I have been getting my hair cut and colored for the last 10 years since I started getting grey. I have a lot of thick dark brown hair and it generally takes forever to get it done. I have sat in a hairstylist chair for 3-4 hours and I thought that is just how things are. I was looking for a new hairstylist as my previous person changed his hours and I could not make it work. This is especially because it always took so long. I tried another person who took longer. Getting my hair done became an act of procrastination as well as a Tetris act. I'm a single mom, own a business and have a personal life. Sitting in a chair for 5 hours was hard. The time came when I could wait no longer. I knew of this place and it was 5 minutes away from me. People seemed to like it and they had an opening for me on Saturday at 2. In my mind I thought "there goes my Saturday" and planned on being there until 6pm. I figured I would have them cut another day if the color took too long. I moved my plans around because I thought I had no choice. I arrived at 2pm and I was done at 3:30 with color,highlights and a beautiful cut. I am amazed by the quality of the cut, and efficiency. I am never going anywhere else again. They really know what they are doing and most importantly they did not appear overwhelmed by thick, dark abundant hair. I also did not pay an arm and a leg. I needed a quick, cheap manicure and this place had time for me, but the whole experience was a little creepy. The technician was close to 80 years old. There were only about 12 polish colors to choose from--and not all of them were "nice" brands like OPI or Essie--and when the tech couldn't open the color I had chosen, she just grabbed another and said, "This one is close enough." As she worked, I noticed that all over the table were nail clippings--big chunky bits and little slivers. Seriously repulsive. read more

Had a haircut a few weeks ago with "Sandy". I am not sure if she was having a bad morning but she was kind of hostile. She said things like "I have no clue what you are talking about", "I know you haven't been here in months, I looked up your account in our computer", "people really don't know how to use shampoo, they waste their time", etc. I am pretty sure it was nothing personal, but it was not a comfortable haircut. She did a good job but I would never ask for her again. Strange. read more

So now that I no longer have time to travel back and forth from Oak Park to Algonquin to see my favorite colorist, Patti (with whom I have a ten year relationship), I decided I needed to find a place closer to home. Sandra Ross Salon is about three blocks from my condo so the location is perfect. When I stepped inside I noticed that it was much uglier/trashier than I was used to (i.e. cluttered, outdated colors, old formica stations, no decoration except trashy halloween tchatchkes). There seemed to be no dress code at all as some workers were dressed in old jeans and tees. The salon was not very clean or organized, and I'm pretty sure that they did not wash the aprons for the customers after each use because I found many unidentifiable hairs on my shirt after leaving (EEEW). My appointment began with a hi-lite/ lo-lite. The colorist and I had a very brief consultation before she started on what turned out to be a very, very skimpy job. Additionally, she did not consult with me on which shade I would prefer for the lo-lite. I think there was only one drier in the salon and it was pretty old and not very hot, so it took quite a while under there before I was done. Although I was not satisfied with the work, I thought that the colorist was very sweet but quiet. Then I had a hair cut. This stylist was more outgoing and bubbly than the colorist. She did a great job on my hair cut and style, although it took her a long time for the style. As I was paying, I was told I could not use my credit card for tips, which was really inconvenient since then I had to write two checks- one for the colorist and one for the stylist. The coloring service was overpriced for the skimpiness of the job. Overall, I was unsatisfied with my experience at Sandra Ross Salon. The skimpy hi-lite/lo-lite, incomplete consultation, and overall trashiness would not allow me to recommend this salon. read more

I finally found Chelsea after I saw a woman in a hardware store parking lot with a great haircut and asked her where she got her hair done... I followed Sandra from a previous salon when she opened her own business simply because she is a skilled stylist and barber. You say BARBER? That right, Sandy is trained and licensed in Illinois as both a hair stylist and a barber . She is a master at making the perfect military style good on the first day haircut that even few barbers ever master (when I was in the Army, the rule was plan you hair cut two days before dress inspections to make sure you looked sharp and how I wish I had met Sandra before I retired from the Army) and I my haircut feels "sharp as a matsa ball" as my late father in law would say when I would walk away from her chair. And she is a true master at beard trims (she makes my beard look great EVERY hair cut even if I butchered it in between) and I have been asked by numerous other beard wearers who trims my beard and now they too go to Sandy for beard trims (even if another barber or stylist cuts their hair). Sandy is extremely talented in making short military/business style haircuts look sharp immediately and is an expert in trimming beards so that your beard looks neat and distinguished, an asset not a debit to your appearance. And as I said, if in your own attempts to trim you make a mistake Sandy can rescue just about any man faux pas and return that beard wearer to a neat presentation. And based on other comparable barbers, her price for men's haircuts and beard trims are quite reasonable even by corner barbershop standards. The day Sandy retires, my grooming is gong to take a real dive. She is highly recommended. And her ship is light and airy and clean and friendly with genuinely nice staff. And there is plenty of street parking, Val Halla Records and the Buzz Café with in and easy walk as well as an El stop on the Blue line. What more could you ask for.
