We were in Sweet Home, Oregon on the hunt for historic Oregon covered bridges and came upon Sankey Park. The almost seventeen acre city park is tucked away in a small neighborhood near downtown Sweet Home. There are many mature fir trees and grassy areas perfect for picnicking and just relaxing in the shade. There is a newer kids playground structure, a clubhouse, gazebo, picnic tables, a BMX course, restrooms, a Riparian Restoration Area and of course the historic Weddle Covered Bridge we came to see. The gazebo, as well as the Bridge itself, is available for public and community events and would be a very pretty setting for a small wedding or birthday party. The annual country music festival known as "The Oregon Jamboree" is held in in the park every August. There is ample parking and is handicapped accessible.
The Weddle Covered Bridge was originally built over Thomas Creek in Scio, Oregon, but was moved to it's current site in 1989 and became the first covered bridge project to receive grants under the Oregon Covered Bridge Program which helped fund covered bridge maintenance and rehabilitation projects throughout the state of Oregon. The Weddle Covered Bridge is 120-feet long, with open sides, features exposed trusses and rounded portals and is made entirely out of wood, like yellow pine, redwood and Douglas fir. It's also listed on the US National Register of Historic Places.
