    Delicious sushi

Table for 10! We opted to get Japanese food after a morning full of adventure. There was a small but mighty staff so service was as expected. It allowed up to talk about our morning experience and helped work our appetite! I didn't capture all the food, but we enjoyed four different sushi rolls, chicken and steak dinner combo plates and the kids had chicken teri & tempura plates. When we saw the tempura kids meals, I think that could pass for a satisfying meal for an adult as well at a fraction of the cost. The tempura had a good assortment of nice lightly battered variety of veggies and shrimp.

A Heavenly Contrast: Fried Banana Vanilla Ice Cream Delight in South Lake Tahoe If you're in Tahoe and craving a dessert that delivers on both flavor and texture, look no further than the fried banana. This treat is a warm, deep-fried banana--crispy and golden on the outside, irresistibly soft and gooey on the inside. What truly elevates it is the brilliant contrast of temperatures: the warm banana is nestled between scoops of cold vanilla ice cream, then topped with a rich drizzle of hot fudge.

On their specials. They had Sea Trout and Chu Toro. They both tasted like they were previously frozen. I also had the Tako Sunomono, which lacked flavor. The service from Makaturo was....uhm....OK at best

Overall the sushi was decent. The ambiance was super cute since they have seating around the fire pit so it does get a little toasty and the quality of service was good. Out of everything I ordered, the raw oysters were my favorite. The sauce was amazing and the oysters tasted really clean and fresh. The gyoza will be second. They had a nice crunch and the dipping sauce had a nice kick to it. The miso soup and sushi were okay. Unfortunately there was nothing special about them.

    Empty place setting.

Off of Route 50 in South Lake Tahoe -- A short hop from Heavenly Village - this is a place I have seen before but never stopped. But in the mood for sushi -- I did a quick Yelp search for places open - and here we go! The restaurant was inviting. Quickly seated and served by really kind and attentive staff - we enjoy some sake sashimi, gyoza, tempura vegetables and a roll or two. I had a glass of Chardonnay - everything was quick, delicious, and just right. I give top marks for quality and freshness, staff attentiveness and all around experience. All for a very reasonable sushi price point. We will be back - maybe this is our new South Lake Tahoe #1 sushi spot???

I then called the restaurant to ask if it was possible for them to accommodate 1 more small order since I didn't want my friend to starve and be left out. The young lady on the phone wasn't aware that she wasn't on mute and said "These 5 girls should've placed one fu**ing order instead of multiple". But logically, wouldn't one big order still take the same time as 5 separate ones? I understand that the restaurant was busy. I work in the industry myself. But this behavior was UNACCEPTABLE. She even asked my friend if she could order something easy such as a side of rice. Ok so if i wanted one bowl of rice why the hell would I even place a togo order for that? Once we got our order, I talked to the manager and he was shocked at what had happened. Please hold your employees to a higher expectation because as a paying customer, I wanted a refund but it was too late to ask. To the young girl on the phone if you're reading this, make sure you're on mute next time if you're going to talk sh*t!

Places like this that have limited seating and know that the wait is very long should have a reservation system. There were a good amount of tables open, but maybe they were short on staff since they were not seating people? We finally got to sit down and overall the whole experience took along time. Long time for waiter to come get our order and VERY long time to get our food so much so the waiter had to apologize (and indicated that they forgot if they had taken our order). The prices are a little high, but it's Tahoe so I guess that is a given. The rolls were ok. Creative but flavor was ok. Overall with the long wait and the mid flavor I would not come back.

It was my first time there, and my server Jamie was really friendly and helpful. He walked me through the menu, and I ended up going with à la carte so I could try a few things. The wagyu was delicious and cooked perfectly, and the cauliflower was amazing too. The Toyosu fish was really refreshing. I also thought it was really cool that they source fish from Japan every couple of days. That definitely shows the level of quality they're going for. I'll definitely be back, and next time I want to try the full course. The restaurant itself is beautiful overall. Only small thing for me was that it got a little smoky at times, and the wine tasted slightly old, although my server confirmed the bottle had been opened recently. It honestly may have just been the wine I chose. Still a great experience overall.

We spent around $700 for two people and it was one of the most disappointing dining experiences we've had -- not just in Tahoe, but anywhere near this price point. The food was wildly inconsistent. Several dishes were overly salty to the point where it completely overpowered everything else. Others were just forgettable (like the beet salad). For a tasting menu that's supposed to be carefully curated, it felt sloppy and poorly thought out. On top of that, the portions were tiny -- even by fine dining standards -- and we left still hungry, which is pretty unacceptable given what we paid. For example the fish was probably a 3-4 oz portion. Many of the dishes were the same size as the a la carte menu, but for the tasting were meant to be shared for 2 adults. That means you are paying 400 dollars for dishes that can be bought for 40 bucks on the menu. The exact same size.... What is going on.... Service was just as frustrating. It wasn't outright rude, but it was disorganized and careless in ways that really matter. We ordered an extra dish and no one bothered to tell us it was already included in the tasting menu -- so we ended up paying extra for something redundant. That's a basic failure and honestly felt borderline deceptive. Drink service was slow, and mis-timed. What really pushed it over the edge: my wife is pregnant, and instead of putting any real thought into substituting a raw fish/uni course, they gave her a duplicate of another dish already being served, and was a dish that we extra ordered. No creativity, no effort -- just the easiest possible workaround. For a restaurant trying to position itself as high-end, that's inexcusable. This place charges like a top-tier dining experience but delivers something far below that level. It feels like they're relying on hype and location rather than execution. Save your money. There are far better places in Tahoe (and beyond) that actually justify the price. Would not return.

That said, the Mango Sticky Rice was AMAZING--definitely the highlight of the meal and the one dish that really stood out. Service started off a bit rough.
