The dancers were super professional, dressed elegantly, and really breathed life into the song that the orchestra (hired from a separate company) played. I paid a flat rate per dancer, which included the performance and 50 minutes of rehearsal time before the proposal to give the dancers a chance to rehearse with the orchestra since they had not worked together before; Urbanity Dance was worth every penny and then some! The final performance was exactly what I had envisioned, and I especially appreciated that the dancer who performed last (Joy) finished her solo with a "lyrical invitation" for my partner and I to follow her to the predetermined proposal spot - this aligned perfectly with the music as it was fading out, and allowed for perfect photography/videography coverage - plus the two of us were in such a daze as everything was happening that we definitely needed the clear guidance Joy provided. Big big thank you to my POC, Cayley, and each of the dancers who made this possible: Genny, Katie, Haley, and Joy.

The first class is a Fundamentals Class. It's for all levels but directed towards those who might have taken a beginner class before a dance and are dedicated to improving their dancing. I took a fundamental class on spins and turns and it was fantastic. I came out of it with some really useful drills to practice at home and some ways to connect with my partner through turning. The second class is a Beyond Fundamentals Class. It's for anyone who's taken a fundamentals class before and is comfortable with basic moves. The last beyond fundamentals class I took was on competing and it most of all encouraged creativity without losing connection or the feeling of the music. So much fun! Frequently, the teachers will stay for both classes and help out, even if they're only teaching one. They're happy to give personalized feedback on what you need to improve. If you're brand new to Lindy Hop, they're also planning on offering classes for people with no experience. I expect this to be pretty awesome. The teachers at BLH are seriously cool magical unicorns of lindy hop who really look out for their students and also the community as a whole. After every class, we all go to the bar talk about dance, opinions of the class, and get to know each other on a more human level.

They have a program called The starlight pass, that encourages you to retake classes, to earn credits towards a really nice jacket and also gives you an opportunity to look at the material with a new set of eyes. Coming in for a second time you definitely pick things up from a different angle and it's a great way to see how much you've grown from when you started. All of the teachers are great, they have a rotating schedule so you get a nice variety. The website is easy to use and they're good about responding to questions. During covid they've tried to promote virtual events which have been fun and looking forward to when the world opens back up again and we're able to dance in person!

I would recommend taking the class more than once before progressing because I felt like I learned so much the second time. Perhaps, it was my love of all things spandex or the need to finally live up to the Abba song my parents still sing to me, "Nina, the Pretty Ballerina," but I made the leap (pun intended) and signed up for the adult absolute beginner class. This class will not disappoint! The instructor, Claire, is a magic maker. She took a girl (ahem..me) whose lack of coordination has resulted in two broken arms (mind you, at the same time) and numerous other embarrassing moments and turned her into a girl who can now plie in front of a mirror without laughing at herself. I wish I wasn't moving this summer otherwise I would definitely continue the classes. Here's the low-down: Attire ~ Think yoga. You don't have rock the leotard like Beyonce but you can if you want. I wore spandex on bottom and a shirt or tank top on top. Show your calves and your feet. It helps to wear different colors - one on top and a different one on the bottom. This will allow your instructor (and you) to see when parts of your body move that shouldn't (i.e. hips). They sell ballet slippers at the studio. You can buy them there but you will have to sew the straps on at home. Color choices: pink and black. Demographics ~ As mentioned above I had none, I mean zilch experience with ballet or dance. There were people in the class who had some gymnastics/ice skating/ballet/cheer-leading/jazz dance etc... Ages range from high school students to happy retired people. Class sizes are usually around 10 but will vary. Mainly ladies who take the class but men are definitely welcome (there was one guy in the first series of classes I took and he was way better than me). Cost ~ I think I paid around $120 for 8 weeks or something like that. Well worth the money. Add the cost of ballet slippers if you don't have them. I was like this girl when I started: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l7fAvXH25Ng so if I can do it...anyone can do it!

They sometimes don't communicate when classes are cancelled or they send out a mass email, but some people are left off. I've made the trip into the studio more than once to find out my class is cancelled. They make numerous accounting errors. Don't give them your credit card for automatic payments! Actually, you might be better off not giving them your money at all. Last year they had a "youth company". They charged $150 in production fees in addition to charging for rehearsals. They did rehearse, but there were never any productions. They didn't refund our "production fees". There are some very good teachers, though, and they're the only reason I'm not giving this 1 star... However, One of their very best teachers, Miss Christina, recently left. If you like the teachers, I recommend finding out if they teach somewhere else. I reviewed this place in 2014 and gave it 4 stars because for a brief time it looked as if things were getting better. Sadly, they're not.

For whatever reason, for such a deep resume/repertoire Tony Williams and his staff CAN NOT pull of a recital. The show is always ridiculously priced. The show should NEVER cost more than $20 a ticket! They also should be able to tell you when your class will be on stage. It really is a pain to find out your kid already went on when you were told they were going on later based on practices. Also the "stage manager" really needs to tone it down. These are children. Not teenagers but small kids. They don't need someone yelling as if these were the Oscars. She seems to take the fun out of these events.

Sorta stiff and that, but once I get going... then I like, forget everything. And... sorta disappear. Sorta disappear. Like I feel a change in my whole body. And I've got this fire in my body. I'm just there. Flyin' like a bird. Like electricity. Yeah, like electricity." That's the kind of momentum you gain at Triveni, each and every class, with Neena di or with Tara. Sense of Discipline - guru Neena-di instills the values pretty clearly. There's a dress code, no leggings, no capris, nada. It's that simple. No cell phones unless it's a 911 type of situation...genuine in other words. Don't be late, don't talk while the other batches are practicing. No chewing gum etc. Self Esteem - she ensures that you are respected. Whether you're a beginner dancer, or a veteran dancer, you are given as much time and attention. The school offers Bharatnatyam, Kuchipudi and Odissi classes. Triveni is a not a school that runs like a busy business - their fees are reasonable, students from in and around colleges are given some concessions, and there's an annual affair where every single student gets to participate and feel good about their skills and talents. I wish Neena di or Tara moved to SFO. Schools in the Bay area are like the sweat shop assembly lines.......no heart! I've tried four schools here......they are all just ordinary schools who have lost sight of why they begun dancing!
