PLEASE read this review before you camp here..There are positives and negatives to Sandy Flat. If I only knew about the negatives I could have planned better or made an informed decision to stay here or not.. The nightmare - Unfortunately if you stay on a Friday don't expect to get any sleep here ( or any other campgroup in California for that matter). Several large groups arived for the weekend and began binge drinking and partying as soon as it got dark. I assumed the loud music and the yelling of profanities would eventually end at some point, but the worst was yet to come. At midnight a large group from Long Beach pulled in already drunk (or on meth?) and they and their little kids began screaming and blasting loud music till 5am.. There was nothing anyone could do to stop it. Sandy Flat is managed by a host that lives up on the hill above the campground. There is no cell service here, no nightly patrolls by rangers. The next morning the host came down and everyone in the campground complained about those scumbags. Tip 1, the host is 100% okay with you waking (driving up the hill) to his cabin at any time of night for noise complains. Make sure you know where the host lives and be prepared to drive to his trailer at night (10pm is quiet time)... So you survived the first night. The campground is nice but there's a ton of broken bottle glass in the sand in the campsites. Make sure you and your kids always wear shoes. Most of the campsites were on a slope of some sort. Keep in mind that Sandy Flats is also a very windy campground. Be sure to bring heavy duty stakes for your tent and popup canopy. They will get blown over ( which is what happened to us).. There are very few sites that are shielded from the wind. High winds + sand isn't fun.. There are no showers here and during my visit campfires were banned because of wildfire risk.. So not ideal, but at least there's a river right? The river - This is highly dependent on environmental conditions. It can be low and stagnant or fast and unswimable. We lucked out as it was perfect conditions. The attached beach (open to the public) is great midweek as you have it mostly to yourself.. On the weekend this small beach is packed. People pitch tents right on the water's edge and block off access...That might be the biggest takeaway from my visit here along the Kern River. People that visit this area are rude and litter bugs. HUGE TIP - If you drive down to Hobo Camp and hike up the river a bit you can find some secluded areas for an amazing private day on the river.. The time we spent on the river made this trip worth it, even with all of the negatives. Other notes - Sequoia National Park is just over an hour's drive north. Great day trip. - Hike the hobo trail right behind the day use bathroom. It goes right along the river. - The hill behind sites 34 and 30 had great views of the river. Perfect for sunsets.. - I think the best site is 23. Close to the river, large site, somewhat private. If you have a small tent 34 has a covered area shielded from the wind. The worst sites were 7 (camping on a steep slope), and 33 which is also on a slope. We stayed on 31 and 29 which were okay. 29 has no shielding from the wind, 31 is shielded if you put your tent behind the rocks and under the tree. - Site host was friendly.

Had a great time here with my family over Memorial Day weekend. The caretaker for the campground was super friendly & kept everything clean, he is a gem. Shout out to him for looking out for absolutely everyone staying here! I saw him driving around & picking up stray trash that had flown away from guests' sites. He was also constantly maintaining the bathrooms which was very much appreciated as not everyone respects public amenities as much as others, if you catch my drift. If you come here, PLEASE do your part and keep everything clean, pick up your trash, be respectful, etc. Each plot has ample space, and a bench which was a plus. Some camping spaces have a ton of shade & others not so much, so be sure to bring a canopy or two. There is a fire pit to keep warm or cook, just be sure to bring firewood & pots/pans. There are restrooms & spouts to wash your hands. The rapids were very strong this weekend so we couldn't go in the water very deep but it was still a great time seeing the wild life & all the beauty nature has to offer. We saw cows, capybaras, and many other animals. I would definitely come here again, and I recommend it to everyone who wants to experience real camping out by the water, NOT glamping. There's no showers, so you make due with the natural water, or bring your own outdoor shower. Also it gets very windy so bring extra heavy duty stakes. Long story short, come prepared! This is nature after all :)

Good little spot to camp out. I think we were 24. Close to the river and bathrooms. Bathrooms need spring hinges on doors to keep the smell in. Also maybe a sign to keep lid closed on toilet. Otherwise smell kicks up and wind blows at you... River was fun. I can tell why it's called killer kern. Rope swing Tubing Cold water was refreshing on a hot day 102. Bob was a good host. Seemed on top of things. All and all a fun 1 night trip up from LA. Beware the bees and fire ants.

    Hope this helps !!!!

Sandy flats is a great place to camp. First off the rangers are very friendly, they allowed us to drive in and pick a spot then later them came to us so we can pay our over night stay fee and at least we didn't have to track them down. Campsites we clean and all include a fire pit with grill attached to it. The bathrooms were just a short walking distance from campsite oh they just don't flush but at least they are cleaned daily. There were no spider webs inside the bathrooms :) I do plan to stay here again soon.

Sandy Flat Campground Reviews in Other Languages

Ask the Community - Sandy Flat Campground

    Are RVs allowed?

Yes, but there are no hook ups and you must reserve the sites that have a long enough driveway for an RV. Each site has a driveway length capacity on the reservation site.

Are the reserved spots actually reserved or is it doesn't come first serve. I'm reading different things on the web about this policy?

It depends on the time of year. If you reserve a spot during their peak season which is during the summer or holidays then an actual site number of your choosing is reserved at time of payment but on all other days during their open season it's… Read more

Anyone know how site 23 is?

Its ok but the best ones are #22-21 and 19

TLDR; Great time, nice campsites, friendly staff, clean bathroom and showers Check in is at 3pm but we got caught up in some traffic on the way there and couldn't arrive until 6:45. Got an email and text message with a picture of where our envelope with our information would be that contained the gate code, campsite, and a map of the campground. Very nice. We pulled in and as I was grabbing the envelope a man named Scot who was working there greeted me and asked if I needed any help. Told him that it's our first time here and he offered to show us to our campsite and lead us in his golf cart. When we pulled into the campsite it was clean and the ground was even raked! Which was perfect for us to immediately start setting up our tent. Even the fire pit was raked and clean, there was shade galore which my wife with sensitive skin greatly appreciated. Full cell service with T-Mobile Noticed that the bench at our site could use some TLC, looked like someone put too hot of a pot on it and burned a pretty decent divot into it and it was leaning. Still useable and not a deal breaker for us. There were 2 water spouts to fill up the bucket we used to put out our fire and clean our dishes very close by our site with good pressure. The river was a stones throw away from our campsite which provided great white noise to fall asleep to. One of the rules is that Quiet time is at 10pm. I've been camping elsewhere with the same rule but never have I've seen it enforced unless you call and complain. Staff would drive by around 9:30 on the golf cart, I assume to see who is still playing music, and then again at 10. Which was great. They didn't announce the rule or even say anything as they drove by, but just making their presence known was very professional and reassuring. Since we didn't get to check in properly we had to go back up to the main office/ general store to submit a registration card, that was in the envelope I picked up, to finish checking in. The woman checking us in was nice, friendly, quick, and efficient. She suggested we stop by McNally's further up about 40min drive if we were looking for something to do or eat. 11/10 suggestion. It was all n all a great time. We will be back. Worth the money.

It was an amazing place to stay at Kern River was so awesome (check out Big Daddy, it's so…read morebeautiful). The customer service was okay. I personally felt that they were treating my group and I like we were stupid or something. We had a big wasp problem at our campsite and though they did help us by putting up a trap, they acted like it was completely up to us to fix their problem. That only happened one night but the wasps did resurface the next morning so we left as soon as possible. We also had a big skunk problem at our site. We couldn't relax at the campfire because the skunks would come up to us every couple of minutes and we would have to shoo them away. They would also rummage through our stuff which was covered and put away to our best extent. They thankfully didn't mess with the tent but they did spray a bit when we were trying to sleep. This was both nights. If you're someone who is willing to look past that and persevere definitely try this place it is so worth it. I would maybe come back, as long as I wouldn't have to deal with the wasps again lol. I will say the restrooms and showers were very clean so that does encourage me to not be shy on coming back.

Kim and her staff are absolutely incredible! They are friendly, funny, witty, and genuinely enjoy making every camper feel like family. You can tell they love what they do, and it shows in every detail. They go above and beyond to keep everyone entertained with rock painting for the kids, pool activities, ice cream socials, music, pizza nights, chicken wings, and so much more. There is always something fun happening, and it's easy to see why families love coming back. The shower facilities deserve a special mention--they are absolutely beautiful and exceptionally clean. Honestly, they are some of the cleanest campground showers I've ever seen! The fish-cleaning station was another pleasant surprise. It was well-maintained, convenient, and spotless. One of the things we appreciated most was how safe and peaceful the campground felt. Walking around at any time was comfortable, and when quiet hours began, they truly were quiet. It made for a relaxing and enjoyable stay. Thank you, Kim, and your entire staff, for creating such a welcoming, family-friendly campground. We had had a LONG driving day, it was getting dark, and we were not familiar with the Lake Isabella area. We passed several National Sequoia Forest campgrounds on the lake that had vacancies but Tillie Creek was still further along -- and required navigating a curvy road where the speed limit and driving by locals was too fast for conditions. When our GPS reported that we had reached, we didn't see any signage that a campground was there so we mistakenly missed it. However, we then noticed picnic tables and fire rings that were suggestive of the campground so we turned back and found the campground. Finding a site. (Rating: 4/5). Being mid-week, almost ALL of the sites were available but most had tags that they were reserved for the weekend. We selected a fairly level site -- and were soon joined by the camp host who checked us in and gave us our car tag. He also warned us to be careful because there were rattlesnakes in the area. We only saw a bunny! It turned out that only the camp host, another rv, and us were the only ones on-site for the night. It also turned out that our selected site (#18) wasn't ideal because there was early morning traffic noise. This campground does not offer showers, but it does have restrooms and water spigots. Also note that one section of the campground isn't being maintained -- beyond where Tillie Creek had flooded. Also, to our knowledge, the lake is not easily accessible from the campground.

We chose a site in a grove of trees and it's been amazing have shade throughout the entire day. The campground isn't perfect, we were lost when we first came in, went up the road to some mobile homes and then finally when we reached the campground it looked slightly abandoned. The booth where you check in was abandoned, in disrepair and full of cobwebs, a playground was full of empty frames of where swings and stuff should be, and like I mentioned before looked empty. We eventually found the camp host who was very pleasant and helpful though and were given the choice to pick any site we wanted. About an hour from Sequoia's trail of 100 giants and a few minutes from the French Gulge Marina where we rented some kayaks. Only real downside was there were a lot of wasps at our campsite when we tried to prepare food and no showers on site either. Toilets are basically outhouses but were kept clean. All in all had a good weekend away here.
