I've been coming to this salon on and off for about 7 years, and it has always been a consistent, reliable choice. I came in today for a haircut on my long hair and had a good experience. I made an appointment, but they were able to see me early. There were no other customers at the time, likely because of the rain. I asked for about 2 inches off, and I appreciated that the stylist listened and did not cut off more than I requested. She finished my V-shaped haircut in about 30 minutes, and the cut looked clean. During the haircut, she asked if I wanted layers and I said yes. Looking back, that was my mistake since I usually do not get layers, and I wish I had skipped them this time. The inside of the salon is what you would expect from a typical Chinese hair salon. It looks fairly clean and is very no-frills. The total came out to $40 before tip. Overall, this is a solid spot I have trusted for years when I need a straightforward trim. read more

Like the previous reviewer says, if you live in the neighborhood, you can crawl out of bed on any given day and they'll gladly take you without an appointment. For $25, they'll give you a shampoo, cut and even flat iron your hair (if they are not too busy)- that means a lot for people with puffy hair like me! Ask for the owner, Melinda. Went there to get a haircut and I wanted layers on my hair. When I sat down, Melinda started chopping off my hair and went CRAZY chopping my hairs. I was so shocked because she kept chopping my hair to uneven layers. After 5 minute, she was done! 5 MINUTED HAIRCUT!! I didn't even want to ask her to fix it because it's already damaged. My hair is F up! I can't believe it. This is my worst haircut I ever got. Now I need to always tie my hair up to hide my hair. My hair that sat right above the small of my back with blond tips needed to be dealt with. Without an appointment, my best friend and I walked into the San Bruno Beauty Studio with hopes of a successful A-line cut and low and behold, I still come back every three months for a trim to keep my hair looking lovely and well-kept. Melinda cuts my hair each and every time and she remembers who I am. Recently, I got a trim and spontaneously decided to get red streaks. Melinda trimmed my hair then strategically started placing red streaks throughout my hair. She's just an absolute sweetheart and she makes sure you are completely satisfied with your hair before you leave. Because let me tell you, my hair came out an orange red and I was terrified. I asked her if she could darken the red and she just smiled and replied with, "Of course, we'll just put in a color treatment and it should darken up." The whole process took about two hours and the grand total $55 plus $15 tip (HEY! That's how much my weekly allowance for lunch is!), which equals a grand total of $70. Doesn't matter cause I walked out with a kick in my step and a smile that extended from cheek to cheek. read more

I give props that when I'm looking for a place to wash, cut, and dry my hair around 9:30am in the morning, this place is already open... So, I walked in and was acknowledge that i was there. There was already 2 ladies there before me... one were getting getting her hair perm and the other getting her hair dyed... the wait wasn't long. I liked Melinda who was the person that cut my hair.... funny how all the haircut stylist was all women. I have to say honestly, out of all the salons ive been to i have never been satisfied with any of my cuts. So i finally gave this place a try since my dad always comes here for his cuts. The owner Melinda usually cut my dads hair so i decided to go with her. She put up with a lot of my wants and needs without any complaints. Eventually she gave me a haircut i was actually pleased with. Melinda made me feel very comfortable under her hands. Plus, she talks to you and tries to get to know you better. I needed a haircut really bad so i yelped it and found this place. When i first walked in, the other two hair dressers just looked at me and when i asked for Melinda, i swear they just ignored me but i guess they did some kind of secret hand motion and she suddenly appeared. Melinda was really nice and you can tell she really knew how to cut hair just by the way she went about it with her scissors and comb. I was really happy with my layers. I dont know who cut my hair except it wasnt Melinda or Kelvin, however, i still liked it! I didnt know how i wanted my hair cut, except that i just wanted it shorter. It was a bit difficult to tell her what i wanted because i, myself, didnt really know what i wanted, so she said that she was going to do the same style my hair was already in with some layers at the bottom (i said i wanted a bit of layers) When she was almost done, i decided that i wanted more layers overall, and not just on the bottom, and she was happy to change it. She didnt talk much to me and I was perfectly fine wih that. It was oddly relaxing having her cut my hair. It took about around 30-40 minutes and costed $20 with a 3 dollar tip. read more

I've been going here for over a decade to get my hair cut done because Melinda knows how I want it and always gets it on point every single time. I've had the others cut my hair before and they always seem to disappoint me because they never cut it the way I ask then to. Same goes for going to other salons to get my hair cut done. I no longer live in San Francisco making it extremely hard to trust other hair stylist even in Los Angeles. I had my hair cut twice at two different locations in LA and no one can cut it the way Melinda does it for me. There isn't a language barrier because she speaks English quite fluently. Shes super nice and regardless of where I live, I still continue to go to her because shes the only one who has cut my hair the way I asked it to be cut and so far no disappointments. Ive read some of the other reviews and really, you just have to make it crystal clear how you want it cut and you get you ask. If you aren't clear they will cut what they assume is what you want. Over the years the price has gone up but still fairly a decent price. My cut use to be only 15$ lol but its gone up to $25 in ten years so not bad :) read more

Really awful woman's haircut. After reading what appears to be mostly positive reviews for this place and wanting to support my neighborhood businesses, I decided to get a haircut with Melinda. I seriously question whether Melinda knows how to cut women's hair. The more I look at my hair, the more upset I get and this is why I am compelled to write a review of my experience so others know that they may not get as good an experience as other reviewers have had here. I came in to get my long, Asian hair cleaned up with long layers, including getting the ends trimmed and thinning out my very thick hair to take some weight off. It is a straightforward haircut and it's harder to mess up long hair than short hair - so I thought. We discussed the haircut and I guided her when I sensed that she was going in a different direction than what I wanted. What I ended up with is too short, uneven, and clumpy top layers with a big chunk missing right in the middle of my head (pointed out to me by my bf), and long pieces of hair at the bottom that do nothing for me. The haircut is completely disconnected and makes no sense. I have no idea what she was thinking as I would imagine someone being paid to cut hair would put some thought into what she is being paid to do. Language wasn't too big an issue as I used simple terms in English. It was the execution that was very disappointing. Other info: Despite the information on yelp, this place does not accept credit cards. Also, other reviewers mentioned that Melinda is the owner, yet when I asked her if she is the owner, she told me "no." While she was cutting my hair, she cut her own finger with the cutting shears and had to run to the back to get a bandage. That made me feel uneasy as I would expect someone who does this for a living for this many years to be a bit more careful and have finesse with her hands. The two stars is because Melinda is nice enough of a person and the price is more affordable than nicer salons. However, this experience reminded me that you get what you pay for and I will end up spending more money in total getting my haircut fixed elsewhere than if I had skipped this place.
