My go-to order is the garlic shrimp appetizer with the grilled veggies of the day, and honestly it's the perfect meal every time. The sangria and specialty cocktails are also great and pair perfectly with the relaxed vibe. I especially love sitting outside along Esplanade Avenue--such a beautiful spot to unwind and enjoy the neighborhood atmosphere - especially when the Nola weather cooperates. Ohhh... where to start??? This has always been (and hopefully always will be) one of my favorite restaurants in New Orleans. Back in the day, Santa Fe was on Frenchman in the Marigny, and it was the top player in the city as far as Mexican food went. Then it closed (boo-hoooo ). Santa Fe eventually reopened in its current location on Esplanade, which makes this a much more accessible place for a Lakeview girl! AND It's divine!!! There is no wrong selection here! Everything on the menu is delicious. I love the Tableside Guacamole and their Ceviche is the best ever!!! The seafood dishes are mouth watering, and so are their more traditional appetizers and entrees. OMG... the tamales!!! I do recommend that you tread carefully through their drink menu. The bartenders are some of the best in the city, and those drinks will sneak in and strait mess you up without warning... not in a polite, delicate way, more like in a wake-up-the-next-morning-in-your neighbor's-Christmas-manger-scene kind of way (I did not do that, but that's where I found my friend at 6AM. (Like Molto Mario) It is illegal to smoke within 25 ft of an entrance and with (3) women holding (not even smoking) nasty cigarettes like the Statue of Liberty I felt sick. The wind was blowing their smoke for 20ft into this plastic corralled patio. That's like if I go upwind and light 5 cigars- I could empty that patio. Take heed. Oh the food. Aside from the cigarettes, We got moved next to a cleaning station. I was so terrified of my pet peeve (spraying the table and 1/2 the restaurant) I took the bottle of sanitizer with the dirty rags all over it and put it where it belongs (In a bathroom closet) Aside from all of the challenges, the food was "ok" It's $3 for a bowl of salsa that comes with the cold chips (at least put then in the microwave for 10 seconds) I don't think it was worth having to wait an hour for food and the Margaritas are $9 for about 10 oz. I have been a patron of Santa Fe restaurant since I moved to New Orleans in 2014. They're happy hour margaritas are as far as I'm concerned the best in the city.! also it's a very nice touch that there are complementary chips and salsa and the salsa is quite good. My friend and I frequently go there for happy hour and a light dinner. In the past, I have raved about their wonderful beet salad and the spicy chicken wings. Elaine always ops for their taco salad, but instead of the shredded chicken pays the charge for the grilled chicken breast. I have no problem with the up charge especially with the cost of food these days but what is irritating is that the salad is priced to include the shredded chicken, which is chicken thighs (dark meat). The upcharge is nine dollars. But nothing is taken off of the price of the taco salad when you're not getting the shredded chicken. So in fact, you're still being charged for the shredded chicken in addition to the chicken breast. But you don't get the shredded chicken. You only get the chicken breast. The taco salad is 17 or $18 to begin with. But with the nine dollar surcharge for swapping the dark meat for the white meat... now we're at $27 for a taco salad!!! that's outrageous!! the last time we were there I ordered the garlic shrimp appetizer. I don't know how I could've been any more disappointed. The shrimp was obviously not fresh but frozen. It was overcooked and flavorless the sauce, which was supposed to be a lemon garlic butter flavor...It was flavorless, thin, and watery... not a sauce at all! It tasted like water that has been sprinkled with parsley. All that being said, the host was a very nice gentleman very nice young man who talked with us and we shared pictures of our dogs and he was just very very nice young man. I can't say the same thing for our server. When my friend asked for an extra napkin, she made a snide remark about cost of napkins! When we were discussing how to split the bill she offered to bring separate checks, but felt it necessary to say "all you had to do was ask".. I don't care for flippant remarks from servers or anyone for that matter. To be clear, I always tip at least 20% or more. I'm not going back to Santa Fe for a while and when I do go back, I'll only have the margarita and chips. I don't think I'll ever order food there again. It was a different take on the dish. The tomatoes had remoulade sauce drizzled on top and it was over a bed of green with grilled shrimp. It was so very good. I thoroughly enjoyed my meal. Was visiting from NYC for Jazz Fest and my local friend, who's a regular at Santa Fe (I'm talking twice-a-week, lives-in-the-neighborhood regular) was so excited to bring me there. She even made a reservation ahead of time (and had the confirmation email to prove it), but when we called to confirm, they said they don't take any reservations during Jazz Fest... so the one we already had? "Not valid." Given that our reservation no longer mattered, we decided to leave the fest early and arrive at 6:30 to beat the rush. We got seated at a crummy table between parked cars and the sidewalk, but rolled with it. We were happy to be there. Ordered margaritas and apps. Then it started pouring. We asked to move to one of the many empty covered patio tables and were told no--they were reserved. So I guess they do take reservations during the fest??? When we explained we were already customers and just needed to relocate to stay dry and order dinner, the owner told us we'd overstayed our welcome and should leave. It was shocking. Our friend, who eats there all the time, was boldly asked to leave because we didn't want to order dinner in the pouring rain. The server was visibly embarrassed and quietly told us these kinds of things happen all the time. So, TLDR: food's decent, drinks are great, servers are working very hard despite what I can only imagine is a toxic management situation. But treating regulars and visitors like that, especially during one of the city's biggest weekends, leaves a bad taste. Santa Fe, do better. read more

I've been eating at Santa Fe for about 10 years. I used to come here with my ex for a bottle of wine late at night, and the owners knew us and would cater to us. It was pretty divine. After I realized what an asshole that ex was and we broke up, I had to avoid the restaurant for a while. When I resumed my visits, I was glad to be back. The food is good depending on the dish. I have had a few average meals. I love sitting outdoors when the weather permits. On weekends, they often have live jazz outside. My only suggestion for improvement would be to hire friendlier servers. Another consistent over 10 years has been the rude, frazzled, and impatient servers. The chips, salsa and guacamole is top notch I think is the best around. My wife always orders the empanadas, but I always tend to get something different. COVID-19 update: So this is one of those times where I wish Yelp would give half stars bc I would put this place at a solid 3.5 stars. What pushed it to 4 stars is that the staff here are really amazing and my Chicken and mushroom quesadilla was tasty and huge! Plus the owner is always super nice. Now keep in mind that I always bring leftovers home and eat multiple meals a day! :) as another reviewer said their queso is a bit thick. One of my gf's was a little surprised by that but it didn't stop us from devouring pretty much all of it as well as 3-4 servings of tortilla chips! My other gf had the taco salad and seemed to enjoy it. I also ordered a side of black beans and rice (I kinda wish they had refried beans bc that's my go to side with my quesadilla). We also shared a decanter of sangria which we all decided was ok, strong but not the best we had. And I have to qualify that by saying the best sangria I've had in the city is across the street at Lola's and it has fruit that comes with it. It's tasty and deceptively good that you don't realize how much you've drunk til it hits you later! Haha ;) I digress, I appreciate that they were taking Covid-19 restrictions seriously, all the waiters were wearing masks when they came to our outdoor table. I appreciated that all the waiters (not just our own particular waiter) came to clear our table, bring our food etc., it's nice to see their teamwork atmosphere! So, I've never had bad food here. In fact, the food has always been very good. We ate there for brunch today, and my steak and eggs, my GF's huevos rancheros were delicious, and her mom's seafood omelette was great. But...the service. The service on some visits has been fine. Today, on the other hand, our server walked past my empty water glass no less than 4 times, at least once to take water to the table just across from us, and nothing. The first time or two, I thought she saw my glass, and I assumed she would be coming right back. She didn't. Nor did she ever bring the salt my GF asked for when the food first arrived. She actually wanted the salt, ya know, for the meal. Not after the meal. But it never arrived anyhow. So cool how restaurants don't need to put S&P on tables anymore. On another trip brunch trip here, quite a while ago, we were seated, then two more people were seated near us. We then sat for quite a while, literally feeling invisible, as we watched a server tend to the other two tables without ever acknowledging us. I'm pretty sure that was the same person who served us today. Again, we felt ignored. Maybe brunch is not her best shift. On that trip, after 15 minutes of invisibility, we just got up and left. Unnoticed, apparently. In all fairness, when we've been for dinner, our service is usually fine - not noteworthy. And we do always enjoy the food. But two trips with bad to no service brings the rating down quite a bit. Oh, and today, the "musicians" playing out front...sorry. Rather than rudely describing the sound, I'll just say we were barely far enough from them to almost be able to ignore them. Beautiful day, nice patio seating, odd noise coming from the sidewalk. This was one of those days when good fortune smiled down on us, because Santa Fe is an absolute gem. An "insiders" trick that we learned is that they have an off-menu curried mussel dish that ranks as one of the ten most delicious things we've ever eaten.
