I went with medium to hard pressure because momma needed the tension release. You basically undress because you're about to get oiled up and the masseuse will walk up and down your backside while holding onto the poles secured on the ceiling. I was hurting so good from the pressure she gave me. It was almost like I was getting a lymphatic massage as well as releasing muscle tensions. I got some dabs of tiger balm at the end which gave a cooling effect. I definitely want to try the cupping therapy as well next time. I'm a firm believer that touch can cure many aches and pains. Let's just say that we enjoy Northern Thai as much as some of the massages we've had in Thailand. There are 4 options for massages - Thai massage which is stretching + massaging with no oil, Swedish which is a relaxing oil massage, Thai-Swedish a mix of the two, and Swedish deep tissue with oil and lots of elbow/forearm for pressure. At this point, I've had them all and highly recommend for starters the combination Thai-Swedish which is a nice mixture of assisted stretching into yoga-like poses with relaxing kneading/gliding of Swedish massage. The masseuses, though tiny in stature, pack a lot of strength and are able to expertly navigate the tight spots that need the most attention. One nice bonus is that they also have heated massage table pads which felt extremely nice during this cold winter afternoon. Be sure to call ahead for an appointment. I've hardly had issues getting a same day appointment. The only negative about Northern Thai is that they have noisy barber shop neighbors, so I recommend ear buds or plugs so that you can really enjoy the massage in peace.
