Besides the refectory, at the Queensland University of Technolgy (QUT) Kelvin Grove Campus, Beadles…read moreis the only place where you can get a decent coffee and light meal. During semester, the coffee line up and wait can be a bit testing, especially if you're pressed for time. For most underpaid and under fed people on campus, that are time poor and are in a constant rush, Beadles offers a cabinet display with a decent selection of healthy, yet, standard sandwiches and wraps. If you want to sit for a meal, I recommend you don't. During semester, Beadles is pumped, the seating area is usually full of faculty and students having meetings or doing some urgently needed work. It can get noisy in there and because of its open design can get pretty cold in winter and very muggy in summer. Pricewise Beadles is pretty good, the majority of meals before lunch are under $10 and after start at around $12. I recommend the Beadle's chickpea and lentil burger. It's really filling and probably the healthiest thing on the menu. The best time to go is when semester is over and the feeling of over stressed university students and lecturers doesn't fill the air.

I would agree with Michelle on this one; Beadles sure know how to make fries and aioli. Honestly, I…read moredid not visit this cafe often but I remember thinking they made good coffee and fries. There were somethings I did not like about it, one of them being their rude "ONLY FOR PAYING CUSTOMERS" signage dispersed everywhere, it was not welcoming and always made me want to get takeaway. Rant aside, Beadles is just a conveniently placed cafe, it gets pretty busy at times and I can sort of understand why the owner felt the need to put those signs up. The food at Beadles is a lot more appetising than the food at the refectory (which serves the worst food on campus). I remember liking the coffee from here quite a lot, I would often get my takeaway coffees from here.Service is usually pretty quick considering how busy the place gets too. Ultimately, Beadles is just a cafe; not a bad cafe but not a great cafe either. The fries are pretty good though so if you do pay this cafe a visit, make sure you order some fries and aioli to share.

The food is very good, and the service is great too, and at last we have some decent pho and Vietnamese coffee in Ipswich! They also have several big share platters that look amazing. The only negative thing (which hasn't affected my rating, because I'm told is changing soon!) is that they don't have EFTPOS yet, so it's cash only at this stage.

What's great about this place is they have these amazing and cheap breakfast/brunch options here, I would strongly advise anyone to try both the falafel and kafta plate's. (Your stomach can thank me later.) If that weren't enough I dare you to walk past the heaving dessert counter and not order something. ...I kid you not, there was a 6 month period where I bought Burmas every weekend (a mouth watering combination of rolled pastry, pistachios and syrup) but I can't go past the Baklava (layers of filo pastry and cashew) or the Namora (semolina, flour and coconut.) Actually without sounding like a total addict, I highly recommend buying a 12 starter pack of sorts, this will give you a small introduction into the wide world of Greek sweets and give you an opportunity to suss out your favourites. Just remember that sharing is caring.

Food was also adequate but nothing special. Breakfast burrito had too much spinach for my liking. Probs try somewhere else next time.

Something needs to be said for the arrogance of the owner, Alberto Alarti…read more 1. The cafe wears his name, which is fine. However, it also has a cartoon portrait of him as the business's logo. This was the first sign that Alberto had tickets on himself. 2. If you look at the business card, the first detail is "Alberto Alarti: Barista". Sure, baristas play a central role in a coffee shop, but I can't be the only one who thinks this is a bit much. Of the cafe business cards I've collected recently, Alberto's Shot is the only one that celebrates the work of one man (who I haven't ever seen work as the barista when I've been there). 3. It takes a certain sort of man to think that when his baristas screw up a coffee order (which is irregular here), he can abuse them in front of all of the customers and think his cafe won't suffer for it. It's not his barista's meagre mistakes that will ruin his business into the ground, it's his behaviour. It makes for an uncomfortable experience. I always want to go and hug the baristas afterwards, pat their hair and tell them it's going to be ok. Outside of this, Alberto's Shot is a good place to come for a caffeine hit (standard flat white/cap/latte is $3.80). The food's not bad either- the servings are huge. It's right down near the river on Cordeaux Street and offers a great place to seek refuge from those searing Brisbane summer days. The seating is predominantly outdoors (only 4 seats inside) which simply forces you to lap up the cool breeze that comes in off the river. Most of their business comes from residents of of Hill End and people going to and fro the ferry. It's best to visit this cafe outside of peak hours to avoid crowds, long waits, and the possibility of seeing Alberto flying off the handle.

Pearl is one of those Woolloongabba staples, it's been around for what feels like forever, yet it…read morestill manages to have a waiting line every weekend, so they must be doing something right. We went on a busy Sunday morning, and, as usual had a roughly 30min wait time, not unexpected as Pearl is deceptively small, with a single internal room and very limited outdoor seating. We shared coffees before being seated, and as usual it was a good, but not great cup. I recommend sitting inside, as Pearl's worked hard to establish a feel good cosy atmosphere, with exposed brick walls, subtle lighting and a really wonderful open plan bar and pastry shelf area. I'll preface this by saying I've only ever eaten brunch at Pearl, but that's what I'll remember. Wonderfully inventive seasonal menus, ranged with fig pikelets, 3 cheese toasties with braised leeks, and beef brisket. The flavours they work with are always complimentary, and the servings are well sized, but not huge. The 5th star? Service and wait time for food, mainly. I've been to Pearl several times, and on most occasions found myself glancing at my watch around the 30min mark and wondering if I should order another coffee or check my phone for the 10th time. Pearl is reliably tasty, well situated, and lives up to expectations, but maybe bring a good book, or someone who can hold a conversation before you dig into those eggs.

Is this a dining destination you wait longingly to dine at? You betcha. Cafe Brisbane is a well fit-out venue with a bistro feel. She paused and pondered where she could possibly seat us in the venue that had only one table occupied. She asked if we wanted to sit inside or out and as a group, we took a moment to check with everyone and all of a sudden an older gentleman calls out loudly "inside or outside guys???" I wasn't sure whether or not to take it calmly or angrily cause it sure sounded like he wanted us to hurry up and sit down. First impression - 2/5 Fast forward to food (warmed up to the waitress at this point, she's misunderstood). I had the Reuben sandwich with fries, which I was satisfied with. The food all around looked pretty good and decently priced. But one problem was that with my friend's lamb shoulder, it was supposed to be served with gremolata, soft polenta and broccolini, the main reason why she ordered it in the first place. But what she got for the base was the first two and peas. I mean come on, really? Weirdly enough, my other friend who ordered braised cheek ended up getting broccolini with a few peas when hers should have been garlic mash, jus and peas. Really think they mixed up the bases there. My friend didn't want to take it back and complain because, well, we all know what might happen if she did. The waitress and the bar guy who let us pay when we finished were my faves. Price was good. Food was decent. Great location. Nice decor. Just needs a bit more polishing and care.
