But once he started at the Phoenix School, things turned around. He came home after the first day and said, "It's like the teachers aren't even teachers--they're just people!" The caring relationship with his teachers, the community at the school, the way his teachers push him to do more than he thought he could and support him as he learns to push himself has been amazing. He loves school now and is thriving academically, socially, and emotionally. The way they integrate learning across all their activities is special. Students learn all the academic skills throughout all their activities, along with specialized practice in, say, math or writing, especially as they get older. They also use the community at large as their classroom with frequent out-of-the-classroom learning experiences that engage students far more than anything I've seen at any other school. Teachers support students as they produce high-quality work, with autonomy and ownership over their own learning. Teachers are among the most dedicated professional educators I've ever met. They work hard to create a community of students, faculty, staff, parents, and community members dedicated to the well-being and education of students as complete people. It's not possible for me to say enough good things about this school.

Our daughter had been in different care centers before; more expensive and less nurturing than all that HCS provides. After 2 years our daughter has made great new friends, looks forward to school each day, and we continue to see her personality and skills grow. Being able to drop off my daughter and not worry that she is being safely watched with care is however the most important thing that HCS has provided to our family each day.

The teachers have kindly helped him transition to a group setting, build independence and make new friends. My husband and I live in Eastie and work downtown, and we feel privileged to be able to drop him off on our way to and from the T stop, following a nice walk through the park. The co-op structure welcomes parents in, to help out, but also to observe, which I find tremendously comforting. As a mom who also has a full-time office job, those days in the classroom are incredible. And unlike many preschools, Harbor City offers a schedule that actually works with my 9-5 hours. We'll be back next fall for pre-K!

He would complain that Waring had a self congratulatory attitude, but really was not that amazing of a school. The school takes the role of helping shape the children's character extremely seriously and it shows in the children as they grow through the years. The families that choose Park Street are exceptional and the community is second to none. The teachers and administration truly care about the kids and want them to succeed not only while they are students at the school but also as they go on to their next schools. My children feel extremely loved and valued. The curriculum is challenging and yet the kids truly love to learn and the staff have an incredible way of making learning fun. Her first interaction with Violeta was a picnic for incoming families, followed by an individual home visit by her teachers before the first school year began. From day 1, the teachers and students are not strangers, thanks to the introductory events. Here's how Violeta continued to support my child's development: The mixed-age model was very effective at giving her practice leading and taking leadership from other children. In the first year, she mimicked the advanced children and took interest in more advanced tasks. By her third year, she was proud of receiving the more difficult presentations from the teachers (like division) and assisting younger classmates in learning skills she was already proficient with (like tracing, grading colors, and phonetics). I am thrilled to see my daughter, at age 6, already has teaching experience herself. Setting the table, using a napkin to wipe her mouth between messy bites, doing dishes, washing napkins, pouring her own glass of water from a pitcher, sewing with a needle and thread, tying her shoes, preparing a snack for herself and a friend, planting and harvesting from the garden, asking for help and helping others. Every day the teachers did this with the children, so my daughter's life skills are second nature now. The teachers are very thoughtful in how they design and prepare the environment to allow every student to practice at their own level before advancing to more challenging tasks and skills. Perhaps most importantly, Violeta has cultivated my daughter's motivation to learn, her skill to learn through observation and hands-on practice (standard in Montessori), and her ability to focus. At home, she self-initiates projects and remains on task without losing focus. She is attentive to her environment, thoughtful about what is around her, and happy to spend a day without screens. Violeta does not use screens. The school offers many ways for children to experience all their senses: smelling distinct scents in bottles, listening to world music with headphones, tending to living plants and animals, exploring the outdoors twice a day, and working with natural materials like arranging flowers for display. With bilingual instruction reinforced by proactive daily practice (e.g., Spanish mealtime conversations, workbooks, audiobooks, bedtime stories and more) beyond school hours, my daughter's language development has thrived. She has learned to do math, read, write, and build relationships with all ages in Spanish and English. For her, fluency has been a natural outcome of bilingual practice at home and at school.

The staff at Plumfield truly sees the children and encourages and supports each one of its students' strengths and interests. They make learning fun while allowing ample time for socialization and outdoor play. Plumfield is a special place - whether your child is quiet or loud, sensitive or bold, artistic or sporty, there is a spot for everyone. The teachers are invested and I drop my children off every day knowing they are well cared for, safe, and supported. Plumfield allows its children to be who they truly are, supporting them wholly. I literally saw a sign, a lawn sign, and as soon as I pulled up the website I knew this was the answer. We went in for a day to check it out and participated in a class that asked us to write down emotions that were putting holes in our buckets. We then went outside and burned them in a fire pit. This was exactly the type of place I wanted my son to be. My son was stressed out about the grades and tests and homework at his public school. We loved that Plumfield doesn't "test" their knowledge but rather has them do narration for what they are learning, really thinking about and writing down or speaking what they've learned. Our son works through his math book at his own pace. Beyond the general academics Plumfield teaches scripture while allowing the children to share and have their own beliefs. I love that they do nature study, logic, and the arts (drama, music, acting, etc). And my son is currently working through 7 Habits of Highly Effective Teens which he has very much enjoyed. We love the "nontraditional" approach offering our child broader, life oriented lessons. The teachers have all been wonderful and supportive. The director John is an honest, wonderful man who has developed a loving relationship with my son helping him through struggles in his life. Our son says Plumfield feels like a family. We feel incredibly grateful that we were able to find this gem of a school for our son to finish out his middle school years. He is working with Plumfield to apply to St John's Prep for high school and we truly believe Plumfield has offered him the best preparation for his high school career.
