EVMC has a 94-bed shelter that provides comprehensive programs and strategies for each resident. For many men facing challenges because of past substance abuse, criminal involvement, life changing events or simply a long life on the streets, it means a long road back and that journey starts here. EVMC does pre-screened of potential residents before enrollment. They are asked to be candid about the problems that resulted in their homelessness. Once at the facility, EVMC staff ensure that each resident comply with established rules. During their stay, all residents must work full-time and save 85% of their income. Some area churches has given bicycles, reflectors, helmet to help residents travel to these jobs. A New Leaf and EVMC believes that the key to success for the residents in re-entering society is providing life skills training, work assistance, counseling, socialization skills, food, basic needs and shelter. There are also Case Managers who work individually with residents to set personal goals and address their barriers in becoming productive and contributing members of society. This was a great event and it was well organized and well thought out. After a brief introduction from both charities and a little history of what their missions entail and what their goals are for the future, we were able to get out onto the main shipping floor and get to work. This event was to help to take Angel Tree cards and sort through toy bins in order to fulfill the gift "wishes" of the child on each card. Two toys were bagged for each child and placed into appropriate bins in order to ensure that they are delivered on time. This event was a lot of fun and would be a great work / church / group event for those looking to give back during the holidays. They also have United Way food sorting events hosted at some of their locations from month-to-month for those looking to volunteer throughout the year. Overall: A+ Great charities joining together for a great cause. It was fun, interactive and informative.

I had lived there since June 2025 with zero issues, but everything changed the moment my son needed medical help. On 9/24/25, I informed them that my 14-year-old autistic son had been admitted to an inpatient psychiatric facility for suicidal ideations. Only two days later, on 9/26/25, staff member Sofia Spanarkel contacted me demanding that I sign over his private medical records. House of Refuge is not a medical or psychiatric facility and is not covered under HIPAA, so I asked for their specific concerns in writing. They never responded. Instead, without warning, I was issued a 30-day notice to vacate on 10/3/25. After months of having no issues, the timing makes the motive impossible to ignore. It felt like direct retaliation for refusing to hand over my child's sensitive medical information. When I submitted a formal complaint to the director, Kayla Kolar, I was not met with any explanation or concern--instead, I received an email stating that all communication must go through their lawyer. For a place that claims to support families in crisis, this response was deeply unsettling. Families dealing with medical emergencies deserve compassion and support, not intimidation or displacement. No parent should ever feel punished for protecting their child's privacy. Based on my experience, I strongly warn other families to think twice before relying on House of Refuge.
