Sauchiehall Street is changeable. How much I enjoy being there depends where on the street I am as well as what time of day it is and what day of the week.
To start at the West End it's leafy and green, a stone's throw from Kelvingrove Park and the Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum, and handy for a whole bunch of Finnieston Favourites. It passes great bars and restaurants like The Big Slope and Mother India but for a large stretch, heading towards the town centre, there isn't a lot going on. It's plesant enough, but not especially exciting.
After the motorway you reach the pubs and clubs part of Sauchiehall Street. This, again, is variable. I've had many a good night listening to Open Mic in Nice N Sleazy's but if I ever set foot in Campus or The Garage again, it'll be too soon. The ABC might be a cheap and cheerful student favourite for sticky club nights, but it's another great live music venue as well. Restaurants around here can be hit and miss but the hits probably do out-weigh the misses and places like the CCA really shine.
A little further along and Sauchiehall Street becomes pedestrianised. Here we hit the City Centre and the start of the "Style Mile." Cafes are more along the lines of chains like Starbucks and Costa, but there's also The Willow Tea Rooms which shoudn't be overlooked. Mostly what you've got here, though, is highstreet shopping, which isn't bad for a bit of retail therapy.
So, I love the West of Sauchiehall Street with its leafy avenues and Finnieston vibes. The middle is ok (except at 3 am for club kicking out time when it should be avoided) and the end is fine, but nothing out of the ordinary. There's a lot to explore here but its a long street with a lot of different things going on - one day can be very different to the next. read more
