I had a wonderful time at a BollyX dance work out on Monday night. The instructors are very friendly, and emphasized smiling and having fun as more important than mastering the movements on your 1st class. It was a very fun time and a great work out! My back is a bit sore today, and I earned 5 Weight Watchers Activity Points for the 1 hour class - which for me is equivalent to walking 10 miles! No dance experience is needed to have fun & get a great work out from the class. (Trust me, I'm NOT a dancer.) The class I attended was a free promotion, but the normal rate is a reasonable $12 per class. read more

Time for an update!! Like my previous review states, this is still my new fitness best friend, my new fitness fiend if you will...or just my new obsession. Whatever you want to call it, I love BollyX and haven't stopped going to class. When I can, I try to go two to three nights a week. Now that I'm officially a BollyX trainee, I wanted to give more positive feedback. First off, classes are offered at The Dance Complex in Central Square, and are taught there by a few instructors, Fen, Dom, Nellie, and Liza (8:30pm Mon and Thurs nights). Classes are also taught by Anita Patel at iDance in Burlington. Dom also teaches at VIM Fitness, across the street from Dance Complex on Wed nights at 6:30pm. Classes are phenomenally invigorating. You get your heart pumping, your body moving like it's never moved before (in my case), and you have a blast dancing the night away to some awesome Bollywood tunes. I bought a 3 class pack (as mentioned in my previous review), and since then I haven't thought twice about going to class as much as possible (visit BollyX.com for new client specials!!). Then I sprained my knee and was out of commission...but I came back to BollyX ASAP, and got back on track. Each class is never the same. We start with warm up songs, then jump right in to the workout. My favorite part is still the performance segment of class. We learn a song twice, and then it's performed by the class split up into teams. We cheer each other on, and then we rock our BollyX poses too. Awesome sauce :) I love it. BollyX brings out the inner dancer in me...and works out muscles that I probably never knew I even had. The music just gets you going too...I found myself googling the lyrics to songs so I can practice on my own...haha. All BollyX instructors are amazing. They are supportive, positive, and they care about you. They want you to come to class and enjoy yourself and give it your all. I think this is dance fitness at its best - BollyX will give you a challenging but genuinely fun workout. If you take this class and don't have a perpetual smile plastered on your face the majority of the time, you may in fact be a robot. Bollywood based, the music is joyous and celebratory and the fitness format is very well designed, alternating between high and low intensity routines, with some toning to boot. I am so lucky to have moved to Boston just in time for the second annual Yelp at BollyX night. What a thrill! I was instantly attracted to the concept doing grad school at Carnegie Mellon, where our student population is about 30-40% Indian. Any chance our populus gets, they fill and perform privately choreographed routines that look amazing, fun, and channel buckets of energy, so I jumped on the opportunity to try it for myself. Once you get up the three flights of stairs to the attic dance room, the instructors waste no time to throw you into a routine; an hour long fast pace aerobics class with a focus on fun and bringing out your inner Bollywood movie star. Be sure to get into the rhythm, the crazy remixed music, the arm gestures, hey-ha at the right beats and striking the best pose at the end of each song. Believe me, it's worth it! You may come out exhausted [make sure to bring water, the water fountain is back down 3 flights on the main floor] but full of life and ready to take on the rest of the week or the rest of the weekend depending if you take either of the two instructors' [Fen or Dalia's] Monday or Thursday night class. Make sure to get competitive with the end-of-class dance-off [yea, you heard right] - a 90 second routine which the instructors show and practice with you a few times. Then it's time to show the other half of the room who is boss. [Don't forget the sound effects - the icing on the cupcake!] Also, for logistics, this complex is pretty fantastic, both instructors offer late classes [8:30-9:30 pm] which is perfect for the average working girl who powers ahead of her timeclock on Monday's and at a price you can't beat [for an expensive city like Boston, I can't think of a better hour price spent]. BollyX is amazing -- the new Zumba! I've been for two classes: one paid and one courtesy of Yelp. Both times I was astounded by the hardcore cardio workout (you work up a SWEAT) and the enthusiasm of the instructors. The steps are simple but fun and the time flies. When you've got about 15 minutes left, the instructors take you through simple choreography for a song, repeat it and then divide the class into two and you "perform" for your classmates in a large group. I thought it was great fun and everyone was super encouraging and supportive. Overall, great workout, great instructors and great music. Will definitely be back! read more

After hearing great things about BollyX from friends and getting bored with my winter gym routine (nothing seems to make the treadmill bearable for me), I decided to try out BollyX last night. I showed up finding a mix of newbies like me and happy regulars. Now I know why - it was such a good time! The music and energy were awesome, and I'm pretty sure we were all sweating within the first few minutes - so basically, you feel like you're in one big dance party, then realize you're also getting your butt kicked into shape. I walked out feeling tired and somehow more energized at the same time - that is my favorite post-workout feeling. read more

I grew up in India and have been dancing for Bollywood songs for a while now for fun. I was a bit skeptic about BollyX before my first class but was pleasantly surprised with the energy the instructors brought to the class, the moves and the kind of songs they selected. The best part is the gracious combination of "let's learn some moves" and "let's get some cardio". You will for sure sweat a lot and feel like you've danced for some peppy songs by the end of the class. This is NOT social dancing. The instructors are quite professional, the classes are fun and the deals on LS and Groupon make it more affordable. The classes are mostly full but they have a couple of instructors in the centre of the class for the back row folks. Good thinking BollyX. If you are planning to dance for those old Bollywood songs where the guy and the girl run around an apple tree until sunset, this is not the place. read more

The instructors are awesome - they really get you going with the great music and moves! They are talented and make it look so easy but they do all the moves with you. Most classes are packed so it makes for a very sweaty class but everyone is having fun and burning calories. The class is good for all abilities and super fun! I would rather do BollyX than Zumba ...even though I totally have 2 left feet - lol :o It's great because I would think that you would get a really great workout at any level because it's fast-paced and you can adjust the intensity depending on your experience. The class is so much fun - the hour goes by fast. I have only gone to Mondays but happy to see that it's expanding into other nights. Don't forget to bring water - you will need it during and after the class! read more

So much fun! Prior to taking BollyX at the Dance Complex tonight (Dalia D.), I'd taken a try-out class at Newton Community Ed. (Lakshmi K.) and a free class at the Hudson Guild in NYC (Danny C.), and loved them! The Dance Complex class was by far the highest-intensity, with the greatest focus on accuracy of movement of the three I've taken. Dalia's enthusiasm was great, and her class mixed in a lot of hip hop. Lakshmi's class involved more classical Bollywood movements and even incorporated some of the facial expressions to go with them, which was awesome to learn! Danny's class wasn't as specific with the choreography, but was high-energy and really fun. I really enjoy BollyX and am glad to have a new danced-based form of exercise to add to my regimen! I purchased a 3-pack of BollyX classes at Dance Complex, so I will definitely be back! read more

This class will kick your butt while tickling your ears with the pumped up music and the enthusiasm of the instructors. I don't think I've ever seen instructors get so hyped! Quality of instruction: Great with showing each move slowly towards the beginning of the class and then amping it up later on. You can tell they've really been thoughtful on how to "teach" moves while also not boring regulars. Atmosphere: Super energetic and enthusiastic, if you haven't gotten that already! Space: Dance Complex is dance institution of Central Sq and that said, no AC! But the air flow is good and even with a packed room on the 3rd floor, the only reason I wanted to pass out was because of the high level of cardio. The complex also has changing rooms/bathroom, so you can do a quick change there. If you love to dance and you are up for trying the next Zumba - try this class! read more

Don't ever do the instructor training. The instructors are cliquey, discriminatory against people with disabilities, and bullies. They play favorites with other instructors who attend their classes as participants. The BollyX program itself is great, but I was left with no choice but to leave after the way they treated me. read more

I went to a free Yelp class here taught by Fen and Dom, and it was so intense and so much fun!! Dom was super enthusiastic and motivating, and made you want to just go all out with your moves. I did not expect the dancing to be such a workout, I'm a moderately active person myself, and I've been to some dance workouts before that were a nice change from the gym routine but not such a good workout. Twenty minutes into this class I was drenched in sweat, and forty minutes in, I thought it would never end. The moves were also just so joyous and exuberant that you couldn't help but have a good time. There is a lot of jumping, raised legs, squatting, and raised arm movements, so you definitely get a total body workout. I would definitely come back, even if I have to pay $12 for it! read more

I have attended BollyX, Zumba and other dance workouts at various locations by various instructors. This one is the best. Studio at this location is a bit hot as there is no air conditioning, but works perfectly almost like hot yoga. If you are looking for a fun cardio workout and love dancing, this is the place to be. Dance fitness at its best. I went to a BollyX class at BSC Downtown Crossing led by Dom, who absolutely crushed it as instructor. She kept the energy up, was easy to follow, and was an incredible dancer. I will definitely be returning to another one of her classes. Overall, it was a great workout. Different types of Bollywood dancing work different parts of the body, so you're sure to leave exhausted. For example, some of the Bhangra dancing requires a lot of jumping and huge arm swings, while some of the more traditional dancing requires squatting and more precise movements. I used to be on a Bollywood dance team back in school, and BollyX has allowed me to return to something I love to do. read more

I love group fitness classes and Bollyx is by far the most fun and physically-challenging dance fitness class I've ever been to! Fen and Dalia are great instructors who have a ton of energy and are passionate about what they do. Bollyx is a great workout and will definitely make you sweat. One advice that I have for the instructors is to introduce new dance routines occasionally to keep things fresh for regulars. read more

What a fun time! BollyX will have you moving and on your feet the whole time, giving you an awesome workout. What's really important though, is the fact you won't even realize it! I'm a huge Bollywood movie fan, but am sincerely terrible at learning choreography and dance moves, so I delayed trying BollyX until today. Anyway, it's as fun and low stress as reviewers say. Ritika was fun and sincere. It wasn't as intense and sweaty as step or zumba (just an observation, not a complaint). Please try BollyX if you are dying to try it yet also dreading it. read more

I previewed BollyX in San Francisco this past weekend at the JCC. I haven't been this excited about a new fitness concept since Spinning! (I'm a former Spin instructor) This is a great workout, super fun music and movement and the energy in the class is infectious! Great cardio class and unique. Anyone (even white girls who can't dance like me) who loves all kinds of music and fitness classes should check this out. 3-4 years later and I keep coming back to BollyX, specifically at the Dance Complex. It's all because of the OG kickass instructor/master trainer: Fen Tung. BollyX is a Bollywood-inspired dance fitness class. Having taken Zumba for a year prior to trying BollyX, I felt pretty OK venturing into another dance-based class, but to different music. The class was tougher than a lot of my other Zumba classes, but still so much fun. BollyX is very well-thought out. It's essentially a HIIT class with high and low intensity cardio routines interspersed throughout, with one or two songs focused on upper and lower body strengthening. The songs are super catchy: cycling between Bollywood, Bhangra, and classical Indian folk. You get to see the intricacies and nuances between each of the styles, all the while sweating, smiling, and posing throughout. Routines are relatively easy to follow and instructors provide visual pre-cues a count or two earlier to prep you for the next steps. They also tell you to "unleash your inner rockstar" and hold a fierce pose after each song. But I am awkward. So, I don't always do this part, at least in the beginning half of class. By the latter part of class, I've sweated so much and am having so much fun that I pose with the best of them! The last routine before the cool-down is a performance song, averaging 90 sec long. The class is split into 2 (if it's a large class), and one group performs as rockstars while the 2nd group cheers them on as the audience, then they switch roles. Finally, one more performance as a group and don't forget to hold your pose! Fen will call you out if you don't (teasingly and all in good fun because she knows you're a regular)! This community of instructors and participants are all truly fantastic. They genuinely want you to have fun in class and work hard to make that happen! When I travel for work, I always search for a class in that city. BollyX is a significant part of my routine now. The BollyX team are all hardworking hustlers. I found BollyX on a whim through LivingSocial 3 years ago, and Minal (cofounder) emailed me to let me know my classes were all set. In the first few of Fen's classes, Shahil (cofounder) was at the Dance Complex checking students in, taught a few routines, then saw him updating Quicken on his laptop while sitting in the stairwell until class was over. Fen and Dalia were (and still) constantly teaching demos in studios all over Boston promoting BollyX. To this day, Dalia's class still makes me feel like I've smoked 2 cartons of cigarettes because she brings so much enthusiasm and intensity that I always try to match her, but not as gracefully and always wheezing to catch my breath, such a good workout! Then there's Fen; Fen is a beast. She teaches the choreo clearly whether it's BollyX, Zumba, les mills, etc. She is one of the best group fitness instructors I've ever had! You're lucky if she teaches at your gym. And she she might because she is superwoman. Fen teaches BollyX exceptionally well and makes sure it's safe, effective, and fun for her students. I've definitely gone out of my way into the 'burbs for a Fen Tung BollyX class. With this hardworking group here in Boston and in NYC HQ, I don't know when y'all sleep, but love the community you've built! read more

Was just at BollyX's Boston Wednesday evening class today, led by Dom. It was FABULOUS -- absolutely loved the instructor's spunk, and it was apparently just her 1st time leading! Tons of calories burned + tons of fun had! I was visiting with a Living Social deal, but the regular price too seems reasonable for the experience. Loved it!! No dance experience needed, as long as you feel you would enjoy Bollywood music/dance and are up for some fun and exercise. (Just a piece of advice to girls: let your hair out at some point in the class to feel like an Indian goddess. Hahaha!) read more

Went to my first BollyX class on Monday night in Cambridge - it was so much fun and a great workout. The music was good and the instructor was super upbeat and motivating. The dancing was easy to follow along with. By the end I was pouring sweat and exhausted and was sore for the next few days (mind you I workout regularly). I have been a long time fan of Zumba and was presented with a chance to try BollyX at my gym (Boston Sports Club, Davis Sq. Somerville, MA) What an AWESOME treat it was. The instructors were uplifting and never stopped smiling. The smiles felt genuine even when I messed up every dance move and looked like I was about to pass out from exhaustion. However, it was amazing! I never once stopped smiling and absolutely loved the performance piece at the end because it felt like the entire class and myself worked together as one. The instructor explained at the beginning their goal for the feeling of community within the workout and I very much felt that. I can't wait to attend another class! I hope my gym will consider adding this course to their line up. read more

I did not know how wrong I was until I bit the bullet and tried out BollyX. It's some crazy cardio, kids. You like sweating? BollyX (also, you can crank it down and modify to wherever your fitness levels are) You like awesome music? BollyX You like being surrounded by people having a great time with big silly smiles on their faces? BollyX is awesome! Such a fun workout as it is a total break from my normal running / yoga / weights routine. Had the time of my life at this past Monday's Yelp event! I've honestly never had so much fun exercising before. I came into the event expecting to learn some basic Bollywood-inspired moves. I left with my mind and calves blown. Literally. I pulled both of my calves. The workout was so fun but also so intense. I had no idea that I could run out of breath in 3 minutes! There were so many instances where I wanted to take a break and give up but I couldn't bear the idea of missing out on their sweet dance moves. Our instructors, Fen and Dom, were fabulous! They had really awesome, positive energy and super cool moves! I'm dragging my roommates out to get a 3 class pack for their Bollywood classes. They sell each class individually, which are well-priced at $12/class...but the endorphins you get at the end of the workout are priceless :P. If you decide to go remember to stretch and bring water! the instructors have tremendous, admirable amounts of enthusiasm, energy and warmth. the dance workout is bollywood style in all its variety and high energy with a good progression from warm up to different, repeated choreo to cool down with stretching. i think this sequence is very important for effective and safe exercise in general. the only thing i would say, not necessarily as a critique because i only had time to attend a few sessions, but rather as a question is whether the same choreos are repeated at every class session. as someone who has more of a dance background, i would enjoy the challenge of mixing up and learning new choreo. read more
