I was quoted $514 to install 4 very simple window blinds and a bathroom towel rack. The tasks took just a bit over an hour to complete. The cost should have been, at the very most, $150. If I had not been home alone with the handyman inside my house, I would have rejected the quote. Instead, I allowed him and the company to gouge me, a senior citizen. Steer clear of this company and its shameful predatory tactics.

How Many Mr. Handymen Does It Take to Change a Lightbulb? *…read moreA small patch (less than a foot square) of wallpaper near my stairway needed to be replaced with a carefully-matched piece from spare paper that I had retained for many years. Kirk at Mr. Handyman had done a similar job a while back, and I decided to ask for him to do the job again. Because I am a bit lazy, I also bundled three other relatively small tasks with the job, which was probably a mistake in retrospect: replacing an inconveniently-located smoke detector, patching a small hole in a living room wall, and replacing burned-out, motion-sensitive security lights around the perimeter of my house (five sets of two lights each.) When Kirk came on October 22nd, I explained each of the tasks; we examined the various areas needing work, and he provided me with an estimate of $842, which I thought was very high. However, being lazy, I decided to go along with it just to get these jobs done and off my to-do list. Kirk told me that he would probably need a second worker to hold the ladder on some of the lights. I offered to hold the ladder for him, but he told me that it would be impossible due to company policy. Kirk generated the estimate on his tablet computer; I approved it and just assumed that he had sent a copy to my email. That was my second mistake. Kirk did an excellent job on the wallpaper and completed similarly well-done work on the wall and the smoke detector. All the work took no more than an hour or so. What I thought to be the simplest task, the light replacement was the exception. Kirk, who has a competent, truthful, and trustworthy appearance, told me that he had replaced both lights on one light set and one light on another (which now will not turn off), but that the second one needed to be checked-out further. He said that the remaining three sets would require a second worker and that he would return to complete the remaining work. He asked me to pay in full for the four tasks and said that he would take care of the unfinished work. I paid for the work and assumed that I would be receiving the invoice that I had signed on his tablet computer. That was my third mistake: I have received neither an invoice nor a written estimate. I took Kirk at his work and expected to be notified when he would return to finish the work. Much to my surprise, my wife received an email estimate the next morning from Mr. Handyman for $1,098.00 to finish the work which I had already paid for. The sheer creativity and hilarious ridiculousness of this estimate is a museum piece of incompetence and "hate your customer" corporate strategy. See the attached estimate for your amusement. I assumed that this was some silly mistake, and that was my fourth mistake. I called Kirk at the number on his business card to ask him about this seeming misunderstanding . A rather unpleasant lady answered the telephone and told me that they did not let their workers make calls out but that she would answer my questions. I explained the situation to her, and she told me that she herself had made the estimate and that I could like it or lump it. So, they want more than another one-thousand dollars for probably a half-hour's work to screw in a few lightbulbs and to check out a sensor. Wow!! Amazing!! Kirk does excellent work, and I believe that he is also diligent and honest. However, I will certainly never do business with these people again. If anyone happens to read this: You have now been warned. * The Lightbulb Joke has been around for decades, humorously targets various groups, and has any number of right answers. The most common answer is: "Three -- one to hold the light bulb and two to turn around the ladder."
