I don't know what quality to expect each time I come to Detroit, but we have to do better, ladies. I booked a color/retwist with Sala for 10am Memorial Day weekend but I definitely could've been late, considering she didn't start until almost 10:30, chatting with everybody there, including a walk-in talking about the service he wanted. After we FINALLY started and I reminded Sala what I booked (color/retwist), she immediately goes in criticizing my hair saying I "neglected them" after holding up one thinning loc, asking why they were misshapen (as if everyone can grow perfect cookie-cutter locs), reiterated "You definitely need a retwist" because they were a little frizzy...duh that's why I booked an appointment...lol Mind you, I barely had 3 weeks of new growth because I usually interloc them myself but I sat there and let her shade me. Even though she should've known ahead of time that I was scheduling color after a recent interloc (I listed it in the booking notes for the appointment and we had a text convo several days beforehand), she kept commenting to her assistant that it wouldn't be consistent results and that I should have waited and did the color first. Why wasn't any of that explained when confirming the appointment the day before? (She clearly doesn't read her booking notes, isn't the one responding when you text the shop, or forgets??) When I politely asked Sala to clarify if that meant the color would be visibly uneven, she had the nerve to play offended! "I know what I'm doing...if I didn't think it'd turn out right, I wouldn't keep the appt." ....OK! She actually joked about me questioning her supposed skills in front of everyone and then low and behold, my color was not right! First of all, she had the assistant start my color so she could go to the store WHILE I WAS THERE. If I booked with the apparent shop owner, that's who should be available or charge me the assistant price! She had to literally show and explain to her how to do color before she left, telling her "Cover all the dark spots, I hate dark spots"...Well, my roots are two shades brighter than the rest of the locs, and there are visible dark roots ALL across the front. After my wash was done, I sat in a towel for over an hour waiting for my retwist to start while she took another customer, claiming she would only need 15 min. So what should my response have been at that point? Refuse to pay and be ready to fight everyone? Yell, scream, cause a scene? Leave with undone hair in the middle of the service? I had an event right after that I was almost late for and had no choice but to finish. I don't understand what stylists expect when they treat customers poorly but I'm not confrontational and have a lot of social anxiety. For her to keep saying, "I have no idea what happened"..."The color looked like it was right before the wash"... "It's still cute", while everyone in the shop stared at the results, it was the most humiliating experience, especially to turn around and still charge me full price! Sala's only consolation was to return in 3 weeks after my retwist grew out, to correct the color LOL I wouldn't return here for a wash, let alone any color service since she apparently delegates the work to someone else, overbooks AND takes walk-ins so you're there all day or otherwise leave the shop altogether. Lucky for them, I had enough class to pay her and leave, but I'm the only person on Earth who would have dealt with so many red flags in one visit and STAYED. I hope that $200 I paid was a blessing to her.

The hair cutting chairs are seated so when the door opens a man walking by could see your hair. Yes there are darkened windows so no one can see inside unless the door is opened. I travelled out of town for a woman only hair cut I expected a closed off area or barrier or curtain blocking women's hair from sight to anyone who walks in. It just says salon so if a someone who doesn't wear hijab brings a male with her he would walk in and see your hair. Made me uncomfortable. Other then that my actual hair cut was mediocre and over priced. A trim and blow dry for 45 dollars (not even washed i came with my hair washed) Not a well done cut, and she didn't even ask if I wanted my hair straightened.

Salon Jovial is in Dearborn's Little Lebanon neighborhood. Street parking only, fairly unassuming store front. Doors and windows are barred and you have to be buzzed in, so don't fret if you reach for the door and it's locked. $30 before tip for a cut and shave, which is a good $10-15 less than you would expect to pay in a shop with this level of skill. Sign in and take a seat. Cash only, and no ATM within walking distance, so come prepared. Ray was my guy, but I had the privilege of spending my 10-15 minute wait watching Ray, Moe, and Ali all operate and you clearly can't go wrong with any of these gentlemen. Apparently, the line here gets crazy so I was fortunate to get in so quickly. My $30 got me a detailed initial consultation, a masterful cut, beard trim, wash, style, and some great advice on how to style the cut for the best look. Pretty insane value proposition if you ask me. My biggest regret is that these guys aren't around the corner from my house in North Carolina. That being said, I will not hesitate to return the next time I'm in town and need a barber. Whether you're in Dearborn or Metro Detroit, Salon Jovial is well worth the drive.

When you see the prices, it's easy to see why: $15 for an adult haircut,$10 for a child haircut, $25 for a haircut and a shave. Make no mistake about the "salon" part of the name: this is a straight up barber shop. I won't go so far as to at that ladies aren't welcome, but there were no females to be seen (either providing the haircuts or getting them) among the 20 or so people I saw when I was there. But, if you're a dude, and you don't mind waiting a bit for a very reasonably priced cut, this is the place for you. But there is more: I had just gotten a perfect haircut, and the barber proceeded to trim my eyebrows and hair on my ears (hey, I'm old, so shut up). I was getting ready to pay, when he said, "and now, he will take you to get your hair washed". And, that's exactly what happened. Somebody shampooed my hair and towel dried it. All this for $15!! One more thing: the front door is locked, and you will need to be buzzed in. I hadn't thought of this as a bad area, but then again, I am pretty fearless anywhere I go. I didn't see anything while I was here that would have caused any worries, so I assume it's just a case of the owner being overly cautious.
