[2/100] What a contrast from every other Arts District I've visited in various cities. This one is literally a neighborhood filled with art galleries, a coffee shop and a brewery. I had a couple hours to spare before my drive up to Colorado Springs and Arts Districts are usually always fun, this one was a little deserted. Almost all the art galleries were closed, except for one but it was small and the owner was a little strict. I walked the entire strip and there are dope mural art that is in plain sight. There are a lot more in the alleyways behind certain galleries and shops. Parking was plenty since the area was dead. There were plenty that weren't metered. The one coffee shop I stumbled upon (mmm coffee) is located inside a building hosting other businesses. Maybe it is because the Arts District here in LA set the standards but I wasn't impressed. There was no life to this area. Pros: - Really dope art scattered around - Free 2 hour parking - Close to downtown Cons: - Not a lot to do - Most of the art galleries are closed - The neighborhood around seems sketchy I may have gone on an off day and maybe this place really does come alive on the Fridays of the Art Walk but I didn't get that opportunity. I have friends that live in Denver, I may get another chance to experience a different Arts District next time.

The Santa Fe Arts District is located before the main part of Denver and comes alive every "First Friday's" of each month. Jammed packed with lots of food trucks and live entertainers. They don't have a lot of restaurants and the ones they do have get packed early, you will need to make reservations ahead of time. Or if you're like me, I grab and go see some art with some major drinking along the way. I recommend you checking out the Santa Fe if you want a more intimate Colorado experience with one-on-one meets with the Artists. This Art District says it's in Denver but, Downtown Lodo or Larimer is pretty far of you're walking. By 8pm the streets become extremely packed and hard to walk because it's a pretty small old town. There are a few large warehouses full of studio suites, so don't miss these unique intimate shops. I can't wait for December to do most of my holiday shopping. Cons: The location is not near downtown Denver. During the rest of the week most of the studios are closed and the food trucks and musicians aren't there.

For that moment in my personal history, I always take the opportunity to swing through whenever I find myself down that direction for any reason. The gallery that was has long since changed hands a couple of times, yet always attracts some good shows. Over the last several months, I have found myself back at this place twice now as a destination. I haven't done that once for this gallery space in over a decade. Artist-owned and operated as a co-op in this iteration, it seems someone was taking notes. The main showroom is still in the front, with the full windows facing the intersection. There are still private, working studio spaces in the back, but the layout has been shuffled a bit. From the outside, the changes are subtle. They have fixed, open hours from Thursday through Sunday, which is a standout in comparison to other galleries in the area. What was the backdoor entrance and an empty corridor is now utilized as functional space for a satellite gallery. The main gallery and this secondary gallery have representation from co-op members. The range of work offers a wide variety of media and artistic voices. There's a smaller "featured" type gallery off the main gallery, which rotates solo shows. All in all, they've really gotten all they can out of the space, tastefully. So, if you're looking for a place that's not the cramped and crazy of First Friday, get on their mailing list or check their calendar when you're planning a night out. After all, this is the place D'ART.
