To be honest, I'm not even sure how I got there. It's not even worth it. Inside the place is encrusted with blandness and the drink selection skips through the usual lager cavalcade without having anything new or even decently priced. It's the kind of pub you'd hope to be able to boast about discovering, like some show-offy traveller, but you can't because it's so dull.

The Richmond is just on the outskirts of the Allerton area and as such, seems to attract all those…read morewho are vocally opposed to the high heeled brigade who tramp up and down Allerton Road. In the daytime it is bright and airy and has a fairly decent menu for somewhere that doesn't consider itself to be a gastropub. In fact, it's one of the only pubs that claims food is served all day (or until 9pm at least) and has successful themed nights like curry night on a Thursday. In the evening, it seems to be popular with people who work in the local area and have just knocked off, rather than people who live in the local area and have just spent 2 hours getting ready. A typical pub where you're bound to bump into someone you know and you inevitably get stuck in the loos having a good old gossip with someone you only met 5 minutes ago. This is a nice place to socialise locally, and there tends to be a more mature crowd, although there isn't a defined age range.

However, it would be a shame to overlook this pub as it's got a great atmosphere with a good mix of students and locals as it is pretty central to student territory. They also have a pub quiz on Tuesdays (9pm start if you're keen!) for a £50 cash prize, now who can say no to £50 to end a night of what we can only assume will be drunken 'No, it's definitely A, well possibly C' and 'Engelbert Humperdinck wasn't his real name though was it?!''s. So pop in for a pint, and you might find that you've discovered a new local, at least somewhere a bit quieter to go if you've found yourself in the Brookhouse beforehand.

The Clachan is only on the radar of thos who neither fit the bill of student or grad, local or old. It belongs mainly to those wishing to purely drink to death. Me and a mate have ventured in when other pubs have been too busy because of football or just wishing to have a pint in every place that we pass and God the atmosphere is a killer - I'm not sure if the dog belonged to anyone in there or was part of the decor but its sad face looked like it would say 'end it' if it had a chance, I mean I've even seen some of those dogs with homeless guys who at least have an expression of 'well, we've had some adventures along the way'. There are many other places along Smithdown, not all good but at least with something about them.

We have been known to cause problems, so I was initially a bit worried that the bar staff would struggle to control us if one thing led to another. However, they managed to restrain a few of my mates quite well when they tried having it out with an individual who claimed that we were 'southern' - which we are. Obviously the fact that some of us did cause a problem and had it out with locals was negative but that was expected as the lads and I are widely renowned for that. I find that this pub, with exceptional ambience and strong community links, gave us a good experience and overall handled us really well. The pricing was reasonable, leading the posse to drink an uncouth amount of beer (which we are regarded to frequently do so), so I would 100% return here. Unfortunately, I am not sure when a return to Wigan is imminent.
