Updating my review just to rave even more about how dearly I love Samurai! My boyfriend claims their cheese rangoons are the best he's ever had, he also loved the chicken fried rice. I also tried the chicken lo mein and it's lovely (but note I am a lover of veggies, the more the better!) And of course I couldn't forget the spicy crab roll, amazing!! After moving from Southern California to Fargo earlier in the year, I had to try all the sushi places in town. Samurai has been our favorite. They are consistent with what they deliver, the fish is great quality, and presentation is beautiful. It seems in the Midwest people love their tempura, crab sticks and spicy-tuna...but anyone can make that. Samurai will let you substitute out crab sticks in their rolls for real fish. Many places around town won't let you substitute out. I'm impressed with the big the chunks of yellowtail in the rolls, and the options of fresh rolls on the menu. Samurai's menu is pan-asian with an emphasis on Japanese food. We warmed up with vegetable tempura. I was tentative about Asian food in Fargo but I was impressed. The tempura had a thin, even coat of batter and was cooked perfectly crispy. Our entrees were gigantic. I had the Singapore noodles. The noodles were thin, whereas they have been fat at every other restaurant I've eaten them at. Though I prefer the fatter noodles, the curry flavor was on point and the chicken was plentiful and juicy. I had enough for a big dinner and a big breakfast. My wife's garlic brown sauce broccoli and tofu was likewise plentiful, even if the flavor was a little dull. I don't have any other comparisons in town, but the food was fresh and the quality was reasonable. I was satisfied and would eat here again with no complaints. read more

Litterally the best Sushi in Fargo. Hands down. No contest. All you can eat sushi joints are fine but for exceptional sushi skip them and eat here. Eat here I command you! 5/11/20 I'm not sure what happened but we just picked up food to go (COVID-19) and it was just ok. When you eat in and order the Amazing roll you get a bunch of crispy tempura batter bits that you can swoosh around in the sauce from the roll and it's awesome! They don't give you any when you order take out. They also didn't include any pickled ginger or wasabi. Also, the house special fried rice was marginal. Not sure what they did differently but compared to the last time I ate in there it's no comparison. The rice was basically white rice with hardly any flavor. I can make better fried rice at home. Is there new management since I last ate there (probably 6 months ago)? I'm not changing the 5 star rating I gave them before as I've eaten there 50+ times over the last few years and always loved it. I'm chocking it up to a one time occurrence or the COVID or something. Samurai has quite a few common dishes you find at Thai or Japanese restaurants. Nothing wowed me but my friend was really impressed with Salmon.. She said it was not dry at all and cooked perfectly and moist inside. Softshell crab was surprisingly good but a bit sweet for my taste.. Chirashi sushi was far better than Sashimi Deluxe.. Tempura comes with 2 shrimp and about 4-5 kinds of vegetable. The best part is the portion size. All dishes are pretty big. I suggest you get a couple of dishes for 3 people and share. Price was a bit high for the area and Asian dishes but well... the portion size might compensate for that.. I would avoid Fried ice cream though.. PS: Often they are out of some ingredients so if you are in for a certain dish, call first to make sure they have ingredient to prepare. read more

I ordered take out and this was a very average or below restaurant. My Tom yum soup was bland. Mostly broth and zucchini sticks. I counted two sticks of carrots. No chills. Tom yum should be spicy and open a person up. I usually use it as a stuffy-nosed allergy-killer. I felt like I was drinking a can of broth. The salmon roll was below average. Very dainty. Less than the size of a quarter. Just rice around salmon, no other veggies inside. It looked like something you might get from a Japanese vending machine. Finally, i ordered the garlic vegetable stir fry. The veggies were nice and crisp, but the sauce was thick and syrupy. Like something out of a bottle. It's the type of sauce that's going to shoot through you in about an hour or less. Overall, I was underwhelmed for the price. It might be better if it was more in line with Panda Express prices. Samurai recently hired a new sushi chef a couple of months ago now. He is simply the best! Do yourself a favor and sit at the sushi bar, talk to him and tell him to make you something off the menu. We have done that the last several times we have been in and it has been, by FAR, the best sushi experience in Fargo. Plus he is super friendly and fun to talk to. Just tell him what you know you like or don't like. Just be a little open minded (usually a tough thing to do in this city). Of course he told us the names of all the things he has made but I can't remember. I never liked salmon sushi before he made us this salmon appetizer with orange and this garlicky, gingery sauce. It was unbelievable! For rolls he has made us a fairly simple salmon or tuna roll with a little something extra, but they have been so much better than I could have imagined I could get in Fargo. If you have never sat at the sushi bar, take a chance and do it! Or at least go and just ask that he make something unique for you. No way you will regret it! The restaurant itself isn't the best or classiest place, but the chef and the way he treats us will keep us coming back as long as he works there!!! read more

Honestly, the best sushi you'll find in this town. The chef, while a little difficult to understand (much like the rest of the staff), consistantly goes above and beyond by asking you what you like to eat and suggesting new options for you based on what you tell him. You owe it to yourself to sit at the sushi bar at least once to have this conversation with him. The staff is also extremely friendly and they are very attentive but not checking up on you at an obnoxious frequency. I will be coming back here for a very long time. Came here again and was happy with the generous portions for the chicken katsu and the chicken pad thai. Both tasted good and were big enough to share between two people, with some leftovers. We also ordered the Chicken Tom Yum soup, which I thought tasted off. Bang for the buck is what I'm talking about. I'm a fan of Samurai, let me tell you why. I have had sushi from coast to coast and on a couple islands somewhere. You know. You take it where you can get it. I'm not going to lie and say this is the best sushi I have ever had. That's because the best I have had is prohibitively expensive for my leisurely wallet, and I usually have to have some generous benefactor walk me through that kind of near-death experience. That being said, if you are a fan of the raw fish, and you want a nice, quiet, clean shop to pound a little bait into your face, Samurai can get that done. Short and sweet, Samurai is an excellent choice if you want to get a quick bite of Asian grub. If you are at work and have nothing better to do than read Yelp reviews, I can waste a bit more of your productivity. Two people (count 'em) can get a good deal of satisfaction out of one of Samurai's special rolls and their outstanding chicken fried rice. A meal and a couple sodas will make you and a date happy and all you have to do is hand out 25 portraits of that little cherry tree chopper. That's a pretty sweet deal. Nah... make it 30. Leave a good tip. The waitresses at Samurai are very nice. Be awesome. Listen, I gotta recommend the chicken fried rice. It's oily... east coast style. The way God intended it. The Black Dragon Roll is the real deal. The Godzilla Roll is a monster that'll smash your gustatory into history. Cream cheese wontons. Done. I know that sushi isn't for everyone, and sushi can be a very polarizing social subject, but I'm here to tell you that swiping a card at Samurai will put you in a pretty good position.
