I'd say this place is worth the fanfare. I don't know if I'd always line up for an hour here, but I'd do it if it was a short line. Sargent Sundae is an ice cream institution, having been open since 1984. Its location across from Assiniboine Park means long lineups are common, especially on weekends and holidays. I personally believe you go to these places for hard ice cream over soft ice cream. If you want soft ice cream, go to BDI or McDonald's, where they specialize in them. I had the brownies and fudge ice cream, which was extremely rich! A single scoop actually filled me up, and there were plenty chunks of brownies and fudge inside. Prices are reasonable here compared to other ice cream places, and this is despite the fanfare it gets. However it's cash or debit only! read more

I don't know how else to say it - Sargent Sundae is an absolute icon of Winnipeg's summers. The long wait times and lines are absolutely worth it for this place. from what I remember in past outings here, their hard ice cream and milkshakes are both excellent. Just recently, I had their strawberry sundae when I came here and it was absolutely delicious. The portions they provide are also quite large. A pretty good deal for the prices they charge! It was well worth the trip here with my friend. Do however keep in mind that this place does not take credit card - only debit or cash. Also, there is very little space to eat-in. I used to come here all the time when I lived near Winnipeg and I'm very happy to see that this place is still as amazing as I remember it. Will I be back? I tried their unique flavor called "Very cherry cheesecake" and "cookie dough" ice cream. Two scoops, one of each flavor in a waffle cone and it was yummy! The cookie dough flavor has chunks of cookie dough in it, soft and chunky. And the very cherry cheesecake is just the right blend of cheesy and cherry. I usually don't like cherry flavor things but this was great tasting. It was busy in there when I stopped in but the staff were doing a good job of being polite even though they seemed a bit tired. read more

The only reason I take a star out is because of the crazy long line-ups and the fact they don't take debit or credit so you must always take cash with you when visiting one of the best places to get ice-cream in Winnipeg. I could give a minor complaint to how they're closed in the winter, but I could see how people don't want to have ice-cream in the coldest city in Canada -- but also the hottest when it comes to the summer. Another one of those Winnipeg institutions - we all remember Sargent Sundae from our childhood. It's situated in a great location, just over the walking bridge from Assiniboine Park. A lovely stop after a fun day at the park, especially if it's a hot day. There's lots of outdoor seating around and the shop with lots of seating in the shade. It's a busy spot when the temps are high so waits can be long - but it's worth it. I love that they have kid sized sundaes - it was the perfect size for my niece. The kid size strawberry sundae had tons of fresh strawberries in there and at about $2, it was a great price too! I really enjoyed the cookies and cream hard ice cream. The cookies in there tasted like the soft cookie base to an ice cream sandwich - love that! The ice cream tasted really rich and decadent so one scoop is more than enough for me. I always make a point to come here at least once a year, it is hands down one of my favourite ice cream places in town. Sargent Sundae is known for their hard ice cream but they do have a great selection of soft ice cream too! It's nice that this place has a dedicated following, and the people who work there are super nice. However, I asked to read the ingredients list and was shocked to see ingredients like modified milk ingredients, diglycerides, palm kernel oil, colour, etc. Why is it acceptable to serve consumers "ice cream" that is nothing more than a scoop of stabilizers and preservatives? In Sargent Sundae's defence, they never actually say their ice cream is 'all natural', and a lot of people seem to like it. I just personally prefer not to eat a scoopful of chemicals and preservatives with my pralines and cream! read more

I really want to give this place 5 stars because I absolutely love their ice cream and always looked forward to a trip there but lately I've had to get past the bad service. I'm always happy when I go there because well I'm getting ice cream who wouldn't be happy?! A couple of their employees in particular though are generally rude and grumpy and it really puts a damper on the experience. No hello no thank you no smiles. It's to the point where I've chosen to go to other ice cream places when this used to be my go to. I get if someone is having a bad day but I've been there several times now and seen the same thing.
