A GEM After dining nearby, our group of four women wanted to get foot massages. One of us is fluent in Chinese, so she called the place we went to once. Unfortunately, they were booked. I searched Yelp and found this spot, which was literally down the street from where we ate. When we called, they said they would accommodate us, so we headed their immediately. Yes, it looks cheesy from the outside, but that's the way they are. When we arrived, there was a bit of confusion, but after I mentioned we had just spoken to someone on the phone, they led us into the inner sanctum where we each chose a bed for our 15 minute Shoulder + Back + 45 minute Foot Massage ($40). Speaking Chinese probably helped. The room was low lit, which made it very relaxing, but the glow from the muted TV on the wall bothered me enough to put a blanket over my eye lids. Next time, I'll bring an eye mask. Soft music enhanced the ambience. I wish I had asked my masseuse what his name was because he was amazing! He made my feet feel awesome. The shoulder and back massage touched on some painful points, but I could tell my chi was flowing. We each tipped $10 and paid for our treatments when they were done. I'm not sure if they accept credit cards since I used cash. I thought I was the only one who wanted to cry out a few times when he worked on my back, but my friends laughed when we were in the car and said they did, too. Still, we all agreed this was great. I initially learned of this spa on a bridal shower weekend 15 years ago. After a great meal in Monrovia we went to have foot massages with brand new flip flops in tow. What a great massage it was! And I've been coming ever since. I've brought several people young & elderly to experience their professional work. I haven't received the hot tea afterwards in a long time like it use to be. But who knows, maybe it will return that was a nice treat after a relaxing massage. The staff is really nice and courteous. This was my second time going to this spa but I'm not coming back again. The first time I tried this place was okay, so I gave the benefit of the doubt. However, this is my second try and they did not give me good service. I had called earlier for an appointment, and upon my arrival they were saying that they didn't had that appointment scheduled. Their demeanor was like if they didn't want to give me service at the actual appointment time I had requested, so I told them I would go somewhere else then-immediately they said ok we're going to treat you. Also, they charged me upfront first before starting the foot massage, which was strange to me because the first time I came they charged me after the service. Anyhow, even though I did get my foot massage, it was not that good either. So I'm not planning to come here again. 2 stars cause I used to like it here enough to come back few times a year. Otherwise this would definately be 1 star. Today's visit made me mad enough to actually not come back anymore. I made a phone appointment to come in at 3:45pm, Tina calls me back and asks me to come earlier in which I replied I cannot as I'm not off work yet. Then she asks me to come after 4:20 in which I said I still can't cause I have other obligations around 5pm so I literally only can come in somewhere between 3:45-4pm for a 60 minute massage. So at that point she could have told me sorry we don't have time. But she didn't, she told me to come anyways, so I went. I get there at my appointment time to hear her calling on the phone looking for people to help me. I wanted to ask her if there's anyone, if not then I'll just leave. Then she ends up deciding to help me herself which I thought was weird cause she said she had someone coming at 4.... so what ends up happening is she massages me for 5 minutes and then tells me her appt is here and the next person will help me in another "5" minutes. At that point I can't say no... so if coarse I said ok. 15 minutes later the next lady finally comes in and it was already 4:20... exactly the time when Tina called me back initially to ask me to come in timeframe. Now I look at the new lady and ask how are you guys going to charge as I got massaged for 5 minutes, then waited another 15 minutes before you got here. Next lady was nice enough to return my waiting time to me but in general the whole massage was very upsetting as I felt like I was tricked to come in and now had 2 masseuse, was in an awkward situation, layed there for 15 minutesin between just waiting around for nothing, and have to rush to my next destination after the massage to not be late. When the massage finished, I paid, tipped, and rushed to leave. But that was such an uncomfortable and unrelaxing massage from all the mental stress and waiting around, it was not worth. I rushed to the next place and somehow ended up pulling a neck muscle when I got there definately due to an uncomfortable massage and stress. (I honestly think it was from me lying on my belly for about 1 hour total waiting for massage and then getting the massage... and due to the awkward timing and different people of the massage, I never even got a neck or head massage, the transition was also horrible) Overall, I feel that they could have been honest and said they didn't have time. (Doesn't make sense to switch masseuse) people understand if you're booked...... But I felt that they tricked me to come in even though they didn't have time, had me wait regardless, and left me in such an uncomfortable and awkward position and mindset that I did not enjoy my massage one bit. A few of us came here because they had a lot of last minute openings available. Foot massage was nothing to write home about, and when they tried to massage my head, it was really hard and it hurt. They demanded a 40% tip when we paid, were very aggressive about it, and made us all feel extremely uncomfortable. We ended up giving it to them because it was a very awkward situation and we did not want to be confrontational. We felt like we were being extorted. Not sure if this is normal for these types of places, but we've never encountered anything like that before. That is not professional, and you should not be doing that if you want long term or returning customers. So, of course we won't be coming back, and def would not recommend to anyone else. My boyfriend and I had been here once before and came away with a great experience, so we thought it could become our regular massage place. We called in for any available appointments and were told to come around 8pm. Upon our arrival, we chose to get 90-minute foot and body combo massages and were taken in immediately for our foot massages, which turned out to be good overall. However, I noticed that my boyfriend's therapist seemed new and inexperienced, since she kept asking questions to my therapist in Mandarin. When we switched into a private room for our body massages, it got even more unprofessional. She kept asking about the time they could clock out, whether she should have cooled down the hot stones with water first, and generally what to do during the massage like how many strokes to use and when to add massage oil. For this part of the massage, my own therapist felt like she was just repeating movements on my back because she was trying to kill time and didn't do much to my legs, and we didn't get any massage to the front of our body like we did last time. On top of that, the transition to finishing was horrible and my boyfriend's therapist ended it by asking "we're off soon right? but I haven't done xyz yet." My therapist responded with, "do it quickly...you're so troublesome." I later asked my boyfriend how the massage ended for him, since he doesn't understand Mandarin, and he said it felt really random. If you and your staff are not prepared to provide an adequate and professional experience, then don't accept our appointments! It just makes it uncomfortable and unpleasant for both sides. I thought it was generous to leave a 23% tip for a rotten experience from unprofessional staff, but my therapist seemed unhappy when she rung me up and as we were leaving, she called us back and demanded that we tip at least 30% for giving us 90 minute massages. I'm embarrassed and angry to say that I ended up giving it to them, because what I actually should've done was tell them what I heard throughout the 90 minutes they thought I didn't understand Mandarin. Afterwards, I gave my masseuse a 10% tip (which I thought was already generous for a mediocre massage and less time that was agreed upon) and the lady literally laughed in my face and said that I must be new. I came to this spa under the current new membership. The new owner, Jenny is very approachable and willing to help. She keeps the spa very nice with great and relaxing ambience. I noticed that the facility is very clean and all of the rooms have clean towels. I had Linda for massage. She is really wonderful. She'd listen to what I told her about my knots and problem areas. Her strokes are firm and after her massage, all my aches and pain are melted away. I also tried Jenny's massage at one occasion as Linda was busy. Jenny's massage is also exceptional. She's able to feel all my knots and her pressure and strokes are just right to ease all the pain. If the knots are particularly stubborn, she applies Bengay to relax the muscle. Okay, mixed review coming! They booked us same day, which was great. Of course, whatever you find in this neighborhood is probably comparable in terms of service, quality, price, etc. My massage person was SO STRONG. Oh my word, the strongest massage I've ever had in my life. It hurt but it felt amazing. Everything I would want in a massage! But the next few days I had quite a bit of muscle soreness, so honestly it was probably too much, and I kind of regretted it after. My husband was there with me and his massage person was much much weaker. He had pain in his lower back pretty much right after the massage and for the rest of the day. I've had enough massages in my life to know that pain is not normal, so definitely something to consider.. The workers don't speak too much English. Well I have mixed reviews my first massage was with amazing the best massage ever I tipped her $20 well worth it! The next day I called for appointment with Amy 4 pm appointment when I get there lady says Amy don't work today I said I called and you said yes! She said I'll give you massage ! I've been visiting Sapphire Spa for over a year and have been consistently pleased. The place is immaculately clean, quiet and peaceful. I go for 90 minute, full body massages. The masseuses speak limited English, but enough to get the job done. They always ask if the massage is okay, and are always willing to adjust pressure or work on particular areas that have been giving me pain, such as my knees, hips or stress area between the shoulder blades.
