Now then. My little re-visit of this darling café, nudged on by the lovely Rosey M, just goes to show that it's always worth giving a place a second chance. Since my last visit, and last review, these folks appear to have had a make over of epic, Mary Queen of Shops, proportions. The décor has been totally re-arranged into a beautiful bright layout, my special favourite being the knitted cuties on the community board, and with the refreshing orange colour range it's a sunny delight to sit in - in spite of this rainy demeanour Leeds has developed.
I know appearances don't make up for everything, since all that glitters is not gold, but that's not where the improvement stops. This time I opted for a ciabatta sandwich, as did my friends, and it was a delight. The bread was deliciously fresh and it was really reasonably at about £2.20 for a tuna mayo ciabatta scenario. The café proudly has signage displaying that they bake everything in house, which of course is a further boon, and I'm sure my stomach is all the happier for it.
The chap serving, who is the same as on my prior visit, was just as awesome as the time before. So very friendly and welcoming, even offering to reheat my friend's chosen pizza slice up (they'd switched off the heated display unit) before we sat down. Further to that he went above and beyond to make our visit a pleasure, offering us a choice of sandwiches from the cabinet for a pound as it was coming to close, even throwing in another tuna may ciabatta for free!
And, the generosity didn't stop there. To let us know he bakes the cakes in house he even sliced up three generous portions of their home made carrot cake for us to sample for free. Oh. My. God. That carrot cake was to die for! So soft, moist and spongy, complete with a light crust of icing sugar, which in effect candied the walnuts. Seriously, go back as soon as you can and buy a slice of that cake.
Now, the only thing left for me to re-try is the coffee. But if they rest is anything to go by, I feel I won't be disappointed!
Essentially, the sandwiches are grand. The cake is divine. And the service is ruddy top notch. read more
