If you're coming from downtown like I was I highly recommend taking the ferry to Coronado it's very walkable and a lovely trip. They do walk-ins as well as appointments. Breezy open atmosphere, comfortable and clean. I went in for a basic haircut with Juan, booked online. He did do a mask treatment which really improved the texture of my hair. The look and location of the salon are amazing, the inside is open and has a very clean aesthetic. I've never had a bad experience here, everyone is extremely nice, even the other customers. The owner is wonderful and such a sweet woman with such good energy. Cannot recommend enough! PSA: if you have curly hair you absolutely need to go here, and ask for lauren pace . She has been my stylist for over five years now and she is the only person I trust to do my hair, as a curly headed girl too she just gets it, she's amazing at styling and so so nice. I love getting my hair done at Salon On First! All of the stylists are welcoming and fun to be around...as well as the music and atmosphere ! I'm very picky about my hair and Marilyn always makes sure that I am happy before I walk out the door. If you need your hair done on short notice, and your regular stylist is busy, they will work amongst each other to have someone help you. I usually have Marilyn do my hair and I've also had Elaine, who is truly a fabulous hairstylist. Was willing to try this salon since I love Coronado Island. Tried a random stylist who proclaimed she had done hair for 40 years and was great with color. Took her for her word. I explained that my hair was very fine and brittle. Also explained exactly what I wanted and she said she understood. She didn't. It was like she wasn't listening. She did not know what she was doing. Wrong highlights, wrong low lights. Terrible. She had quoted one price initially and changed to a higher price after she was finished. Just so unprofessional. The owner was willing to fix the problem but for a pretty hefty charge. Should have been for free. Not. good experience. Probably some good stylists at this location. Faith is an excellent colorist. I interviewed several colorist in lots of areas around San Diego. After hearing a lot of "beauty babble" from many colorists, Faith's no-nonsense way of communicating what was possible and how she would achieve it was such a relief. She listened carefully to my ideas and requests. She did exactly what she had described and the results were what I had hoped for. She took my color for cheap-looking bleach blond to rich looking deep and dimensional blond. I highly recommend Faith for color. The only reason I don't give the salon five stars is that for color lasting more than two hours, you may have to go out on the street with foils on your hair to move your car to avoid a ticket; Also, the salon is not as welcoming as my previous salon: no one greets you upon arrival, makes sure your comfortable and offers you something to drink. I guess I became a little spoiled for that at my previous salon in Hillcrest. With a little attention to these small details, I think Salon on First be fantastic. I loved my previous salon in Hillcrest, but the colorist was in a rut and kept giving me the same highlights (despite me asking for something different several times) and the stylist hadn't given me a good cut for over a year. The last one was so awful even my husband noticed and commented. It had to be corrected by another stylist at a different salon. read more

Marilyn is worth every penny! Not only is she incredibly sweet, but she really takes her time to make sure you are getting exactly what you hoped for. She gives amazing shampoos (she'll even spritz your face with rose water, or do essential oil eye pads for you while you lay there) and when she's done updos/fancy styles for me they have turned out SO dreamy. I've always found it challenging to find stylists who can do natural looking blonde highlights and manage my extremely thick hair, but Marilyn is excellent at both.
