I spent five days in Manila last month, and one of the highlights of the trip was a tour of Sarao Motors, which we took on our way in from the airport. Sarao is a family company, established in 1953 by Leonardo Sarao. Our guide was LJ Sarao, who I believe is the founder's grandson. He was kind enough to take us around the factory grounds.
Sarao Motors manufactures jeepneys, a uniquely Filipino form of transportation somewhere between a Jeep and a bus. You'll see several of them if you drive in Manila for five minutes. Filipinos seem to take national pride in the invention, and you can buy jeepney souvenirs in just about any tourist-facing gift shop.
The company was larger in its heyday, but it's still an active factory, producing jeepneys for various uses, including custom jobs for collectors. LJ showed us several of the jeepneys in progress, and they were super cool, really unique and colorful. Sarao Motors makes everything the old-fashioned way, even hammering out chassis by hand. The machines I saw were sturdy and ancient, used for small tasks they've been doing for decades.
This was a fun introduction to Filipino and jeepney culture, and I'm grateful to LJ for inviting us into his family factory. If you're in Manila, Sarao Motors is open to tourists, and it's definitely worth checking out. I doubt I'll see anything else quite like it ever again. read more
