Never been here (but always wanted to come) during one of our many visits to SD. This place appears to be the only LGBTQ+ bar that has weekend happy hour; however, when I googled it online it states HH from open (2pm) til 7pm but those hours are incorrect as there's chalkboard signage that states HH fr 4 to 7. Anyhow, this bar is much smaller than I had anticipated and luckily we arrived half an hr after opening as it was dead and I couldn't imagine how it is packed. As for drinks, top shelf Tito's is way overpriced at 12 bucks each, no thanks (not sure if cheaper during HH). Bartender was friendly though. read more

Eagle San Diego is the last and only Leather and Levi cruise bar located in North Park in a city with a population of over one million. Sad to say, but the advent of the internet and the inevitable generational changes have decimated bars and other small businesses.  San Diego Eagle's basically a dive bar which serves as an all male sanctuary where men yearn for the camaraderie of other men in real time and not in some online virtual space or hookup app. It is a place where men want to be exclusively surrounded by male hormones & pheromones. You can have anything you want as long as it's mostly BEER. Very "blue collar" feel as most Eagles the world over are apt to be. It's a place to let your hair down, burp, scratch crotches, tell your buddy that he's a bitch. Some of the clientele may be professionals, academics, entrepreneurs, but they're wearing torn jeans, "wife beaters", rough boots.  Prissy clean queens, who complain about how dirty, smelly, low down, funky with their noses up in the air, enter at their own risk. It's man's country with little of the niceties. You're not going to get Krug Grande Cuvée Brut nor Dom Pérignon here, and I'm perfectly happy with that. Go to the Addison for the fancy stuff.  In our increasingly digitized world, it's comfortIng to know there is a real bar with real people, drinking beer and talking schit.  4 stars  PS  Only drawback: Good luck tryIng to find any street parking at all even on a late weekday afternoon. read more

I used to love this place but it's changed with the times, unfortunately. It used to be the last place in San Diego where gay guys could just go be gay guys and anything goes (if you know what I mean), but you're not allowed to be openly freaky anymore and have to go into the restroom to have "real fun." Not saying it's a bad thing and at least the possibility is still there, but the pure unfiltered sexuality of that place was a thing I cherished before and now the bartenders will quickly check you if you're not behaving like a nun in that place. Very disappointed. My girlfriend and I stumbled across this place after a concert and was excited to find a cool spot with a pool table. We realized it was a gay bar, but didn't think much of it. And a a few of the couples inside were very welcoming and cool. We made good friends, bought multiple drinks, and brought people into playing pool with us. All of the sudden, a new patron came in, my girlfriend tried to be social and friendly, and he started raising his voice at her and told her "SHE DIDNT BELONG HERE" .. I turned and looked and he THREW his drink at her. I confronted him, but was promptly surrounded, and told I had to leave. The bar tender allowed the behavior of the patron, and I felt like the bar tender didn't want us there in the first place. Felt very discriminatory. Don't kick out the two people who were bringing energy and fun to your bar. We did not realize it was a "leather daddy" bar; as one of our new friends explained to us outside. Lesson learned and we will not be visiting again, nor should you if you are a woman read more

Bar lit up with red lightbulbs and a white one for the pool table. It was dark inside but could have been darker. The music in the background is pretty low. Not much of a place for dancing. It's more of a cruising spot. There's two bathrooms. One is actually used as a bathroom. Other one I would recommend going in to watch. The drinks were about $11 each. The bartender seemed nice. Met a nice straight couple celebrating a birthday but the wife was told she was too loud when she made a good shot at pool. Went here around 7:15 p.m on a Monday to entertain our visitors. The ambience was very folsom street bars in San Francisco. We didn't try the food. The bartender yelled at us for trying to take a picture of the the Eagle sign. He could of just asked us to not to take pictures. Instead of yelling HEY!! Hey!! Don't do that. The feeling and customer service we received was very off putting. Sadly, this will probably be the last time I will enter That establishment. I'll start with two things- 1. This is a bar for gay men to be their most authentic and most comfortable self, be it in golf clothes or leather gear. 2. I am not a gay man, but I am not a straight woman. While I don't feel like this is MY spot, nobody tried to make me feel like I was an intruder. How'd I end up at the Eagle? For my birthday I had spent all of Saturday having a good time. I enjoyed a Mardi Gras Bites and Booze crawl. afterwards I had gone to The Mad Hatter's Ball at The Observatory which was full of burlesque and cirque performers. I could only think of one way to cap off this night- A stop at the Eagle as Saturday night is Gear Night AND this particular Saturday night they were having an underwear contest. "What'd you do for your birthday?" was definitely going to be a STORY. I lead my friend off the beaten path of University Ave. where we were passing CA Tap Room so a pretzel was needed. Once were suitably pretzel stuffed we headed to the bar...club...Eagle. I'm siding more on the dive bar side of things though. Our IDs were checked and we chatted with the doormen and Mr. San Diego Eagle 2020 himself. The attitude was "welcome, go on in, have a good time!" So far so good, even though I'm sure they thought we were straight chick tourists on a gay safari. I was ready for some dudes to booo our arrival, that whole gay safari thing, since I wasn't even close to blending in. I was wearing a big black sparkly skirted dress, a large tiara, and 32 strands of Mardi Gras beads. In the light or not, you couldn't miss me! While I was the only one in the place wearing a big ol' tiara, I surprisingly was not the only one wearing beads. I ended up fishing a purple strand out of my gigantic pile of neck decor for the another beadwearer who said he couldn't find a purple one at home. Sharing is caring! That's yet another friendly dude encountered here. We stuck to the front of the bar area and watched some seriously good pool players sink balls with a skill I lack. Sadly I missed the bartender's name, but he was also friendly and said his fave drink they had was Skrewball. Somehow my friend had never tried it. Naturally we had to go for the nuts. Fun fact: guzzling this on an empty stomach is awful, so I'm so glad we ate the pretzels beforehand. Skrewball, like most booze, needs a bed. A few more guys came over to talk about my tiara, wish me a happy birthday, and just be welcoming. The cool thing about treating people like people, and not worthwhile only as potential sex partners, is that you can just enjoy a spot together, sipping your peanut butter whiskey and wondering how long it's been since you had a PB&J sandwich and if you even like PB&J sandwiches. Could I have entered this underwear contest? I was told I could at the door, but something in my gut told me I wouldn't get the votes needed to win. Was about to be the Bloomberg in that race. I don't need to look like a fool to have a good time, ha. I was there to see some men with normal bodies celebrated in the spotlight. Plus could one ever see too many men in little undies? Didn't think so. Support men in small undies. They look good and baggy boxers are hiding good buns for no reason. I didn't get to see who won as my friend was tapping out after our very full day. But at least for awhile I got to enjoy a welcoming atmosphere, sip some drinks, and learn it's better to go to a spot and have your own experiences than write it off because some people had a bad time. I even met more friendly dudes outside! Is this going to be my new hangout spot? No, it's not really for me and I have other gay bars that are more mixed. But it's also not against me either, so I'm open to popping in for another fun underwear contest or something. If I was a gay man I would come here often, hence my rating. San Diego Eagle is not for all, but it's definitely for some. It's the some that this place IS for that really matter. I really wanna like this place because I loved the eagle back in Minneapolis, but man the people there make it tough sometimes. Was essentially picked on by the bartender and his friends for my hat because it said California to my apparent accent since I'm from Minnesota, it felt super childish, lol. What an awkward experience. It was like I was in high school again. I was waiting for a friend, but left before even getting a drink. Yeah, this place was awful. I was in San Diego for Pride with some friends, and got kidnapped against my will and taken here because one member of our party is into the leather scene. We arrived to find ten very bored and depressed looking men sitting around the bar, chatting quietly. The music in the jukebox was standard gay bar fare... the sound quality just so-so. I really wanted to be anywhere else within about thirty seconds. The bartenders looked at us like we didn't belong (it was mid-afternoon during Pride so we were in shorts and tanktops), the crowd seemed dismissive, the vibe just totally depressing and not fun. We left after 20 minutes and I've never been so grateful to leave a place... Leather bars aren't my scene, but I've had fun times occasionally at venues in San Francisco and Los Angeles. The truth is I think each bar should have its own distinct style, clientele and of course atmosphere. I do like leather bars for the atmosphere and I gave SD Eagle four stars because it is what it is. Leather is not as prominent here in SD as it was in my former city, Chicago. I consider SD Eagle 2 stars in the leather bar rating, 4 stars from the dive point of view, 3 stars for entertainment sometimes (underwear night, special events). Overall, I would give it 3.5 stars but I get caught again in that there is no 1/2 star ratings here. Only go with your friends for safety if you are straight or not into leather. It is not a zoo to gawk at, just a bar to say to your friends that you visited with its leather posters, St. Andrews cross (the X cross on the side of the bar). Warning, if you are a dainty boy or girl and hate dirty wash rooms, go at the restaurant before diving into this world! read more

I will admit I went here during the daytime on a weekend with an out of town guest. The bar was crowded with your usual fare of leather men, none of which seemed too friendly. Perhaps our butch haircuts scared them off or perhaps it was just a bad afternoon. Luckily the bartender was cordial and efficient and we stayed for a while and people-watched. I've been patronizing the Eagle for decades now and I like many things about it... the divey atmosphere, the "easy" and "flirty" customers, the alcohol level in the drinks. And I realize that we are currently in the midst of a nasty virus so many things are unusual and uncomfortable during these COVID19 guidelines. So thank you, Eagle, for even being open for drinks and "food". My complaint is that there is nothing offered for vegetarians. The two food options are either chicken wings and meat-based pizza. The bartenders always suggest that one can just buy the food and not eat it. Sure. But is that at all fair to your many vegetarian customers who are quite upset that nothing is ever offered for us even though we've brought it up to management numerous times?! This place is dangerous for women. Was invited here with several women friends by a couple regulars. Had no idea what awaited us. We were drinking beer and playing darts having a good time despite the smell when the owner told us to leave. When we asked why he said we were too loud. We were then surrounded by several of the male patrons and threatened. One of the especially weird men yelled that he hoped we all got raped! I think he was wishing that for himself. I guess if you are male and you hate your mother or some female in your life has made you think poorly of yourself...this is the pee hole for you. I've passed this the eagle many times and I visit friends who live within walking distance all the time. I have been to the leather district in San Francisco many times, and been to Folsom st fair so I am no stranger to leather. I am not gay, and I am a girl, apparently I am not welcome at The Eagle. Granted I am not into the leather scene, that is no reason to make someone else feel uncomfortable. I came in one night after Ray at Night with two of my gay friends, and my best friend who is also a girl. There is a single blue light outside the bar, and the windows are blacked out. Upon entering you pass under some leather strips hanging from the door. As soon as you enter there is an unmistakable scent of sweaty steam. The bar was literally drenched in sweat. The air was warm, wet and stinky. It was hard to imagine drinking anything in there it was so stinky. All eyes were on us as we moved around the bar. Lets just say I saw more than one man getting a bj in there, and we were most definately laughed at when we passed by. Not too fun. Needless to say we did not spend more than 10 minutes in there. read more

I have been to Several Eagle Bars across this country and I have to say this has been the most disappointing bar not only that I have been too baring the Eagle name, but one of the worst bars I have ever been too. The staff was not friendly, the measure out their drinks and make them weak AF... We actually complained and asked for an additional shot.. almost $40 for 2 weak drinks even after the additional shot.... get your shit together Eagle SD... maybe visit some of your Eagle bars cause even Vegas has you beat and that's pretty sad for a Community like San Diego... your missing out on some serious business.... read more

When a leather bar with a great past turns ghetto North Park and the gay community are both in trouble. Over the past years, I often popped into the eagle for a stiff one ( a drink dirty minds) at a great price. This week a snotty bartender, James or Oraulak ( or so the receipt claimed) served up a Bombay and a Jameson, in plastic cafeteria cups, and charged $20.25. The San Diego eagle always lacked the leather of the other Eagle in the US, (basically SD eagle is the Girl Scout troop of the real Eagle) but at least in the past they offered a stiff one in a real glass at a great price. There are "Eagle' bars in many cities, and while they are for the most part unrelated businesses, there are some commonalities one expects from the pseudo-brand: a dark bar, chains, motorcycles. S&M gear, posters of other leather bars, hot shirtless bartenders, and most importantly, lots of men in leather. The San Diego Eagle has all those elements. Unfortunately, the whole is less than the sum of the parts. Perhaps it is the jukebox selections (Abba & Barbara Striesand, in a leather bar?) Perhaps it is the fact that they play the same two S&M videos every night. Perhaps it is the "neo graphitti" decor, complete with haphazard chain link. Perhaps it is the black light (what's that about?). In any event the combination feels like someone who has never been in a leather bar has tried to create one. On the plus side, the drinks are cheap by San Diego standards (although like other bars in town their mixer list does not include ginger ale), the hot bartender is particularly hot, and there are numerous specials. The bottom line is that I will continue to go, mainly because it is the only game in town. True, San Diego is not known as a leather hot-spot, but a city this size should be able to support a decent leather bar. read more

I was here on a Sunday afternoon with a friend. First visit. We were the only two in there - along with the two bartenders. The beer was cold and cheap - pint of Bud Light (who am I?!) and a Heineken was $5. The music was some of the best music i've ever heard in a bar. Seriously. I'm still sorta trippin' on this fact. Perhaps I'm a pervert, but there's definitely a place in my heart for "dark and seedy." Especially when it's done so intentionally. It's a leather bar, not the Copa Cabana. Sometimes I consider myself some kind of biological aberration for being able to appreciate both extremes. Anyway, I know that the owner cares deeply for his patrons and tries very hard to cater to the leather community. The "discipline" devices on display here are definitely fit for operation. But if it's still not up to everyone's expectations, maybe some suggestions should be relayed to the management, as opposed to empty criticism.
