Although I can definitely vouch for the warm hospitality and great color products, I was very disappointed with my haircut at this salon. Disappointed is an understatement. I was very specific about what I wanted, I painted a very vivid picture - it wasn't complicated. I expected a lot more from the stylist who claimed he had many years of experience. What I got in return was a blunt and heavy cut with no style - I asked for a trim but he ended up taking off a good two inches plus. Totally butchered it. My long-flowing locks are no more. Now I have no choice but to let it grow out for the next few months to get it back to the length I had it originally. The color was good. At least. But that's the easy part, let's be serious here. read more

I been getting my hair done by Bernie here, and I couldn't be happier. He pays attention to what you ask for, makes helpful suggestions, and ultimately does what you ask and not just what he thinks. The scalp massage during the shampoo is also amazing. I also really love the space: open, bright and what I like to discuss and parlour-nouveau. So even waiting for your appointment is relaxing and chill. Overall, this is one of the best hair salons I've ever been to, and I hope they're around for a while because finding a salon this good and chill is something that can take years. read more

It's taken me years to find a salon that can (1) listen to what you ask of them, and (2) provide some helpful feedback on what might actually be a good or bad idea based on the shape of your head, hair type, etc. I've been going to Salon Sweet William since shortly after they opened, and I haven't gone anywhere else since. In fact, 've referred several friends and they've all become loyal customers, too. The atmosphere and staff/partners are as trendy as the neighbourhood, and their sense of style really informs their approach to hair styling. They're also very good at making you feel comfortable, at ease, and at home. Whether you're waiting for your turn or in between phases of the cut, you can enjoy a nice coffee, great magazine reading, and trendy tunes. They're line of Kevin Murphy products are also better than anything else I've tried (KMS, etc.). So as far as trendy but non-pretentious salons go, it doesn't get much better than this. read more

I was visiting Montreal and needed a haircut really badly and found this place on Yelp and base on the reviews, decided to give it a try. I definitely made the right choice. I went for hair cut with Bernardo. He's really friendly and make me feel at ease immediately. We had a good funny conversation about places to go in Montreal and the culture of city. Before starting they gave me this hospital robe thing to change into so I wouldn't get hair on my clothes, which I thought was pretty cool and thoughtful. They also made me a very nice latte. The haircut experience was good too, Bernardo listened and gave me feedbacks on how it should be cut and styled, and also recommended me some products to take care of my hair. The end result was a very good cut and a satisfied customer. I really like the overall decor and vibe of place as well, it's a open space with good natural lighting and the vibe is friendly, relaxed and unpretentious. I will definitely come back if I'm in Montreal and need a haircut! read more

If you're looking for an intimate, chic salon with personalized, professional service, look no further. Salon Sweet William is comprised of three excellent stylists with years of professional experience under their respective belts, that came together to form their own salon. The location is super convenient (right in between the Plateau and Mile-End) and the salon is beautifully decorated. Getting a cut there feels like a visit with a friend in a super beautiful apartment! I've been seeing Bernie for probably close to 10 years now (though every kind of length, cut and colour!), but you could expect the same excellence from Trent and Samantha as well. These are all pros with an established clientele for a reason. Go! Your hair will thank you! read more

This review is for Trent Lowther at Sweet William. Trent is one of the partners in this intimate, original Mile End business that reads more like a stylish photographer's loft than a traditional hair salon at first blush. The lack of an old-fashioned, see-and-be-seen wall of windows between stylist's chair and sidewalk is one of my favourite perks here. You can watch Saint-Laurent Boulevard flow by from Sweet William's expansive second-floor perch, but Saint-Laurent can't watch you. You will get used to their lack of a street-level façade in about two seconds. Trent is equally comfortable sizing you up and suggesting a cut that might suit as he is following more specific requests. He graciously looks over the Instagram hair photos I bring in from time to time when a less considerate fellow might judge. I have trouble describing hair with words, but this has never been an obstacle in communicating my wants. His presence is comforting and thoughtful, and his men's hair craft is top-notch. Stylish magazines to read; the pitter-patter of tiny feet from the ballet studio next door; hot drinks from local roaster Café Union; a well-chosen, but pleasingly spare assortment of furniture that keeps this space attractive but still airy. Un incontournable du Mile End. read more

I came here to get my hair cut on a recommendation despite having to pay slightly more than my regular downtown stylist (whom I adore but, frankly, his style was getting a little humdrum for me). Did I leave beaming like a kid who just won a curling tournament? The answer is yes. That visit to Sweet William made me a believer -- that stylists aren't all the same, and they don't have to stick to template cuts to make clients look good. For a gawky and apprehensive person like myself, I had no qualms leaving my head in their skilled hands because they make you feel at home. They'll ask you questions and listen to your concerns to make sure they're on the right track. I think fees are fair for the neighbourhood (~$70 for a ladies' cut); you can get a $15 haircut in Chinatown but you'll get what looks like a $15 haircut from Chinatown... But getting your hair "did" in this sunny, airy loft is much nicer than a tiny fluorescent-lit shop. read more

First visit with stylist Bernardo: 5 stars +! Great vibe in the salon and Bernardo is very talented. My blonde hair has a tendency to be an orange hue when dyed and Bernardo nailed it! Just the right tone. My cut was also equally well done...This salon is a find and Bernardo is a gem! read more

I'm totally a fan. Bernardo is my guy, he's super friendly and very good at what he does. As the three main stylists here are all co-owners, they are very dedicated to their craft and to their business......Dependable, affable and committed to their clients. Plus, as other reviewers note, its a fantastic space -- huge, open, chilled, not at all the claustrophobic onslaught of hairdryers you get at many salons. The products are great too - I'm planning to buy conditioner there at my next appointment. they use and sell the Kevin Murphy range which is paraben-free. I've recommended this place to friends -- price is reasonable for the area & service too. See also: about 15 "filtered" reviews. I've heard the colorists are AMAZING, but the female co-owner is pretty horrible. I was recommended this place by a girl who gets her hair colored there, so I set up an appointment. While the salon itself is stylish and charming, the hair cut I received was less than stellar and not at all what I wanted. After emphasizing that I was growing my hair out and wanted only a an inch off, AT MOST, she chopped off at least 3 inches stating that long hair wasn't a good look for me. She also proceeded to "fix" my bangs, which in my opinion needed no fixing at all (i LOVED the way they were cut). She cut them so far back that it took MONTHS to fix and grow to look normal. For the amount she charged me, it was ridiculous. If the cut wasn't bad enough, her condescending attitude will make up for that. She spent the whole cut talking about herself, how successful she is, etc. The one question she did ask was what my summer plans were; i told her I was going to Vegas to which she let out a loud sigh and proceeded to tell me that she "HATED people that were into Vegas". Way to make the client feel good. Overall, the colorists are great, but the she is to be avoided at all costs if not for the cuts, but also to assure that you won't have to listen to her negativity for an hour or so. read more

My search is finally over: Kat at Sweet William Salon is worth my two hour drive from Vermont. She brings over seven years of experience to the salon. Her love of her job, her skill and her personality create the perfect conditions for her clients. This unpretentious, artfully designed salon makes you feel more stylish just being there. And with stylists like Kate, you will look more stylish when you leave this sweet salon. read more

Bernardo is the best colorist I have ever tried. Not for free, but worth every cent. Look and feel like a million bucks at this charming hidden treasure of the Mille End. read more

Sweet William is the best! Great coffee and music creates a warm "homey" vibe. Samantha is a very talented hair dresser and a fun hang. I have been a regular for over three years and I get compliments on my do all the time. read more

Love this salon! Visiting Montreal and needed a cut... Found this salon on Yelp... Well represented by 'yelp-ers'... 5 stylists with great customer relationships. I observed each stylist sit down and chat with their client, assess hair and discuss styles, colour etc. Clients were offered a beverage and received focused attention. The atmosphere is friendly and relaxed, the clients served by professional staff. My stylist was Kat... New to the staff, but not to the profession... Fabulous cut and colour. When I plan my next visit to Montreal, I may just plan it around my hair... I would love to go back, wish it was closer to me. read more

This is the best salon because there is no need to look for something better. This review is for Karen Allan. I had a perm last year at a different salon which made my hair super damaged specially on the ends and the previous "salon" I went to for a trim ruined my bangs. I was in desperate need of RESCUE and I wanted something that would give me a different look but at the same time nothing too short or too layery (because my curls were frizzy and unmanaged). It was my first visit and Karen instantly made me feel at home. She listened to me on what I was invisioning and I showed her some pictures and she came up with a cut that not only suited my and my permed hair but also of the perfect length n style. She was magical with her tools and the result was amazing. With every cut she would explain to me what she's doing and why. And we talked of other General stuff which made time fly so fast. It was like as if I knew Karen for a long time. The ambience is very personal and cozy. The cut she gave me was exactly what I was hoping for and I got many compliments at work. I also managed to speak to Bernardo regarding Keratin treatment for the hair and he was very informative. Moreover, I absolutely appreciated how this salon doesn't "push" you into buying their hair products. I was simply told what they sell, and they left it to me if I wanted to buy it or not. If you want a unique experience and a stylist that will not let you down.. this place is THE place! read more

Going to this salon was by far the BIGGEST MISTAKE I have ever made. It will take at least 2 years to outgrow this hair disaster!!! Bernardo did exactly what I explained I did NOT want done. My hair was perfect when I went, it just needed some root touch ups, instead he died over my entire head and I left looking like a brassy penny!! And when he tried to fix it, he left the bleach on so long that my hair was practically see through with major breakage and I looked like Cruella Deville or a tiger because of the massive stripes which were supposed to be highlights! I wish I could go back in time and not have gone to this salon. I've had bad hair experiences but this experience was all of them combined into one. My friends were appalled when they saw my hair. I would do anything to go back to how my hair was before I went to Salon Sweet William. Also, they try to sell every product that they use in the salon, super annoying. (I dont even give them 1 star but in order to post this I had to.) read more

I've never written a review before on a business but I feel Salon Sweet William deserves it. Bernardo gave me the hair and look I've always wanted. He was extremely friendly and knowledgable and ended up giving me by far the best colour/cut I've ever had. On top of that , my hair has been extremely soft and healthy since my visit. All in all this was the best salon experience I have had in Montreal. I recommend anyone who wants amazing hair to go to Salon Sweet William :) read more

i got a haircut here that i really don't like, paid waaay to much for. and guys, if you're going to charge that much for a haircut maybe you need to work on your charm. not the friendliest place ever. the room is cute. that's about all i liked about the experience. will definitely not be back. so disappointed. read more
