We rented kayaks from this shop when another local place didn't have anyone to transport the kayaks to our requested destination. (And no, we have experienced trying to transport and it's not for us!) We walked up and were able to rent some, but there were four of us and they only have 3 singles to rent so someone in our party rented a SUP. They have several tandem kayaks, but only 3 singles, which is odd because they are the only place nearby on the water that does rentals. The employee was great and pulled all of the kayaks to the water and told us more about this section of the lake since we hadn't put in there before. I was interested in returning to dive this lake since it's not that far from me. I don't have a buddy to go at the moment so I thought I might be able to hire a guide from the shop. I sent a message through the web site a couple of days after the season opened. To date, they have not replied to that message. Having had no reply to my Internet inquiry, I decided to call and ask. I was dismayed that they have no diver(s) that I could hire so I could dive. I usually travel to Florida to dive these days as it is usually no problem to hire a guide, or, at least, to find an Instabuddy. I would like to see their shop offer a dive guide for hire. The shop could make money and local divers could get paid to dive. There aren't that many places to dive in West Virginia so I'd like to see this lake get more attention from divers. Regarding their boat, they require at least six divers to charter it. That's reasonable. There needs to be enough divers to make running the boat profitable. I also found it interesting that they feel the need to record their telephone conversations. read more

This operation is closed until Memorial Day but none of their online information makes that clear. We wasted a lot of time because of that seemingly small oversight. Highly recommend going elsewhere. read more

Though google and yelp show the shop open from 9am to 6pm today, it in fact closed for the season a few days ago. My friends and I drove down from Ohio only to discover this was the case upon arrival. I got frustrated. The good news: After I left a crabby voicemail the owner of this shop called me back and then went out of his way to get us all diving. he also gave us a very prorated discount. The water conditions were decent and ultimately the service turned out to be a pleasant surprise. This was my third time doing business with Sarge's Dive Shop this year. Highly recommend. read more

I'll say up front that I haven't spent enough time here to do this place justice, but the Summersville Lake mixed with the convenience of Sarge's Dive Shop is a vacation destination for sure. The lake itself is absolutely gorgeous. Water is warm and as crystal clear as you're going to find inland in this country. Sarge's gets you out on that lake in a number of ways, and they do it for pretty cheap. Paddle boards, kayaks, pontoon boats, and scuba lessons to name a few options, starting as low as $15/hr for a rental. We did two hours worth of paddle boarding. It was a little rainy, but it was still a lot of fun, yet very relaxing. The lake is enormous and you can really see a ton in two hours or more. Like I said, I don't know it well enough to really get into more specifics, but If you have an afternoon in the area, this would probably be the most productive way to spend it. We called on Monday to book the dinner cruise for any night during the week. We were told that they needed a minimum of 8 reservations to go out. I was called on Wednesday and told they didn't have any other inquiries, but would call back if they did. Thursday I received a call that they did have a few other inquiries for Friday night. Hurrah ! Friday, I received a call ... that they indeed had sufficient reservations to go out ....BUT the captain had something else he had to do so we wouldn't be going out ..
