And the staff members that help out on the braces, your rubber bands not sure should if should call them Orthodontist Nurses lol but they are on point nice friendly.. funny and just really down to earth. They also Remember your name ... I come in sit down and I can't get comfortable because Im not waiting long to be seated for my appointment. Which is fabulous.... Initially I was going to have my consultation back in 2020, but when COVID-19 shutdowns began I had to cancel. I eventually rescheduled, however had another orthodontist (which I won't name but I will say is located in Castro Valley) I was considering too. The Dr. was also nice and skilled in ortho, however their financial lady who seemed to doubt that I could afford paying is ultimately why I decided to not go forward. I didn't have that experience at San Leandro Smiles and coming here was definitely worth the wait! The doctors and their wonderful staff treated me well throughout my treatment. I love how attentive to detail, caring and passionate Dr. Sexton, Hope, Felicia and Brittany all were. So I don't really think too much about braces. I had them as a child. But now I'm considering getting them again. The staff at this place are respectful and non invasive - and heck, they might even make you feel good about your smile. And if they can help make your smile better, they will do so - and given that I am connected with their PPO, they got me a great deal too. I went in for a braces screening and will likely get braces with these folks after checking out quite a few competitors. Plus, hey, they got free coffee, tea, cider, gotta love the Keurig machine! (Except they suck as far as the environment as we know but hey, maybe I'll start bringing my compostable or reusable Keurig cups with me. Had a very awkward/unpleasant experience with the African American woman who checked me in today. I had wish I had gotten her name, but I was so stunned and confused at her blatantly abashing me for trying to answer her question that I didn't know how to respond. I explained to her how my progress had been going, then she asked me again to reclarify something. I proceeded to speak and she rudely interrupted me and said with an attitude "I can hear you. You don't need to raise your voice at me. I am just charting" and then walked away without allowing me to finish. The doctor then came to talk to me as she threw my next tray onto the counter in front of him as if she was a child throwing a hissyfit. I was quite taken aback because I don't believe I raised my voice at all and was just genuinely trying to answer her question before she snapped at me suddenly. Mind you, they have music playing constantly so perhaps I may have adjusted my voice for that? She was, after all, asking me to repeat what I had said again so actually I supposed it wouldn't be all that unreasonable to assume that perhaps she didn't hear me the first time? Either way, I had absolutely no malicious intention towards her to warrant her to snap at me and treat me that way. No one else seemed to have heard me and I'm pretty sure if I was truly yelling at this woman they would have. It took me a little time to get myself re-situated from the awkward encounter as I was so confused as to how that even happened given that, to me, I was speaking in my normal tone of voice. In my confusion, I even told the doc softly that I didn't mean to raise my voice at this woman. He did not apologize on her behalf. She honestly made me feel really bad and confused. It was clearly a matter of miscommunication, but definitely not how I would have handled it. I work in healthcare and am patient-facing everyday and I can tell you I've had much more uncomfortable things said to me, people raise their voices at me, even blatantly make sexist and racist comments to me but I don't ever snap back at them or lose my professionalism. I definitely think it is warranted to set expectations for patients as well and NOT okay for patients to behave inappropriately/abusively but I felt like this situation was a little premature and again, there is a way to deliver your expectations in a professional manner/tone. The actual orthodontist seems okay. I'm sure he's competent and he seems like a nice guy but usually when I come in for an appointment I spend very little actual time with the doctor--probably average of 3-4 minutes. Usually it goes: staff checks me in, scribes for him what I say, he takes a look, says it looks good, tells his staff to give me a bag of my aligners and sends me off on my merry way. Perhaps this is the nature of Invisalign since the computer has done all the work and now it's just a matter of making sure I'm compliant and on track. He doesn't spend time really explaining what's going on in terms of my progress during the visits, which I thought was normal until my husband shared his experience with me with another provider. Per my husband, at each visit, the doctor would tell him how he's doing with his aligners, what has changed, how the rubber bands are doing, how much longer he needs them, and the doc made some tweaks so that the teeth could fit appropriately, etc. Granted, Dr. Sexton did explain some of my progress when I asked him during this appointment as I was concerned I didn't see much of a change, but he doesn't seem to offer much without prompting. Usually I am just told that I'm "tracking along well", which is great, though now that I am more than half way through I realized that I don't really know what that means or what to anticipate moving forward which is concerning when my follow up interval continues to be extended more and more. So if you want to know more information, expect to ask and be more participatory in your own care. My primary goal was to fix my front tooth that was sticking out and causing food to constantly be stuck (and everything else was secondary, but since I was paying big bucks to do it might as well fix everything), though so far I haven't noticed much of a change in this tooth but he doesn't really tell address this concern in the followup visits. The only explanation I got was a brief one 4 months ago when I started this process of what was "the plan"--all things I still don't really understand since I'm not an ortho so hence the importance of followup visits and further explanation/anticipatory guidance. All in all, as a private practice (particularly for something that is expensive and usually elective), I would presume you would want the best and most professional front-facing staff and customer service.I cannot say this is true for this practice after my experience today. I kindly request to not have the same woman check me in again for fear of any further miscommunication. Thanks. read more

Both my kids see Dr. Sexton and the awesome staff at San Leandro Smiles. I appreciated the thorough consultation to begin, transparency and details about the treatment plan, options, and explanations of cost. Since we've started, I've appreciated the staff's attention to my kids' different personalities and needs and how easy it is to get in for a same day appointment when we need to have a bracket replaced. Everyone is friendly and caring and it's clear that Dr. Sexton is really knowledgeable about orthodontia, offering more modern/innovative ways to treat the kids (and show them about their treatment plans) than I found at other orthodontic practices I visited. It's cool that the staff knows the kids' names, asks about them, and tries to support have both kids come together when possible. You won't go wrong coming here! read more

Today was my very first time going into this office and let me tell you it was AMAZING! They are being super precautious with all the new Covid guideline rules, only letting a certain amount of people in and once you arrive you have to text to have your temp taken before entering the building. Once you enter they direct you to the hand washing station which made me feel even more comfortable knowing every patient sitting in the chair is clean. Gina was my assistant today and she was awesome, so sweet and kind made me feel so relaxed. Dr.Sexton was great ! He gave me all the information I needed and made me feel so welcomed. Not only is the staff great but the office it self is BEAUTIFUL and up to date. Since I left I called and texted so many of my friends and family to come here.
