I'm extremely fond of this stylish part of Glasgow; I love the old architecture, the shops (so different from the 'chain stores' in the centre) and the cafes and restaurants (especially two excellent vegetarian ones!) The lovely little Tron Theatre is here too, the graceful Tron Steeple, the tall and beautiful Tolbooth, the Mercat Cross, old cobbled streets and a great atmosphere definitely an area worth exploring.
Centuries ago this was actually the centre of Glasgow; the city merchants were responsible for the growth and prosperity of the city. The name 'Merchant City', is however, a much more recent one.
Daniel Defoe wrote of this area, The four principal streetsare the fairest for breadth and the finest built that I have ever seen'tis the cleanest, most beautiful and best built city in Great Britain The lower storeys, for the most part, stand on vast doric columns with arches which open into the shops adding to the strength as well as to the beauty of the buildings.
In the 1980s Glasgow saw the start of a Glasgow-wide regeneration symbolised by the 'Glasgow's miles better' campaign. In addition, an initiative was established in 2000 which helped develop this area into a cultural heart for the city.
It's not far from the modern city centre and is also close to the beautiful Glasgow Green park and river walks. The transport links are excellent; the open top tour bus comes through here too so it's easy to hop on or off along the route. There's so much to see and do in Merchant City - I can't recommend it highly enough! read more
