This is one of the best pizza spots in Gainesville! The quality of the pizza is top notch! It's one of the few pizza places where I actually enjoy eating the crust because the breading is so fresh and fluffy. The menu is a bit difficult to follow because it's so colorful, but the staff is pretty helpful with explaining the popular dishes. Satchels has great ambiance. It's a cute little place with a shop attached to the restaurant. You have the option to sit inside a bus or inside the restaurant. I've never sat inside the bus because the wait is usually too long, but it looks cute from the outside! The drawbacks to this place include the price and the location. The price is a bit high for pizza. For a slice of the Mama or the Major, it's between $5-6 which is a bit steep. Even though it's a bit pricy, the quality is really good, so I think it's worth it every once in a while. Another drawback is the location. It's about 15 minutes away from UF, which in Gainesville terms, is pretty far. Because it's so far out of the way, I don't really go that often. I'd say Satchels is worth a try if you haven't been before, but it's definitely not a go-to place for me. read more

This pizza dive served the best cooked pizza I've ever had! Cooked crispy but not burnt. The sauce was also very tasty and the toppings were piled on thick! ......and the salad was better than the pizza, homemade dressing tossed with fresh greens, apples, cucumbers, sunflower seeds, walnuts and almonds, just a slight hint of onion...the flavors complemented each other so well. The place is very divey, ultra casual, outside tables, amongst some junky decor, and they have a old VW van outside with tables inside. They make their own soda there at the restaurant! Enchanting and delicious! Loved this kooky, kitschy place to death. They make their own food, soda, and desserts. It's like visiting that weird, hippie relatives house and I damn well love it! You can dine in a van-turned-table, the outside patio, or in the interesting inside. There is so much art to look at here. Tin cans turned into pinwheels, and just a lot to see. They make their own sodas and you can even get a soda flight if you're so inclined. Pizza and house salad were perfections. Tried the thick crust variety and it was sensational! A solid four stars for Satchel's. Parking can be tricky, as the lot for Satchel's itself is very small and narrow. And it's in a college town, so street parking is highly regulated. It can also take a very long time for you to get your food, but they warn you about this on the menu. They also only take cash, which you're advised of at the door. If you're mad that Satchel's is cash only, but you didn't read the sign or the menu, or ask a single person who lives in Gainesville, sorry not sorry. There's an ATM for your convenience. The salads are fresh, the pizza is cooked crispy without being burnt, and... guys... this is my whole reason for patronizing Satchel's as much as I have... THE CANNOLI. This cocoon of sugary delight is magical. I've never had such amazing cannoli filling. Ever since I had Satchel's, no other cannoli can come close. It's a little ways out from people who live by UF, but I wanted to go to say I've been there and OF COURSE you have to sit in the hippie van!!! It seats around 2 parties and its super cute. The pizza is simply delicious and the restaurant itself is pretty interesting. They have a bunch of art throughout and a funky van outside that you can eat inside of. I lived in Gainesville for about 5 years and frequently went to Satchel's Pizza. The quality of ingredients and taste is consistently high. The only thing I am not a fan of is their homemade sodas. They don't sell regular coke products. But it really isn't a big deal. They also have beer and wine. read more

The pizza was really good. We got here and it was packed! So that was a tell tale sign of what was to come with their pizza. The service was not able to be rated as we parked our butts in the bar area to avoid having to wait. They had a blue grass band playing their guitars, banjo and mandolin. I love the unique ambiance at this place. My server explained the menu and recommended the salad which was delicious. She also explained to me that they make they're own soft drinks too. Satchel's is all about simplicity. The only things on the menu are a salad, a calzone, and a pizza. They stick with what they do best and boy do they do it well. They also have such a unique decor and vibe that basically centers around making weird things cool. The pizza is top notch! I like the "Major" which has sausage, pepperoni, peppers, onions, and mushrooms. I'm not a fan of mushrooms so I do without it, but regardless TONS of great flavor on this pizza. The only real downsides are that it is quite pricey for pizza and there can typically be a 30-45 minute wait for your pizza which is understandable, but not ideal if you are really hungry and want some appetizers or some bread in the meantime since none of that is on the menu. Come to satchels expecting to have a simple meal, but one that is extremely well done. They also recently started taking card payments so that is a huge plus. read more

Oh Satchel's, it was over four years ago that I had last visited you, but that changed this past Saturday. Like two long-lost lovers, we were at last reunited. It was time to begin anew, to write our sequel. Cough, excuse me, as you can probably tell not going to Satchel's in so long made me ridiculously nostalgic. Needless to say, when I had the opportunity to revisit my old college grounds, a trip to Satchel's Pizza was a must. It probably didn't help that my coworker and dear friend had gone the week before, so yes, Satchel's you were on my mind for quite some time. Anyway, the place is still as quirky as ever. The blue van is still there, but good luck trying to eat in it. Oh, and the place is still cash only with a $1.50 fee that gets donated to charity. They still have the shop, where I happily purchased a Satchel's coffee mug and three rubber duckies as a happy Gator alum. So now the question is... did the food live up to my memories? HANDS DOWN: YES, YES, YES!!! I had the kindest server. He was bubbly and sweet and his name was Brad. I ordered two ricotta and mozzarella calzones that I am still eating two days later. These calzones are just addicting, to die for, and I'm pretty sure if I haven't already, I will gain some weight, but you know what? Absolutely worth it. I cannot comment on the pizza as I didn't have any this time around, but I do remember liking it, but eh, what can I say? The way to my heart is through my stomach, and well, I must state the obvious. Back in my college days, the calzones stole my heart, and years later, they still have it.
