld". Give us room, will ya? COCKTAILS - 4 stars...desirable tiki libations nicely executed AMBIANCE - 4 stars...the right breezy-clubby vibe SERVICE - 4 stars...good guys at the bar TOTAL - 4 stars...adds to Chueca's cred CORRESPONDING REVIEW D'Mystic: https://yelp.to/5zrmEunpjU RELATED - Exploring Madrid? We had an extremely unpleasant experience at this bar. We arrived on a very rainy night and, as is…read morecommon in bars and restaurants in Madrid, we left our umbrellas at the entrance. A few minutes later, the man at the reception entered the bar shouting loudly: "Who were the guys who left the umbrellas at the entrance?" The way this was handled was disrespectful, aggressive, and completely inappropriate. The music and the party practically stopped because of the scene, and we were publicly exposed in a deeply embarrassing and humiliating way. There was no attempt at dialogue whatsoever -- only shouting, intimidation, and public shaming, reflecting ignorance and a total lack of professionalism. The attitude was violent and incompatible with a venue that presents itself as a space for the gay community, where one would expect at least respect, care, and a welcoming environment. We do not recommend this place. There is a clear lack of education, empathy, and basic respect for customers. Though listed as a gay bar, and it does have a good number of young (as in 16...forget that the sign says you must be 18.....) to 25 year old gay guys in it, it also seems to attract a near equal number of heteros out to party with the female dates. After all, when it comes to liveliness, there are few places that can compare with a good friendly bar loaded with a mix of gays and straights as well as those of undetermined orientation. It has a young following and though I exceeded the average age of the other patrons by a mere half century, had a good time drinking and chatting with everyone. Matter of fact, the atmosphere about the place is sort of club like, everyone friendly and just there to enjoy a good time.

While the atmosphere was friendly and the…read morestaff were welcoming, there were more than a few tables that had the remains of previous meals, so seating space was sparse. I sat at a dirty table and sort of stacked things off to the side, and a nice staffer came and properly bussed the table. He smiled and apologized- they were just getting over the lunch rush. No worries there. The food that arrived, was not what I've come to expect from my brief time here in Spain. I didn't expect gourmet quality, but it was a bit dry and needed something more than just the bland tomato. I wound up not finishing it. Service and decor and attitude - full marks. I'd have to cautiously try another menu item again before recommending anything more in the food department.
