After searching the area for a possible hotel to stay at (and being disappointed with the results), I chanced upon The Butler House and decided to book the Regatta room for a short stay on their website. Before I arrived, the hosts Jaime and Dan reached out to verify any dietary restrictions and anything they could do to make the stay more comfortable. On the day of my first night, they also checked in on my ETA and gave me instructions for late check in which was very helpful. It's located in a very peaceful and quiet neighborhood. This place was made to feel like a home away from home. It felt like I was visiting a friend's house. The decor was super cozy and well maintained. Everything on the first floor was so pretty to look at, from the foyer, front porch, first floor bathroom, dining room, and front porch. In the foyer, there were snacks, fruits, coffee pods and tea bags. There was also a piano to test your musical skills if you knowhow to play. I enjoyed my time swinging on the front porch's giant swing and feeling the evening breeze as I took in how peaceful the neighborhood was. The rooms were all located on the 2nd floor of the house and come with pin pad locks which was convenient. The Regatta room was huge and also came with a sun room that had two plush couches and white curtains. It felt like the perfect place to curl up with a nice book while sipping on some hot tea. There was also a heating lamp in case it gets cold. The sun room was also the only place with USB chargers which I wish the other outlets inside the bedroom had too. Everything about the room was super clean and well kept! The bathroom was neatly decorated and there was plenty of space inside to layout my skincare bottles. There were also small hand towels, hand soap, body wash, shampoo and conditioner. I really appreciated that they used regular brands like Olay and Pantene (I could tell by the smell because I use them at home too!). In the bathroom there were 4 switches (2 for lights, 1 for bathroom exhaust and the last one turned out to be for hot water which I had to figure out as I'm not used to turning on the heater like that or at all). The pressure of the water was fantastic though it was a bit small inside the shower space. They also had a lovely large bath towel and the bath robe was the cherry on top (I might get one myself). The bed was big enough for me and it was such a nice feeling to sink into a plush and soft bed after a nice hot shower. The TV had access to Disney+ shows which was nice. There was also an AC unit on the wall. I liked that all the room's light switches were right by the bed so that I could make the room as cozy as I wanted it to be. Breakfast was served at 8:30am sharp in the dining room. Tea, apple cider, orange juice and coffee were offered. The first course was Taiwanese scallion pancakes with egg and sausage on the side. It felt like a taste of home for me and an unexpected surprise in Niagara Falls. I would've liked ketchup but there was only sriracha and soy sauce. It was such a large portion I barely had space for the second course. The second course was a giant plate of blueberry crumble with whipped cream. It was quite sweet and most of the table was too full to clear their plates too. They really meant it when they mentioned that guests often don't need to eat lunch after having breakfast here! It definitely fueled me up while I was wandering Goat Island! Butler House has set the bar high in terms of any future bed and breakfast locations I might stay at!

To the left of the entrance is the dining room. It's less of a room and more of a 24/7 hospitality hug. There is a relentless flow of snacks: chips, pretzels, fruit, and candy. The drink selection is equally aggressive in the best way possible (Nespresso, BOTH Pepsi and Coke products, beers, and teas). I spent an embarrassing amount of time just surveying my options. ​The Room (The Grover Cleveland): The room is a great mix of "I'm in a historical landmark" and "Thank God there's a heated bathroom floor." It's well-preserved but doesn't lack the modern essentials. ​The Pros: Mini-fridge, wall-mounted TV with streaming, and a shower with a hand wand (excellent water pressure, too). They even left two pitchers of water for me, one chilled, one room temp. That is the kind of over-preparedness I appreciate. The large windows allow tons of natural light to enter. Wall mounted Aveda shampoo, conditioner, and body wash in the roomy shower. And yes, the bathroom has a wall-console controlled heated floor!! There are two luggage racks, writing desk and two comfy lounge chairs along with the king sized bed. One side has a nightstand with alarm clock abd the other side has a marble shelf on top of an old-style steam heater. There are plenty of plugs around the room and the door has bolt lock with old-style key. ​The Con: My only tiny gripe? The pillows. They were a bit on the "pancake" side of the spectrum, very thin and definitely not fluffy. If you like a firm loft, you might find them lacking. ​The Amenities The fireside library and parlor are perfect for pretending you're reliving the 18th-century lifestyle, and the covered front porch is elite-tier for people-watching. Parking is easy: you can pay for the off-street spot or just roll the dice with the free street parking (which was totally fine). ​The Food & The "Staff" The breakfast spread is legit. We're talking yogurt varieties, hard-boiled eggs, fresh fruit, homemade granola, and homemadr scones that I am still thinking about days later. Seriously, the scones alone are worth the booking. Also, special shout-out to the resident dog who clearly thinks he's the General Manager. He's the friendliest employee on the payroll. ​The location is walkable to a bunch of local shops and restaurants, so you're right in the heart of things. If you want a comfy stay that is affordable and feels historical but isn't "stuffy," this is your place!

One downside for us on this particular stay is the Bar is closed currently as they resold to a different company and there was no information on when it will be reopening so keep in mind if you are planning on staying there anytime in the fall of 2025. You will have to make a short drive to other spots in town! Overall, pleasant stay and would definitely return if we are in the area again.

The first floor is dedicated to the history of the asylum, propaganda about how the asylum treated people better than other asylums did at the time (but I don't believe that at all) and details about what it took to renovate the space to become a hotel. The asylum is but one building in a cluster of at least 10 hospital buildings. All of the rest of them are still abandoned and in disrepair. In terms of walkability to anything nearby and blight immediately surrounding the hotel, it's not the best location. But the architecture and style was so cool to explore late at night when everybody else in the hotel was fast asleep. And yes, this place is pretty pricey to stay at but somehow the day that I checked prices, it was only $118 per night. There are not really many amenities... Rooms don't have a microwave or a fridge, even though the king room we were in had ample space to accommodate both. They also don't have a pool. And although we slept in through breakfast, I've read reviews that it's pretty lackluster. Definitely not a place I would spend $250+ a night to stay in. But if I could find it for less than $150 in the future, I l'd definitely stay there again!

I asked if we could possibly just see the living room since that is where our ceremony took place, and she abruptly told us no. She advised us that there were new owners and that this was not a possibility. It was quite disappointing to know that the wonderful service we have received in the past would not be what would happen going forward.
