Presentation nice but lasagne was frozen in the middle! They took it back after no hassle and then it was burnt black! We would have got up and left if there'd been anywhere else to go. The barman and landlady remained rude to us for the rest of the evening. Avoid the Dog and Donkey in Knowle if you like anything resembling good service! I felt a little sorry for the barmaids, who were fine. Unfortunately, they didn't get a tip, which wasn't their fault that they work for such rude people. It's not often that I feel compelled to write a bad review on Qype, but these people really need to be friendlier to non-locals if they want to attract customers from outside the village.

We especially liked the sausage menu. It had about twelve different kinds of sausages on it from ostritch to duck. They allowed us to have a plate so that we could take food from our plate and give it to our daughter . some places don't like you to do this. The waitresses were lovely and although the restaurant was very busy they were very attentive as were the owners who were helping to serve as well, they also bought extra drinks over to the table rather than us having to move to the bar to get them. They have a few guest ales on at anyone one time from local brewereys. Our favourite was Tribute. The barman was very helpful and let us taste them before we decided which one to order. We returned again to the pub with a larger group a few weeks later and found the meal and service to be of the same high standard that we had encountered before. I would definitely recommend you visit the Dog and Donkey. It has to be one of the best i've been in, and i've been in a few south devon pubs!

I've stopped off for a snack or a quick drink a couple of times, and it's always really impressed me, and the lunch my parents and I had recently ranks as one of the best pub dinners the Andrews family can remember. Their crab sandwiches were fresh, as were the fish in their delicious creamy leek fish stew, while the ploughmans was huge. Desserts of chocolate and pecan brownie and banana fritters with toffee sauce were gobbled up. Ok, it's not cheap for a Devon pub, but the food is worth every penny - there was hardly anything on the menu I didn't want to scoff down. The pub itself is a charming sprawl of wooden rooms, and a small seating area out the front. It's homely and although the staff run a slick operation, they're still friendly and helpful. The pub was recently taken over by St Austell Brewery, so there's a good range of their beers, plus a couple of guest ales. This includes one local beer brewed in Branscombe. It's quaint, delicious, comfy and sits in one of the most stunning areas of the Devon coast. It is, quite simply, a perfect pub.

We had a bar snack sandwich each and was impressed by the staff and the quality of the food, so we had a quick look at the full menu and decided to book a table for that evening. The food is quite traditional, but with a wonderful eastern influence. Beautifully presented with fantastic flavours, every course was a delight and I thought the bill was very reasonable. I've certainly paid more for lesser fare than this! I would heartily recommend anybody who finds themselves in the Barnstaple area check this place out!

The first night we tried to come here (there's only two pubs in the village, see) they were fully booked for dinner. We got kinda excited at that point (places are rarely quiet because they're bad, after all) so we booked in for Saturday instead and toddled off to the other pub for the evening. When we arrived the next day, they didn't seat us for a while, then didn't take our order for a good half an hour (we didn't have drinks either). There were only two duck dishes left so the waitress had to check I could have that like I'd asked. I didn't want to point out that there'd been more choice if anyone had served us. She didn't ask how I wanted my duck until she came back, and she didn't seem to know what sides came with each dish. As it was, the sides of dauphinoise potato and green beans were very tasty. Starters sounded great. As we were by the sea, we had to have scallops, right? But mine were a little sandy, and the waitress looked shocked when I told her. Not wonderfully thrilled. But here's the thing: The main courses were excellent. Really really excellent. And the pub is lovely. Cosy, noisy, happy. Everything you want from a country pub. It occurs to me that they're so busy because they have massively useless serving staff. And too many of them as well so no one really knows what's going on. I don't think my experience was a four star one. My meal (and wine) was. But I like the pub too much to rate them three stars. Still, they need some better serving staff here, because that's really letting down the excellent food.
