Lakama Cafe, not to be confused with Lakama Bar a few blocks away, is a laid-back but trendy gay bar with a 2-floor space. While street level has comfortable seating, the upstairs is where the crowd goes. It has a small circular bar and two-top table seating, with prime spots on the small balconies overlooking the street life. The bar was filled with gay men both times we went on weekend nights after 10PM. Specialty tropical cocktails are their, well specialty! Using every type of liquor available, there is bound to be something to suit your mood. Ask for the menu. I enjoyed a Brambles which has excellent gin, but it was a bit too sweet for my taste. The bar and wait staff are cute friendly guys, and the current uniform is white t-shirts/tank-tops with denim overalls shorts. Who knew overalls would make a comeback?

Very chic, very handsome waiters, very good pours on alcohol! A must visit while in Chueca...

Chueca is the undisputed epicenter of LGBTQ+ life in Madrid, so Jamie W and I made a beeline to…read morethis vibrant gayborhood from our hotel on our very first night. Our evening had a disappointing start at D'Mystic, a popular spot packed with a mixed crowd and staffed with indifferent bartenders. This lapse was remedied when we left and walked over to what we read was a festive lounge. During the day, it's apparently a low-key brunch cafe, and in fact, they were still serving sandwiches and desserts on the main floor. However, up on the second floor is a stylish bar lounge with energetic dance music and a decidedly tropical decor. We weren't quite ready to cut a rug because we aren't extroverts.By the time we sat down at our table, the bar was just starting to attract looser limbed customers. Besides, the tiki cocktail menu beckoned us. Jamie went for the 10€ Coco Loco which had equal parts tequila blanco, vodka, and rum, while I ordered their signature 12€ Pina Colada with rum, pineapple juice, and coconut cream (Photo 10). They hit our respective spots and finally gave us the classic Chueca vibe. OK, we were finally ready to dance like Elaine on "Seinfeld". Give us room, will ya?
