I've gone to 98B's Saturday X Future Market twice: Once as a seller, and another as a shopper. It's a great place to check out if you're looking for something off the beaten path. 98B has set out to be a consistent presence in Escolta, in their efforts to revive the area back to what Escolta's been known for in our history books. What's great is that not only city folk and people from the art scene travel all the way here every month, but even local folks from Binondo area. I've sold some stuff to a Chinese grandmother and her grandson, and a construction worker in the area. There's really something for everyone, even children.
The market's really much like a flea market, but teeming with all these fascinating odds and ends from both the past and the present. Some sellers have tables set up, and some do it guerilla style, with a "latag" set-up: a mat/blanket and their wares on the floor. Most of the sellers are also the makers of their products, so whatever you buy can come with a nice little story you can take with it, if you chat up your seller.
Events like these really showcase the talents of starting local artists, crafters, and creators. If you're looking to find some unique treasures, things that tell stories, and basically something you won't see normally in mall shelves behind shiny glass, this is a market not to be missed! If you're a foreigner/traveler, don't pass this up if you're looking to bring home some trinkets with you back home.
Some tips: Wear light, breathable clothes as the place can get really hot, and there are only a few fans in strategic locations in the selling area. If you get hungry, there's a mamang taho vendor nearby the entrance sometimes, especially in the morning. His taho is delicious! read more
