I've been to Dr. Spender several times in the past, but this visit was a deal killer. Thoroughly unprofessional service. I was informed after arriving that they no longer accept any medicare insurance, then was told to wait on a chair in the adult diaper aisle for "a few minutes." Never Again. This is the optometrist in Costco in Palm Beach Gardens. I was in Costco to see the hearing aid group, and booked an appointment for an optometry exam, figuring this will be inexpensive and easy. WRONG, WRONG, WRONG!!!! Bait-and-swtich pricing, but more to the point, the optimitrist did not bother to see me, and the office was completely uncommunicative. I ended up walking out after having been there for 75 minutes. Costco ought to boot Dr. Spender out of there. She is a stain to their name. read more

I've gone to Dr. Spender for 2 years now and truly appreciate the exceptional service. The equipment is exceptional and assures Dr. Spender will be able to make the best decision possible for my eyes. I must also speak about the folks in the glasses department. The young woman who reviewed my prescription took the time not only to carefully set the chosen eyeglasses but she also recommended the ones she thought best for me. Dr. Spender is fantastic. I have been seeing her for 8 years. She took the time to find the correct lenses (both for comfort and vision) for my eyes which was no easy task due to reactions I had with many of the lenses on the market. I feel my eye care needs are being met in a professional, relaxed environment. Latest technology compacted in a small footprint of the Costco Warehouse store. I never have a problem getting in to see the doctor when I have a problem. I have recommended several friends and they too are very pleased with Dr. Spender and the eye care they received. I read Joanne's negative review below, and while she explains the office environment, she did not experience a one on one with the doctor, nor did she stop the test and alert the technician that she was too distracted to focus on the test with the background discussion. She walked out before truly experiencing the doctor's level of professional eye care. My ophthalmologist refers patients to Dr. Spender for care, and that says something about this office! read more

I had an appointment with this doctor at Costco in Palm Beach Gardens today. Despite the expected "warehouse" environment of Costco in general, I found this small cluttered office within Costco to be dismal and dark. My first impression was this environment was not conducive to optimal vision testing- it was dim and dark in this outer area where the initial testing would be done. I was asked to sit down for an eye exam which I have had before: this is the eye exam to assess peripheral vision where one eye is covered and you have to press a button when you see the random flashing signals on the screen. Call me old at 62, but this test requires a modicum of concentration, at least for me it does. Within seconds of starting the test, apparently the 'eye doctor' came out from behind me and started discussing with the tech who was supposed to have been administering the test, their office work schedule and could the tech work additional hours, change her schedule, etc. I found this to be quite a distraction and something that certainly could have and SHOULD have been discussed when 'patients' were not in the office, and certainly not when I was in the middle of this testing. When the test seemed like it might have been over for my right eye, they were still discussing the office work schedule while I sat there, head engaged up to the eye testing machine, wondering if I was done and waiting for further instructions. It was then that I decided I was not comfortable in what I was experiencing from this eye care provider so far and I should have went with my initial 'gut' instinct when I first walked into this space and felt it was dismal at best. It was then that I announced that "this was not working for me" as I got up and proceeded to leave. It was then that the 'doctor' asked if there was a problem and I told her I felt their conversation was a distraction to my testing, rude and inappropriate and I left. I am not a cranky fuddy dud of a person-I am a retired registered nurse and the lack of professionalism I experienced in this 'office' is unacceptable to me as a former healthcare provider. While Costco may have discount prices I am not willing to compromise on the professionalism I expected when I made an appointment for an eye exam. I could not help but feel this 'eye doctor' would not be able to give me and my vision concerns the attention I expected. Very disappointed in what I saw there today. This is so unlike Costco's standard of service and I wanted to share my experience for others who might be expecting professionalism from their 'eye doctor'. I was looking forward to a pleasant experience based on the very positive reviews on the internet for this provider but this was just not something I was comfortable with. read more

I live in New Jersey but I will always make it a point to get my prescription from Dr Spender when I visit Florida. Last year I had a horrible experience with an optometrist in New Jersey who could not get my prescription right. I suffered with poor vision because I believed that my eyes were simply deteriorating.
