This was unfortunately my second frustrating experience with Hale Ho'ōla. The first was in September 2022, when Suzanne left me hanging for three days before eventually telling me she couldn't accommodate a couples massage. I decided to give Hale Ho'ōla another chance this year. On September 1, I arranged a couples massage for September 15 to celebrate my wedding anniversary with my husband. Suzanne told me she had availability from 4-8pm, I selected 4pm, and provided my email address as requested. On the morning of our appointment, I realized I'd never received the confirmation email or any instructions, so at 9:54am I texted Suzanne to make sure we were still on for 4pm. She read my message but didn't respond. Around 2pm, as we were preparing for the 2+ hour drive from Kona, I followed up again. She read that message too, but again didn't respond. Suzanne finally called around 2:30pm, after we had already been driving for about 30 minutes. She explained that she'd been dealing with power outages over the previous few days, which I completely understand. However, she also admitted that she had forgotten to put our appointment on her schedule and couldn't see us until after 7pm. I asked whether the following day would work better for her. She said yes it would, but needed to confirm with her other therapist and would get back to me. She never did. I followed up again that evening, which she read without responding. It wasn't until around 4:30pm the following day that she finally texted to say she couldn't make it work. Mistakes and unexpected circumstances happen. What I find unacceptable is the repeated lack of communication. Had Suzanne responded to either of my messages, we never would have started a 2+ hour drive for an appointment that wasn't actually on her schedule. What makes this especially disappointing is that we had specifically planned this couples massage as part of our wedding anniversary celebration. Her lack of communication and organization threw a wrench into our plans and wasted precious vacation time that we can't get back. Instead of enjoying that time together, we spent it driving toward an appointment that didn't exist and then waiting around the following day to find out whether she could accommodate us. As a small business owner myself, I understand that running a business isn't easy. But communicating with customers and honoring confirmed arrangements -- or promptly taking responsibility when something goes wrong -- is basic professionalism.

Anyway, I was warmly greeted by Maria at the entrance of her studio. When I stepped into the massage room was I was immediately impressed by its spaciousness, tranquility, soothing music, and the relaxing aroma of lavender and sandlewood. As I lay on the massage table face down, I also noticed the Maria had placed other relaxing aromatherapy oils on the part of the massage table that held me face. To make a long story short, the 90 minute massage I received was "outstanding." She provided me with a Swedish Massage combined with Deep Tissue in the specific areas I requested. The massage also included stretches which tested and expanded my range of motion. Overally the massage was both relaxing and therapeutic. I left with a deep sense of calm and serenity, and I can honestly say that I had the best nights sleep that I have had in weeks! As an added bonus, Maria later emailed me with feedback on my range of motion, and the degree and location of any tightness in my muscles. She recommended regular stretching to improve the problem areas she spotted. I would highly recommend Maria's services. I have been to massage therapists around the world including in Europe and Asia and there is no doubt in my mind that she is an expert at her craft. If that isnt' enough, her rates are extemely reasonable even for a mediocre massage therapist---which she is not!

I'm new to the area, and was pretty bummed to leave a great team of integrative medicine folks in…read morethe SF Bay Area. After 3+decades of pretty intense athletic adventures, I originally called Heather for help with some niggling physical stuff (plantar fasciitis, hamstring tendinitis, a grumpy shoulder) and also some deeper, systemic stuff I was experiencing (which later turned out to be a thyroid and adrenal issue.) I have experience with several different types of Accupuncture- and on our first call Heather let me know that her method might be different from what I was used to. She emphasized that she uses a subtle, systemic rebalancing approach - and that while we would work on my specific issues, it might be a different process than I was used to. The truth is, I've never found two practitioners to be the same, and part of what I find so effective about accupuncture is that each practitioner has a framework that speaks to their own experience and their energy- at best it's a partnership where their methods, training and energy meet my present circumstances and behaviors, and the healing happens somewhere in the middle. That's what I've found here. In my life, accupuncture with heather is an important part of what I'm doing to feel better - in addition to working with a naturopathic doc and doing physio. Bodies take maintenance- we live in them every day- and working with Heather has helped not just the acute physical injuries, but also feels like it's gradually helping restore some of the general sense of wellness I've been lacking. I really love that Heather offers in-home treatment. Facing health challenges is an incredibly vulnerable, emotional process - and I couldn't have a better partner in what is definitely a journey toward feeling like myself again. Heather holds space for not just the physical healing, but also creates a safe container for talking thru - and feeling - the more emotional side of the process. Her vast technical expertise is matched her kindness. I'm grateful to Heather (and Yelp!) for walking with me thru what has been a wildly challenging wellness year.
