With the glowing reviews and 20% discount, I came here looking for a new place to get my brows done. Verrry small place; there were only 3 people there - a hair stylist (using 1 of the 2 stations there), the receptionist/owner/waxer (Mina), and a customer getting her hair did. Cute place, but I was a bit turned off with the waxing room. It's also teeny, just space for a table to lie on with a little standing room for Mina. That's fine, but it just wasn't super clean. When the old paper on the table was pulled off, I saw stains and general wear & tear before new paper was pulled over it. (Note to management: this can be solved by just keeping a clean white sheet draped over the table so customers never see it. Just pull the paper over the sheet.) The bookcase holding waxing materials looked like it hadn't been given a deep cleaning in some time, which made me glad that Mina did my brows via plucking instead of waxing (better, she says, because waxing eventually causes wrinkles?). Mina was nice, and her work on my brows was quality and lasted a week before needing maintenance-plucking at home. Because of that, I may go back, though I'm gonna try to find somewhere a little cheaper, $24 for brows is a bit much for me. read more

This salon is by far one of the best salons I have ever been to. It truly is a hidden gem. Mina (the owner) is an eye-catching beauty who is incredibly warm and always makes you feel so welcomed. It's always hard for me to explain what I want done with my hair but Mina gets it right every time. She truly cares for her clients. Her salon is a cute boutique-ish salon with a very soothing atmosphere. I sometimes just go for a blowout so I can talk with Mina and unwind. The owner herself is an artist in real life so whether she does your makeup or does your eyebrows or hair, she literally transforms you from a blank canvas to the Mona Lisa! Definitely a must go. Not only is the location super convenient (and there is usually no problem with finding street parking which is a huge plus for downtown Bethesda), more importantly Mina is fantastic at hair and eyebrows. I hesitate to even write this review, as I really don't want the secret to get out.. but this place is an absolute gem of a salon! I based my decision to make an appointment here upon the very fact that it doesn't have any reviews on Yelp, because I wanted to find a small personal non-pretentious Bethesda salon that had reasonable prices and, most importantly, an experienced group of stylists. Prior to my first visit to Lavand, I had been going to the same stylist for six years. I never had to worry that he was going to botch my cut or that something else might go wrong. So, I was worried that I would not be happy with a new stylist. I walked out of Lavand after my first visit knowing that I would become a regular client. Mina, my stylist, was extremely professional and profoundly artistic. She spent a great deal of time shaping my hair, thinning and texturing it. She knew by intuition exactly how long I like my hair to be, and she meticulously worked around my cowlicks and other quirks that characterize my very complicated head of hair. The result was a perfect cut and style. The salon is small, clean, relaxing and friendly... very uncharacteristic of larger Bethesda salons. It is located on a small side street away from the mayhem of Bethesda Row and environs. Their prices for a men's cut are very reasonable compared to other Bethesda salons. Great salon! I, too, would not have known that this place existed (despite the fact that I live in the neighborhood) had it not been for a Groupon I bought. I love that they have online scheduling--quick and easy. I was the only customer there, but it's a small place, and Mina runs the salon very efficiently on her own. She introduced herself and immediately got to work. She's not very chatty (other than talking about your hair) which I like since I'm an introvert. I can't think of anything I hate more than inane small talk, and you won't get that here, thankfully. She did a great job on my hair and treated me respectfully the whole time, even though she knew I had a Groupon. You won't get that same treatment from a lot of other salons once they know you're redeeming a Groupon, sadly enough. Yesterday Friday the 13th I had an appointment for the first time going to salon Lavand to get color, high light and a haircut but I was a little worried how the work on my hair going to be since it was my first time in that salon. Mina did my hair beautifully and I left the salon so happily. The same night I had a girls night out with bunch of my girlfriends and I got a lots of compliments. I started going to Mina about 6 or so years ago -- right when she opened her salon. Even though I've sincemoved down to Alexandria, I refuse to go anywhere else for my hair! Mina is so talented, so nice, and I always feel relaxed when I'm there. She is very precise with her hair cuts and always checks her work carefully. Her other major talent is eyebrow shaping. She is the eyebrow master! She always makes my brows look so great. She makes sure you like your haircut when you're done and if there's anything you want changed, she'll take care of it. I've never had trouble parking. There's metered street parking, or you can go and park in the Bethesda garage around the corner (that's free on weekends). Her pricing is great. Mina spent a number of years working at the nearby Elizabeth Arden RedDoor before she decided to open her place. Knowing that, it makes my $60 haircut even more of a bargain. Eyebrows are a little on the pricey side at $20, but she is so talented, it's totally worth the money. Highly recommend this little gem. read more

Mina is the only stylist I have ever worked with who truly listens. I am very particular, not the easiest to work with, and Mina has always been patient, kind and done whatever she can to make me happy. It is a pleasure to sit in her chair and I always get compliments on my hair after a visit. I feel lucky to have found her. Horrible, unprofessional salon! I got there seven minutes late for my appointment, told them I was in a rush, and the woman took a walk-in after she told me to go sit by the sink and wait for the walk-in to get her hair done. Totally rude and obnoxious. Of course, I wasn't going to wait around for an additional 45 minutes after already waiting for an hour. I immediately left and told the hairdresser I was going to get my hair done elsewhere. She yelled at me out the door telling me I was late to my appointment...right, but is this an excuse to take a walk-in while I had an appointment? NOPE! Not a good experience for me. Got there late because I got lost and was informed by Mina that she would color/trim my hair but would not blow dry or style it. I was not offered an option for rescheduling and since I had a trubate coupon, it was take it or leave it situation. So I left the salon but my hair in a crunchie and half wet. I have been going to Mina at Salon Lavand on and off for a few years. Every time I try someplace else, I think, I should have gone to Mina. She really knows how to cut hair and listens to what you want. She's a one-woman shop and owns her business (I think another person works there occasionally.) I give her a lot of credit for that -- she does it all - the business, the hair cutting, washing and coloring. I like the shop-it's small, not noisy with loud music playing (yeah) and has lot of magazines to read! What more can you want? read more

I got a trubates deal to this place. I was very nervous going to a new salon but everything turned out great. She first sat me down and asked me what I would do today, and I said a haircut and full highlights. She seems to know her stuff and gave me some suggestions when I mentioned I don't want too brassy highlights. I am not a super chit-chat person and I actually prefer not having to make small talks when I get my haircut. Mina was a perfect fit for me since she didn't start small talks with me. I won't say she was awkwardly quiet, though, because she seemed friendly when I pointed out the multiple Marilyn Monroe posters. I was most impressed when she was giving me a haircut. Not only was she very experienced and she cut it exactly what I wanted. I also appreciate a stylist's honest opinion when I asked for it. I asked her if I should do some angling around my face, she said even though I already have bangs, she said a little bit would be enough. Overall, I am very happy with the experience. She was very patient (i was there for almost 2 hours) and my haircut turned out great. I would make this my to-go place except it is a bit pricey. Maybe if I need a makeover or something. read more
