First, I came to this salon several years ago and I had a great experience. This time I saw another hairdresser and the whole experience fell apart. First, my master spent half an hour consulting three other masters on the color. The color ended up, while nice, not at all as requested. "I can deal with that", I thought. "I'm just experimenting". Then the cut: I wanted a bob, all same length, but for some reason it ended up shorter in front and longer in the back. I didn't realize it then because of the way the hair was styled, but it is an inch longer in the back and looks unkempt. Finally, when I inquired about the price ahead of time, I was told "$165 for cut and color". When it was time to pay, I was asked for $235. I showed the email with the price, but was told (in a condescending tone) it is for touch-up, and we did full color. Since when does "cut and color" mean "touch-up"? After I showed the email, my price was lowered to $200 and I was supposed to feel grateful. Not a good experience this time, but because of my first experience I gave it an extra star. read more

I visited here between shut downs for two services. I had my hair done by Helene, highlights on generally light hair. She was speedy (which is appreciated when you have A LOT of hair that tends to get chemically damaged during a full head of highlights). My color was great, including toner. I've found my place! Didn't even realize how many services they have here. Today I went for a facial. Sylvia is Hungarian ( just like my facialist in LA) and she has an amazing touch. You feel nurtured and nourished, and I didn't have an allergic reaction to her wonderful-smelling creams. After steaming my pores open, she massaged my face, deep cleansed it, and rubbed in those wonderful creams. She also waxed my eyebrows. Sylvia is very experienced and has a delightful personality. Supercuts with aveda prices. Rude stylists with not so whispered comments and eye rolls. Mine arrived late. One was even "cleaning" a brush raking it and the debris right in my direction. I was apparently upcharged for having thick hair, it's pretty average and not especially long. An extra charge was thrown in with no explanation. The salon itself is basic, no ambiance. read more

Salon Helene It's located in walking distance For me. I wasIn contact with a hairdresser named Susan. And the last name I won't even try.(laughing) -Susan PANCZYSZYN. - I have to say that she is the most rigid inflexible rude practitioner that I have come across. I had issues with her appointments probably because when I call to set up an appointment somewhere they say when would you like to come in? And then we'll discuss possibilities with Susan she tells me this is what I have you come in 11 o'clock on Thursday. Then at 10:30 she text me and says I'm running behind you'll come in at 11:30. When I told her that I couldn't come at 11:30 I had other appointments she told me that I canceled the appointment and she doesn't like cancellations and she can't service me I felt terrible I had been asking her if we could try a FaceTime consult for the 10 minute appointment I needed for her to look at my hair and see what kind of extensions would need to be put in. I know quite a lot about extensions and I told her I knew what I needed and a FaceTime consultation would save me about $80 on Uber since I can't drive presently she refused to even discuss it and when she canceled the appointment I called the receptionist in tears. We will have to remember that behind cold texting and emailing you are human beings with real human feelings mine were terribly hurt. Susan communication text and sounds like a robot ,!not machine mad at me there. I'd probably dodged a bullet. Someone that rigid and inflexible I suspect you know how much creativity I would never go to her to get my hair done she was incredibly rude. I am writing this review just after getting my brows and lip waxed because of the exceptional service I had! I am new to the area just moving from Indiana and just happened to be exploring around my condo area and saw that Tuesday they had a $15 special ($30 normally) for wax of lip and brows. You are taken to a massage room that has peaceful zen music playing. Ofelia was so warm and sweet and made me feel so welcomed in the area! She really cleaned me up and even waxed off my nose since I had some black heads. I love that sun screen was put on me right away. I felt so happy to find a salon that does everything(haircuts, nails, waxing, lash extensions). There is a $95 lash extension promo going on right now too! I am so happy such a salon is just within walking distance for me! Will def. be going back for my other beauty needs! read more

"Hair By Mary" by Stylist Mary Brodie (760) 846-6600. She presently has a station at Salon Helene, located at 6949 El Camino Real in Carlsbad. Worst haircut experience EVER!!! I asked for a Shag style haircut frame around my face. I also asked if she had experience with this cut. She was very confident. I was surprised when she was done. I stated that I liked it to be framed around my face. I combed it myself and explained how I like it to fall. She stated that she used a-lot of styling product in my hair. I than noticed that she switched to her thinning shears. Usually not good results on my baby fine texture hair. I immediately asked again to comb it myself. My hair was just not laying/falling correctly at all. I even tried shaking it. I saw Mary getting frustrated and she said something like ..??.. She would have cut it differently but it's what I wanted. What?? She was very hesitant to do anything else. Now very nervous! I figured that after I wash the styling products out & blow dry it myself it would be ok. Wrong! I called and texted Mary leaving her many messages. I asked her to see if a stylist in her salon could fix my hair ASAP for I was leaving the following day for a family reunion & my son's graduation. I did not receive a return call or text from Mary. Very unprofessional. I requested a refund. With much difficulty finding a stylist on the spot I did find a wonderful stylists to recut my hair. She felt so sorry for me she didn't charge me for her services. After weeks and still no follow up from Mary I decided to write this review. Let just say. I've not had actual service yet. I like to be clear. My interaction with Susie (PANCZYSCYN) seriously (?) Was so insulting and upsetting that I called Angie the receptionist in tears. Which I could not do I had back to back appointments so she accused me of canceling the appointment the next appointment I excepted an 830 on Saturday morning with a question could she possibly find a later appointment or could we do FaceTime she never answered me an hour later I realized I had a memorial service for my mom the next day and I texted her and said I had completely forgotten that could we make it another time I can't work with you she texted back moving forward you should find someone else horrible. Her message : No shows and cancelations is the same for any body that books. I do not see anyone that no shows and I do not see anyone that cancels more than even 1 time is a non negotiable for my business Good luck. I dodged a bullet. I got a wash, cut, bangs, and style for 55 dollars total. I was a walk in a got in pretty immediately. The wash felt really nice and the products used made my hair very soft. The haircut was okay, the bangs didn't blend in with my hair as well as it could have on the sides, but it's nothing that won't grow out in a bit. However I was disappointed in the styling. The hairdresser asked if I wanted some curls and I said sure why not. She took a small, around 1in curling iron and proceeded to curl my hair. I was taken aback because 1in curlers are way to tight and they aren't really in style right now. The curls ended up being tight and not flowy as you would imagine most styles to be. Super super unsatisfied with how my full set came out. I asked for coffin shape, and they're rounded which I can blame to being misheard because of the loud music and would've been able to deal with. The color I chose was a nude purpleish with sparkles, and I walked out with a bronze brown color. I said something to the nail tech, and she said ooh it's more bronzey and didn't stop. Plus the color is patchy, missing spots. 50$ later (by the way how does a short set for $35 magically jump that high) I have a headache, bleeding cuticle, and ugly nails in my opinion. I couldn't wait to go home to write this review. I hate writing bad reviews, but I feel like I would be doing a disservice by not sharing my experience. I made an appointment for a haircut for my two girls. Upon making the appointment, I asked how much the cuts would be. The gal I spoke with asked for their age and I told her 9 and 10. I was told the haircut would be $25. The appointments were booked for the next day with Elizabeth. My youngest daughter went first. She just got a basic haircut, cutting off about 4 inches. When she was done she told me, Elizabeth was rough when she was shampooing her hair. For my eldest daughter, I asked for about 3.5 inches to be cut, with long layers, and long bangs. When she was done, I could not believe how horrible the ends looked. I wish I would have taken a picture. Elizabeth said it was textured at the ends and I wish Helene was there to see that it was far from looking textured!! I asked her to just cut straight across and she did. She got the bangs right, but I don't see any layers in the back When came time to pay, she told me $30 and $45. Of course I mentioned that I was told the cuts would be $25 when I made the appointments. And she rudely replied, who said $25, if she wants to cut your hair for $25 that's fine, but not me. I may not got that verbatim, but pretty close. Needless to say, I paid the $75 and walked out the door. Elizabeth..next time apologizing to the paying customer for being misinformed is the better approach rather than rudely telling the customer that whoever quoted me $25 should have been the one to give the cuts. read more

Thought i would try a new place as i live right across the street. It was after work on Thursday. i was tired. Looking forward to having nice hair for the weekend. The woman who did it was nice but had no idea what she was doing. I love Morrocan Oil and they have it in the shop window but she didnt use it for my shampoo or conditioner. Horrible shampoo and blowdry! It wasnt smooth. I was left with frizzy straight hair even though she used a flatiron. Had to go home and wash my hair right after. Basically paid for nothing. Seniors are NOT welcome! These people are rude, inconsiderate and unprofessional. I called in the am, asked for quote for a perm & cut for my 97 yr.old mother, $75, I made the appt. She came to live with us in Carlsbad from Napa after the terrible fire there. She takes great pride in how her hair looks. With the pandemic, we were not able to help her get hair appts until now. The "Caregiver" took her to the appt. and then was told a permanent is $100 and hair cut is $55, way over her budget!! When I called I was told a "perm" meant "color". At making the appt, I definitely said "No color, just a permanent and a cut". At the appt when I was notified of the increased price I told them to just do the Permanent and that's it!! It just got worse - they got her top all wet, when she complained they took it off, no salon cape for modesty, protection or cleanliness, (because of breast cancer, she does not wear a bra) sooo humiliating, and put the top in a dryer! Some of the workers were snickering and complaining of "the lady"? Her appt was at 2pm, the checked out at 4:48!! Almost 3 hours !! read more

This review pertains exclusively to Kim Nguyen, one of the salon's nail estheticians (is that what we're calling them these days?). A caveat: it's hard for me to be objective here because I've been going to Kim since I was 11 years old. Not kidding. Meaning I'm neatly closing in on a 20 year old relationship with this woman. Even though I left San Diego when I was 14, my dad still lives there, so I consistently go back there...and always make time to fit in a visit to Kim. Just as importantly, she makes time to fit ME in, regardless of how short the notice is or when I want to come in. She often will stay late (8pm or later) by herself in the salon to accommodate my schedule. Whether it's been a month or a year since I was in last, Kim always remembers me and always takes care of me. The services themselves (manicure/pedicure) are consistently good. I, of course, have had many other pedicures in my life by people other than Kim. She is one of the VERY few who dares to really get in there and clean shit out. Which, let's face it, can't be pleasant for her but makes ALL the difference in both esthetics and comfort. She takes her time and is, quite frankly, a riot to chat to. Her Vietnamese accent is quite thick, belying the, oh, THIRTY years that she's been in this country. But she's a doll--funny, spirited and seemingly always in a good mood. When I was in college, I promised Kim that when I get married I would fly her in (to whatever the venue might be) to do my nails. As expected, she asks me about my "love life" every time I go in...and I have to tell her, "no, no wedding yet", but it's a promise I intend to keep! read more
