I had a weirdly bad blow out at 6 Salon a few weeks ago. I was Maid of Honor for my best friend's…read morewedding and picked this salon because it had great reviews, looked nice, and was walking distance from our hotel. Everyone here was really nice. And in fact my "stylist" was really kind and friendly. But in hindsight I think she knew as little about styling hair as I do. She air dried my curly hair twisting tiny chunks of my hair around her pinky finger one section at a time. I'd never had that done before, but I know nothing so I'm not surprised by anything people do to hair. This took a long time. Then at the end my hair was still quite damp so I asked if she could dry it all the way. She couldn't attach the diffuser to the hair dryer, so it kept falling off, so she tried 3 different diffusers but they all kept falling off. So then she just held it in place with her other hand. Then when my hair was mostly dry she put a bunch of products in it. All along I had been worried that I wasn't going to be able to get my hair to look great enough (I have curly hair that's pretty about 80% of the time but unpredictable and does what it wants). I had practiced blow drying my hair myself and I should have just done that. I left the salon feeling like at least I tried my hardest and went somewhere to try, but unsure if my hair was any better. The answer was no, I walked into the bridal suite and my best friend instantly said "you wasted your time and money. That's the same as your normal hair." Her hair and makeup people couldn't believe I had gone to a salon. Luckily her hair stylist had brought a curling iron with her and had a few minutes and she fixed my hair. But she did apologize because she said my hair was still damp so the curling iron was going to damage it. I would have been better off not going to 6 Salon for a blowout. If I had just combed and air dried my hair it would have been better off. But other people's hair looked fine. So I'm not sure which stylists are are good and which need training.

An assistant, Fatma, did my all over color and blow dry, but I will say that even though she was, in my opinion, not qualified as a colorist or hairdresser, she did a great job. HOWEVER, the haircut itself was sub-standard. This is the only part that Martin handled and he botched my haircut. He never once used scissors to shape my hair (I wanted a medium-length bob cut), but instead used a trimmer for the entire haircut. Now, I have been to a few excellent salons before and never once had I had a bob haircut done with trimmers. Obviously, I became alarmed and asked questions, but he pretty much claimed that he had 30 years of experience and knew what he was doing. I should have trusted my instinct and left right away. When he was done, the bottom of my hair was UNEVEN and the haircut was mediocre. I did tell him that I was not happy with the scraggly ends, but he was very dismissive and chopped off just one area that was particularly bad. I really thought that I was going to a middle-range to high-end salon. Sadly, this was not the case. I now know that Martin lacks the basic skills to cut hair straight, let alone give a proper haircut. Let me add that the whole time I was there, there was no ventilation even though it was close to 30 deg. C outside. At a minimum, the fan should have been on if the A/C was deemed too expensive to turn on. Imagine how hot it was with the hairdryers running. Even the staff members were inconvenienced by the heat, but apparently could not bring up the subject. Save yourself the trouble and go elsewhere. You can and will get much better service at a different salon.

True Story: I had to use a passport and go through customs to get a haircut here…read more People (including the people at the border) thought I was crazy. I don't care - It was TOTALLY worth it and I plan to continue the insanity every time I need my locks trimmed! If you have curly hair you know the lengths a curly girl will go to for a good haircut. I have received one too many bad haircuts in my life to take any more risk with my curls. Luckily, even though I have to go to a different country to get a cut, Jennessa is not too far from me. Jennessa has the cutest curly-centric boutique on the face of the earth. One shampoo bowl, one cutting chair, one drying chair and walls filled with curly hair product. Basically my dream place. I have been addicted to devacurl products (the line Jennessa uses) as well as the whole curly girl method for about 7 years now. I have had cuts in Chicago, NYC and Michigan. My experience with Jennessa was BY FAR the best. Jennessa has taken it upon herself to become the curly hair guru of Canada. I feel lucky to have had the opportunity to sit in her chair. I learned so much from her and she was wonderful to speak to. You truly can feel how passionate she is about curly hair and helping everyone discover their inner curly girl! A haircut with Jennessa is not just a cut - its a lesson, an experience. I learned so many new things during my appointment. I feel like a brand new curly girl! Jennessa cuts curly hair like it should be cut - dry and curl by curl. She is also trained, certified and an educator for http://www.devacurl.com/. After my cut I am not only sporting a super cute refreshed look but I feel like my curls got a whole new life (after some product suggestions that she gave me). If you have curly hair I understand not wanting to be crazy like me and going across the border all the time for cuts - but do it at least once. Learn about your curls. Get a lesson from the master. You will be so happy that you did! (she does book up very quickly so plan in advance!)

I can honestly say for the first time in my life, I actually feel like my hair is pretty. The salon: Super, super classy. The atmosphere was peaceful and welcoming. Also for those with sensitive respiratory systems, it did not really smell like most salons do. Aaaaand, they have me AMAZING coffee! :D The cut: I didn't really have a clear idea of what I wanted, and I did a terrible job of explaining, but she worked magic and was super happy to take suggestions and I NEVER felt like she was taking over. She and all the other stylists were super affirming and I have never gotten so many compliments on my hair in my entire life. Even with just the cut and set I learned tons about how to care for my hair eich was dry as a rock. Don't be scared of the price, if you already dislike your hair, what do you have to lose? And if you love your hair, I promise you won't regret it. They will only even make your curls better, no matter the state they are in.
