One thing I'll say Buchanan Street: It's never boring. It sits in the centre of Glasgow's "Style Mile" or "Golden Z", flanked by Sauchiehall Street at one end and Argyle Street at the other. This broad, pedestrianised street is all about the shopping, sure there are a few cafes, bars and restaurants there to give the shoppers a chance for a rest and some refreshments, but shopping is the point.
You can find everything from Abercrombie to Urban Outfitters. At the top end you have the Buchanan Galleries, a medium sized shopping mall with all the big names, including John Lewis at one side and a food court at the other. Wandering further down you'll find other, smaller complexes including the gleaming jewellery destination, Argyle Arcade, the upmarket Prince's Square (check out the peacock on top of the building outside and the Foucalt pendulum indoors) and, on Saturday's, the smaller Sloans/Little birds market.
You need the Apple Store? You got it. You need Scotland's largest Paperchase? It's right there. You need a shop dedicated specifically to Sketchers trainers because the other two shops who sell Sketchers don't have enough variety for you? No problem. Buchanan Street is the largest shopping thoroughfare in Scotland and is the 6th most expensive in the UK for retail rent prices. If you visit on a bright Saturday afternoon, it's easy to see why - the foot traffic has an intimidating density. If you don't like crowds, consider saving your shopping for some other time.
It's not only the high street stores that take advantage of the shear number of people visiting this street - expect the very best in buskers and street performers to be there, working as hard as they can to grab your attention. Look out for Caledonian, a group of drummers and bagpipe players who play enthusiastic and upbeat traditional Scottish music to the delight of tourists (and are happy to sell you their album too). Don't be surprised to see a Slash look-a-like playing guitar, a chap who plays the fiddle whilst tight-rope walking, living statues or, if you're really lucky, a set of really quite talented jazz artists who often play separately but really come into their own when they team up.
I've been on Buchanan Street at 5 am on a Tuesday. I've been on Buchanan Street at 3 pm on a Saturday. I've been on Buchanan Street at 1 am on a Friday. I've yet to find myself on Buchanan Street with nothing happening. It can be busy to the point of being overwhelming but it can never, ever be dull. read more
