The parking is ample, there are always caring owners who interact with their dogs (share poop bags when you're out) & strangers who drop off unused tennis balls that makes every dog happy. However, it's sometimes challenging when folks are unsure of their abilities to lead their animals or just learning how to navigate socializing a pup for the first time. Since Covid there have been so many new dog owners who are nervous about their untrained puppies & it makes for some nerve racking moments because the animals definitely pick up on their fear. Every park has their resident "crazy lady" & this one will attempt to get you to empathize with a series of poor decisions she's made in her life & tell you what's best for your dog (eg. will tell you that your dog can't bring toys into the park, only her pit bull can). Even though it's usually coming from a place of love /ego, it's as annoying as the coworker you just have to endure. Luckily, there's enough space to get away from her because she doesn't walk much and barely follows her four (that right!) dogs around screaming to the top of her lungs because she can't get to them in time. You can see her coming. All of her dogs are freaking out of every possible window in her suv while she parks in the handicapped spot & takes twenty minutes to roll out her car. I've witnessed her call the cops at least three times in the year where she pulls her best "Karen" out of the bag. She means well, even though there's a group of (20+) dog owners who alternatively go to Nutley & Newark because they are tired of her energy/ drama. They finally fixed the broken fence on Jan 2021. A tree took down a segment last year. After months of waiting for supplier's delays due to Covid the segment was replaced by Bergen County Parks. The weakened structure has several areas along the road that I zip tied because the horizontal bars holding it together has been stripped bare due to the many months without structural integrity.

I remember coming during the day when it was really quiet and almost empty. My daughter was able to play on the playground all by herself, which was kind of nice because she had the whole place to enjoy! Now, years later, I still find myself coming back to Brookdale Park. I walk and run here, and it's become one of my go-to spots for an outdoor workout. I especially enjoy walking in the evening. Funny enough, after all these years, this was actually my first time officially walking the entire park! There's so much space here. They have a running track, tennis courts, and pickleball courts. There's plenty of room for kids to ride their bikes, and there are open areas where people can play soccer, football, and other sports. I also love that there's plenty of grass and open space if you want to bring a blanket, have a picnic, or just sit and relax. There are also different events held throughout the year, which gives the park an even better community feel. Overall, Brookdale Park is just a really nice place to spend time. Whether I'm coming here to walk, run, exercise, relax, or spend time with family, I always enjoy being here. It's definitely a park I've appreciated over the years, and I'm happy to have made so many memories here.

In shared public spaces like this, especially in smaller gardens, it is important for any group, whether local or new to the community, to be mindful of the park's norms and not treat the small public garden like it's only for them. Many people visiting or living here may not be aware of how these spaces are typically used, so a little consideration goes a long way in keeping the park welcoming for everyone.

We brought a bottle of water for Ham, but it would be nice if they had water fountains here like they do at the other doggy parks. One thing I did notice this time though: the fence. Along one side of the fence, the bottom of the bars stick out and face in towards the dog run area. Just eye level for my little guy. It makes me nervous when the dogs are playing and run along it.
