I have used both locally, most frequently picking the H up at Gilman so I don't have to bike up the hill. However, for the first time, I actually commuted into the city on the transbay bus line. It was friendlier, faster, cheaper ($3.50), cleaner, and cushier (with wi-fi) than BART. Although I am glad I am only commuting for the week (as I enjoy being able to bike to work in Berkeley even if I don't have the endurance for the return), it is nice to know getting to the city during commute hours is so easy. And it is nice that I can also ride it locally when needed ...

I had no idea what all this "AX" and "BX" Muni bus stuff was about until I moved to the Richmond…read more It turns out that these special buses are the closest thing to a BART train that the Richmond District ("RiDi") has. If you work downtown and live in the RiDi, you better get to know these buses, or you'll just be the chump on the regular 31 Balboa/38 Geary that gets the hour-long, reasonably stinky and ghetto tour of the city on the way to work. The 31 AX ain't great (I rarely get a seat in the morning, and some broads refuse to move to the back of the bus when it gets crowded), but it sure beats the regular 31 Balboa. FYI, the 31AX starts at the beach near the Safeway and the "Last local stop" is Balboa and Park Presidio. The next stop after *that* is Sansome & Montgomery. Not bad, right? Here's the weird thing though: I'm on the morning (and often evening) 31AX buses, with the same people, almost every day. All of us are going to our jobs in the FiDi or home to our bitchin' flats in the RiDi. I know half of their names since they all wear their hoity-toity company badges. Okay, you work for yahoo/stubhub/charles schwab! you're-so-fucking-cool-and-employed. We get it! But none of us ever talk to each other, even though we often see each other twice a day. This happened on Friday, October 19th around 6:15pm. It was slightly confusing which side to stand on. I actually first went straight to the bus stop on the north side of the street since that's the stop I saw. But my spidey senses starting tingling, so I looked closer on google maps. That's when I realized I should be on the south side of the street. It wasn't apparent that there was a bus stop there as construction is going on, so there's scaffolding all along the sidewalk. The bus ride itself was fine. From 14th and Church St, it's just a 15+ min ride to my friend's house in twin peaks. (I believe there were 24 stops on my trip.) The downside of this line is the bus only comes every 20 mins, so if you just miss one, you'll have to wait another 20. The bus itself wasn't very packed. Lots of seats, so I didn't have to stand. I believe this is the only option on muni to get to twin peaks. Definitely cheaper than a ride share as it's only $2.75. Decent option if you're not in a hurry.

When I first became a Muni freak five years ago, I would see this thing's route on the bus-shelter maps and think, "Huh?" It looked cool, but it would also require some time to ride the thing from start to finish and back again. Fast forward a few years. I decided to bite the bullet when I saw a 37 belching down Haight Street. I ran to Masonic and waited, catching my breath, for the bus to turn the corner. I continued to wait. And wait some more. It finally made the turn, and when the driver opened the door--he got out of the bus. I had hit one of its termini. So I got on and waited, and I wasn't disappointed. This is a crazy route. It goes every which way, and there were times at which I was actually close to my neighborhood but didn't know it. I recognized some street names, but I had never driven them, let alone walked or bused them. A half hour later, I got to the other terminus. This one is just below Twin Peaks. The driver was cool with allowing me to wait in the bus, so I did--and did almost the whole route in reverse. I rode this bus again recently, this time on one of the new hybrid buses, a mini version for this bus line's small streets. The experience was even more enjoyable, both because I had my dad with me, who loves this kind of stuff, and because the driver talked to us while eating his sandwich at the Twin Peaks terminus. If you're in love with public transit or Muni, or if you just want to see how the other 863rd lives, take the 37-Corbett.

Very reliable way to commute from Berkley/Emeryville to SF. Coming from an island in the middle of…read morethe Pacific, it's hard to tell how far everything is from each other on the map. Previous visits to northern California we have had a vehicle. Recently we had our shortest stop to the bay area and thought a rental wasn't necessary esp w/o littles tagging along. I'm the practical one, Mr. G on the other hand is the boujie one... when I suggested public transportation for the entirety of our travels, I really thought he'd never go for it! But surprisingly most times I suggested the bus/train routes on Google maps, onward we went! We were both pretty impressed at how decent our commutes were. Normally when you're on public transit you're "slumming it". These busses were a little more upgraded than ours back home. Cushioned seats, individual air spout above, pretty on time lol. The stop was right across the street from our hotel and from there went straight to the Salesforce Transit Center where you could easily transfer to other lines. The only confusing part at times were the charges per ride. Google maps lead us directly to download the Clipper app which is the digital card they use to pay for rides for the different lines throughout the cities. Supposedly there is a free transfer period and also day pass. Only one day I've seen my ride amount change for two different rides. For the most part the F bus to get to and from SF-Berkley/Emeryville costed $6 and arrived every 30 minutes. There was only one time we weren't able to snag seats and that was after the Giants game. So if there's a busy event, line up early to ensure your spot aboard the bus! All in all this wasn't an awful way to get across town. No need to worry about gas, parking or traffic. Save $, if you've got the time to spare waiting a bit and picking up more steps along the way. If you know SF parking and traffic, that alone would be enough to convince me to catch the bus, js.

Usually I'm not that impressed by AC transit or by any means of public transportation in general…read more Public transportation is a means to an end and I'm not quite the biggest fan of sitting next to individuals with funny odors or next to those who have to be touching when they sit next to you. Somehow, there's a lot of people that don't understand the concept of personal hygiene and like to sit next to me. But this review isn't about me. On the 4th of July, probably one of the worst days to ride public transportation, AC transit surprised me. Sure, the bus didn't leave exactly at 4:40pm. It actually left around 4:50pm. But the bus shepherds (what I call them because they herd the buses as if the buses were goats) made sure that everyone who wanted to get on the bus from SF to the East Bay got a seat on the bus. And trust me, there must have been around 50+ people in line. As a past youth sports coach, gotta love the team spirit!

The MB shuttle is FREE. Can I get an AMEN? Today was the first day and I took full advantage of it. There are several stops around the Mission Bay Area including UCSF, Berry Street, Walgreens, and Cal-Train. The Shuttle begins and ends at the Powell Street Bart Station (stop is by Walgreens on Market). Shuttle runs every 15 min - half an hour or so. You can find their schedule on-line. Basically it runs M-F from 7-10:30am & 3:45-8pm. Perfect for work schedules! Shuttle is very spacious with A/C and Comfy Padded Seats. It took me less time to get to Downtown than it was riding on Muni - obviously there are less stops. It is still fairly new so there are no permanent Mission Bay Shuttle Signs posted. There are just temporary ones or none at all, so I highly recommend downloading a PDF of their schedule and route. I am so thankful for this. It totally beats unreliable MUNI. Now, Baseball season and backed up trains, stuck trains underground, and MUNI fights are a thing of the past. Did I mention that it is FREE?

I have stopped using the Mission Bay shuttles after the schedule and route change that happened at…read morethe beginning of August. The accuracy of times and reliability have completely plummeted, and this is no longer a good service. I realize that the service is free so you can't really complain, but I just want to note my experience and say to not waste your time. You're much better off paying for another service than using this one. Route and Stop Changes - Caltrain to Powell stop has moved from in front of Walgreens to across the street in between 4th and 5th. - Powell stop has moved from in front of the Michael Kors store on Market St. to in front of Bloomingdale's on Mission St. Times The shuttles just don't come on time anymore. Also, the NextBus app is not tracking the times accurately either. There have been multiple times when the app said the shuttle is 2 minutes away, and the shuttle ended up coming 5-10 minutes later or sometimes not at all (I waited at least 10 more minutes before completely giving up). This combined with the new stops where I have to go more out of my way makes for a huge inconvenience when the shuttle doesn't show up, and I have to completely change my plans. The one time that the shuttle did show up (almost 10 minutes late), the driver did not pull up to the sidewalk. He stayed in the most left lane on Townsend and expected me to cross the bike lane and right lane to get to him during rush hour! WTF. After stupidly trying and almost getting hit by bikers, I went back to the sidewalk to see if he would move back over to the right lane. He didn't even make an attempt, so I walked away and headed to the Muni bus instead. This whole experience made me furious at the poor service and safety standards of the shuttle service now.

I took the first bus out on Saturday (9:30ish) from Sutter/Leavenworth and it took about 35 minutes to get to the Marin Headlands Visitor Center. I took the 2pm bus back from Field/Bunker Road. The signage painted on the asphalt is wrong so wait on Bunker Road just past the stop sign and wave at the driver so he knows to stop for you (closest stop to the visitor's center). Great way to avoid the hassle of parking, tolls, and traffic. I brought a book with me and the ride was great-amazing views along the way!

AC TRANSIT 800 LINE BUS HOT-LINE: 1-800-THS-SUKS…read more As you can tell from my title this is what I thought about this service. I will provide you the scenario. Last Saturday night I walked to the station at 1st St. and Mission St. At around 1:45AM the 800 Bus passed by this station. A man advised the passengers at this station if you want to take the next 800 Bus the best chance is to walk to the station around Sansome St. and Market Street. I walked with 3 others to that station. What happened next was an adventure I like to forget (great for writing a short story to be published on the New Yorker but not great for trying to get back home to the East Bay late Saturday night/ early Sunday morning which can be very dangerous). Below is my formal complaint to AC Transit which I emailed and consisted of two paragraphs: Last Saturday I had to take the 800 bus back to Oakland. I walked to three bus stops before I could take a bus that was not full back to Oakland. One of the stops that I am complaining about is around Montgomery Bart station, which was the second bus stop I walked to (Beale Street and Howard Street was the first). The bus arrived around 2AM. The bus was half full yet it passed every possible passenger at this station. Seven of us ran to the bus when it made a stop at a stoplight. The bus driver ignored our pleas of letting us in. The bus was half empty!! In summary a group of us walked to Market and 7th where we were fortunate to take the 800 bus at 3:30 AM. I arrived at my destination at about 4:45AM. My complaint isn't only this station but the 800 bus line service during late Saturday night/ early Sunday morning. There should have been more buses available during the weekend because the 800 buses become full to capacity. The main complaint is however at this station because I had to wait about another 2 1/2 hours before I arrived in Oakland. Arriving at Oakland around 4:45AM isn't the safest thing to do; I eventually found out the next morning that 2 people in Oakland were shot that night. That could've been me. It was irresponsible for that bus driver to pass by station at Market Street & Montgomery Street when that bus was half full. I am not only voicing my opinions here but at Yelp and other online reviews regarding the inept service of the 800 bus line last Saturday night. The last time I wrote a 1-star review was Chris Daly's Buck Tavern. The reason I reviewed it as a 1-star is because I don't personally like Chris Daly because of his political antics. However the review for the 800 Line bus is more warranted and justified.
