This is the only place I'll stop locally for my garden plants each spring. They have an enormous selection of vegetables, herbs and flowers, both annuals and perennials, flowing baskets, small trees and shrubs for landscaping. Their wholesale prices are great, some of the best you'll find in the area, and the quality of the plants is excellent. My tomatoes and peppers are thriving this year as always, and producing a lot of fruit. Their variety of herbs is impossible to ignore - chocolate mint, pineapple sage, and many different kinds of oregano are just some of the things I experimented with this year. It's impossible to walk out of Sammis' without loading up a whole cart of little seedlings - which are going to turn into some huge plants by the end of the season! Their flowers are gorgeous - I'm always especially impressed by the bright magnolias in a dozen different shades. They've also improved the labeling of the seedlings, so you can tell more easily which kind of tomato, pepper or other plant you're buying (they all look the same when they're five inches tall!).
I recently stopped back at Sammis' for some mums for the fall, and they had a great variety of colors and sizes at very fair prices (three large pots for $10, and they had some even larger ones for about $9 each). The man working (I believe he was one of the owners) told me he'd just sold a few hundred of them - for resale! So keep that in mind when you're buying your mums at the grocery store - save your money and go right to the source! They had some leftover herbs, flowers, ornamental cabbages, and huge hanging Boston ferns.
Sammis staff is always helpful and knowledgeable. I remember looking for something they ended up not having this past spring (Calendula) but I had a couple people looking around for me (it's a huge greenhouse so I can understand them needing to double-check). The owner ended up coming to me and apologizing that they did not grow any this year. Of all the random things I was looking for, that was the only one they didn't have.
They'll be closing for the season whenever the mums are gone, and I believe they reopen in the Spring some time around Easter/early Spring. read more
